    When selecting a heat exchanger, certain principles arefrequently used. The descriptions below are given toexplain some of these principles. Exergys engineers will

    perform these and other calculations to recommend theoptimal heat exchanger to meet your needs.

    Heat Exchanger:

    A heat exchanger is a device used to transfer thermalenergy from a warmer fluid into a cooler fluid, withoutallowing the two fluids to mix or come in contact witheach other.

    Exergy offers the following two types of heat exchangers:

    The shell & tube heat exchanger consists of a numberof small diameter tubes (the bundle) enclosed insidea larger tube (the shell). One fluid flows through the

    small tubes, the other flows around the outside of them.Connections are provided at each end to connect thefluid inlets and outlets.

    The tubeintube heat exchanger consists of two tubes,an inner and an outer coiled together. As with the shell &tube, one fluid flows through the inner tube, the otherflows around the outside of it.

    Heat Transfer Rate:

    The heat transfer rate (Q) of any heat exchanger isa measure of how quickly thermal energy is beingtransferred from the warmer fluid to the cooler fluid.It is expressed in units of BTU/hr or Watts.

    Transfer Area:

    The transfer area (A) is the total area of the wallseparating the two fluids, through which the thermalenergy is transferred. For Exergy heat exchangers, itis the outside surface area of the tubes inside the shell.

    Overall Heat TransferCoefficient:

    The overall heat transfer coefficient (U) is a measureof the heat exchangers ability to transfer heat betweenfluids. It is determined by the physical propertiesproperties of the fluids used, and the geometry of

    the heat exchanger. Due to their small size, the heattransfer coefficient for Exergy heat exchangers is usuallygreater than the values published for shell and tube heatexchangers. This means that often the desired amount ofheat transfer can be accomplished with a smaller transferarea. This coefficient is used to calculate the heat transferrate as follows:

    Q = U A T

    Pressure Drop:

    An efficient heat exchanger allows both fluids to come inclose proximity to each other, without mixing. This is often

    accomplished with numerous small fluid passages,or a long tortuous fluid path. While beneficial forheat transfer, these configurations often create

    significant resistance to flow. The pressure dropis a measure of this resistance, and is calculatedas follows:

    P = Pin Pout

    The pressure drop is used either to determine thefluid flow rate through the heat exchanger, or thesize of the pump used to pump the fluid.

    Effectiveness:

    For two given fluid streams, there is a maximumamount of heat that can be transferred. Forexample, it is impossible for the hot fluid to be

    cooled to a temperature colder than the inlettemperature of the cold fluid. This is shown inthe diagram below.

    The effectiveness ( ) of a heat exchanger is theratio of the actual heat transferred to this maximumpossible amount, and is calculated as follows:
