Motivations

All-Optical Networks– Provide tens of Tb/s up to thousands of km;

– Dense WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) Systems

– Optical TDM (Time-Division Multiplexing) Systems

Limited Bandwidth– Optical Amplifiers (EDFA): ~25nm (3THz)

Increase the channel density for increasing the transmission capacity– Higher number of channels: >10

– Decrease the channel separation: <50GHz, 100GHz (ITU)

– Increase the bit rate per channel: >10Gb/s, 40Gb/s (ITU)

Motivations

Drawbacks– Optical Filtering

– Laser requirements: line-width, phase noise etc

– Existence of fiber nonlinear effects impairs the performance transmission

. Intra-Channel distortion: Self-phase modulation

. Inter-Channel crosstalk: cross-phase modulation and four-wave mixing

Solution– Optimize input transmitter parameters
