    Materials with unlimited

possibilitiesTechnical textiles and composites arepenetrating an increasingly wide rangeof applications today because of theirinnovative potential. In these variousapplications, they are fulfilling manydifferent functions such as:

Filtration of liquids (e.g. fuels, oils) orgases (e.g. industrial flue gases) Insulation and protection from hightemperatures or mechanical forces

(e.g. cable sleeves, protective clothing) Reinforcement (e.g. elastomer hoses, structural components) and support

(e.g. seat upholstery) Transport (e.g. conveyor belts)

Higher requirements and strict envi-ronmental and safety regulations meanthat increasingly many of these func-tions can only be fulfilled with espe-cially developed engineering polymers.Plastics from Ticona are often used asthe base manufacturing material forfibers, filaments or films. Processed

into nonwovens, fabrics, prepregs andothers, they find application in prod-ucts such as high-performance filtersor composite components.

    Excellent properties

Ticona supplies a broad portfolio ofhigh-performance polymers for techni-cal textiles and composites. Theseespecially developed plastic gradeswith different viscosities can be easily

processed on conventional melt spin-ning machines and extruders because of

their very good melt stability and highpurity. In addition, excellent chemicalresistance, thermal stability, insulatingand mechanical properties help themmeet continually increasing require-ments in a wide variety of industries.

    Dual protection for the

environmentEngineering polymers also make itpossible to develop recycling-friendlysolutions for an entire element.Fortron PPS, for example, is used tomake high-performance filter media, but can also be employed in numerousother components, including sup-porting elements, end screw connec-tions and seals, which can be injectionmolded from the same plastic. Since

the complete filter system consists ofa single material, it is easy to recycle.

Elastomer hoses reinforced with high-tenacity Fortron PPS multi-filaments withstand the harsh environments under the hood.

    Strong polymers

for growing marketsMany industries today already relyon the performance of technicaltextiles and composites made fromhigh-performance plastics by Ticona. The following are just a few selectedexamples:

    Elastomer hoses outstanding

performance under the hoodIn the new generation of hydraulichoses for vehicle power steeringsystems and charge-air hoses for turbodiesel engines, high-tenacity multi-filaments made from Fortron PPShigh-performance plastic are used toreinforce the elastomer hoses. Thanksto the reinforced layer made from PPSmultifilaments, which combines highstrength with good elongation under

varying pressure loads, oscillations, vibrations and noise can be effectivelyreduced and driving comfort increased. In charged-air hoses, the FortronPPS reinforcing material provides therequired operating strength at highturbocharger pressures and tempera-tures up to 200 C, ensuring reliableand continuous engine performance.

Monofilaments made of Riteflex TPC-ET offer new possibili-ties for modern and light-weight seat design.

    Seat fabrics forincreased design

freedomIn designing seats whether for cars, aircraftor the office it isimportant to strike theright balance. Often, thepriority is to save weightand space while opti-mizing recyclability byreducing materials andusing the fewest possi-ble plastics. At the same

time, these requirementsmust not be fulfilled atthe expense of comfortor functionality. Seat-sup-porting textiles produced withelastic filaments made from RiteflexTPC-ET enable designers to replacethe usual metal springs, upholsteryand/or foams. These thermoplastic

polyester elastomer grades arecharacterized by high, rubber-likeresilience and fatigue resistance. Thanks to their good abrasion resist-ance, dyability and aging resistance,Riteflex TPC-ET filaments are

suitable not only as a supportinglayer within a multilayer seatstructure but also as an upholsterycovering material.

Fortron PPS monofilaments provide a longer life for conveyor beltsdue to very good hydrolysis and mechanical properties.

    Filter systems for environ-mental protection

Besides the automotive industry, other highly challenging applicationsectors in which technical textiles areused include the chemical and en-ergy industries. In these applications,

Ticona plastics have to withstand hightemperatures and aggressive chemicalssuch as solvents, flue gases, hydraulicoils and fuels.

In many gas and liquid filtration proc-esses, for example, nonwovens madefrom Fortron PPS are used becauseof their excellent chemical resistance athigh temperatures and product purity. In meltblown nonwovens with basisweights of 10 g/m2 to 400 g/m2 or gra-dient filters, PPS ensures a very long

filter service life despite extremelychallenging conditions.

In waste incineration plants and coal-fired power stations, the characteristicstrengths of polyphenylene sulfideare also exploited, including goodresistance to acid gases and hydrolyticresistance at operating temperatures ofup to 200 C. Filter bags made fromPPS staple fibers are therefore state-

of-the-art technology for separatingair pollutants and dust particles fromindustrial flue gases.

For filtration of fuels and oils in theautomotive industry, the thermoplasticpolyester Celanex PBT is used. Thismaterial offers the advantages of very

high flowability, a wide processingwindow and low shrinkage. For exam-ple, meltblown nonwovens with veryfine fiber structures (

Composites based on Fortron PPShave excellent inherent flame retar-dancy, low smoke density and a highoxygen index (Limited Oxygen Index/LOI > 50%). They are resistant tokerosene, hydraulic oils and deicers.Compared to aluminum, PPS compos-ites have excellent mechanical proper-

ties, withstand extreme temperaturevariations, and permit weight savingsof up to 50 percent.

Automotivemanufactur-ers today are alsomaking increasing useof composites in motorvehicles to cut weight andcosts. For instrument panels, front end modules, roof systems,

gearbox and pedal components,Celstran LFT is now oftenthe material of choice. This

    long-fiber-reinforced thermoplastichas better mechanical properties

    than short-glass-fiber-reinforcedmaterial and is therefore

a suitable replacementfor metals or pressure

    diecastings. The ad-ditional plus with

    Celstran LFT:

its high impactresistanceresults in anexcellent crashbehavior.

Ultra-high purity for medicaltechnologyThe US Food and Drug Administra-tion (FDA) and European regulatoryagencies specify very high require-ments for engineering plastics usedin medical applications. Biocompat-ible, especially tailored MT polymer

grades offered by Ticona meet therelevant approval criteria, are suitablefor different sterilization methods andcan therefore be used in the medicalsector, e.g. for filter applications.

Ticona MT grades comply with the demanding regulations of the medical technology market.

Composite components made ofFortron PPS help the aircraft industryto reduce weight.
