District Park in Belle Rive to Open in 2009

The new district park at 82 Street and 167 Avenue will open in 2009. By then the city says the grass will be well-established. The trees are coming along nicely and there are a number of soccer and baseball fields

in the park. Lake District K-9 School is a new school planned for the site and the last we heard it is to open in 2010.

Transit Out, No Frills In?This is unconfirmed, but it looks like the City may

be looking at a new site for the Transit Centre that was proposed for 157 Ave and 97 Street. Loblaws told us on June 3 that it intends to propose a small format grocery store, possibly called No Frills (about 33,000 sq. feet) for the site along with other small commercial developments. Loblaws told us they are considering voluntarily accepting a limit on the maxi-mum size of the largest tenent of 80,000 sq. feet, the same condition the community agreed to on the site north of 157 Avenue.

Soccer Parents- Time to Step Up This outdoor season we tried something a bit dif-

ferent by dividing up the volunteer jobs needed to run our soccer program. Everything seems to working fairly well.

We must all remember that the Evansdale Soccer Program is “our” program run by the parents of “our” kids; in other words “US”.

We all owe a very sincere thank you to Graham Samycia for being our soccer director for two years now. He is doing a truly fantastic job. It just so happens that Corey Mahood, Graham’s wife is also our Membership Director. You saw Corey directing traffic at the soccer photos recently. Good for them, sad for us, Graham and Corey have moved across 97 Street into Castledowns.

So NOW IS THE TIME for some soccer parents to

step forward to help out. We need a new soccer direc-tor, an indoor soccer manager, a membership director and for the Summer Celebration 2009 we need a kids karnival coordinator and a concession coordinator. This year we had two non-soccer parents looking after key parts of the Summer Celebration. This would be fine except they are already deeply involved volun-teering in our communities (Belle Rive, Eaux Claires, Evansdale). We risk losing the people doing most of the jobs if other parents don’t step up and take over some of these little jobs. Parents MUST step up to the plate to fill these roles. And it must happen now, while we are healthy and in good shape. Our three communities have a great family atmosphere, step forward so our children can continue to benefit from community based programs.

In 10 years of involvement I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the community and meeting

Are You a Complainer or a Doer? Complainers sit on the sidelines and complain about the program run by the parents. Doers step forward and help make soccer great in Evansdale. We NEED HELP now to fill a few key positons BEFORE WE GET desperate - volunteer now while it’s still FUN!

The North ED 3-on-3 basketball tournament is a one day event set for July 19th, 2008. There are a variety of divisions for males and females grade 4 and up. This is a not-for-profit event where every dollar that comes in goes back to the participants to make it a memorable day. The North ED is a one day event envisioned to bring community together through basketball.

Last year the tournament was held on August 18th, 2007 at North Edmonton Christian Fellowship (NECF). More than 100 participants, volunteers and onlookers took in the tournament. Generous spon-sorship from Namao Center Optical, Namao Center Canadian Tire, Namao Center Sobey’s, Chris Page and Associates Ltd., Don & Anne Graham, Beauty

Junkie, Kevin Blosser, Curt and Jessie Jespersen, Syn-ergy Realty and Signature Interiors made the North ED a huge success.

The 2nd Annual North Ed 3-on-3 Basketball Tour-nament will be held at NECF on 9004-153 Ave, July 19th, 2008. The entry fee is $60 per team for youth and $80 per team for adults. The tournament is facili-tated by Darren & Rebecca Graham and a team of volunteers. Over $1,000 of prizes will be divvied up by the division winners, a free bar-b-q is provided for all participants, along with great music and an indoor player’s lounge.

The North ED requires community support to make it viable. Here are some opportunities for you or your business to get involved:

• Team sponsorship for players that need their entry fee subsidized

• Tournament sponsorship for materials, prizes and food

• Donations of materials, prizes and food• Volunteers to help with the event• Advertising for participants The North ED values all of the energy and

resources of contributors past, present and future. Financial donors can be provided with a charitable tax receipt.

If you would like to participate or support the 2nd Annual North ED 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament please contact Darren by phone at 232-3316, e-mail at [email protected], or website at http://www3.telus.net/public/g-family/north.html

A Big Thanks to our 2008 Volunteer Coaches

new parents involved with their children’s sports. However, in the past few years it has been a very small group of volunteers ensuring all kids have the benefit of organized community league sports/events. I fear that without additional parents becoming involved our programs will no longer be able to con-tinue. PLEASE do not let this happen. Remember: many hands make light work. Small efforts by YOU can reduce the work needed by all volunteers and ensure it stays fun.

Please call to volunteer today: call me at 478-6162

Evansdale Now on EFCL Board The community league presidents of Area 17 unan-

imously voted last January to reunite our ties with the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues to contribute our concerns and issues from north central Edmonton and to work to make community leagues stronger in Edmonton. To this end I have am now the District B representative, and I now sit on the EFCL Board of Directors. At the EFCL we helped get a Joint Use Committee set up to continue work on strengthening community use of and relationships to schools. We are also involved in the EFCL Task Force on Representation set up to find better ways for communities to be represented by the EFCL that rep-resents 150 leagues across Edmonton.

Have a great summer, see you at the Community Party on June 21!

Shawna Walsh: Area 17 Volunteer of the Year

Shawna Walsh was named the Area 17 Volunteer of the Year in recognition of her major contributions to a host of community activities she supports with her amazing volunteer efforts.

Shawna is known as a super volunteer in Evans-dale and beyond our borders too!

Area 17 President Gordon Harris presented the award to Shawna on behalf of all Area 17 com-munities at the annual Area 17 Volunteer Apprecia-tion Barbeque on May 3 in front of representatives of the seven communities that make up Area 17: Evansdale, Lago Lindo, Northmount, Londonderry, Steele Heights, Kilkenny, and McLeod and special guests including City Councillors Ron Hayter, Tony Caterina, and Ed Gibbons and provincial MLA Peter Sandhu.

Shawna is Evansdale’s Bingo Director and aside from coordinating volunteers she helps with many community events throughout the year.

Shawna is a previous YMCA Woman of Distinc-tion award winner and a fomer Evansdale Volunteer of the Year as well!

Nelson Dell Little Kickers Founding Director

Nelson Dell is one of those volunteers who takes on the job, goes away and organizes things so well you hardly hear a thing about it after that!

Our Little Kickers Soccer program was started by Nelson as a partnership between Evansdale and Kilkenny community leagues. The program includes kids from Londonderry and is still a model of coop-eration between the communities.

You can see Nelson standing around chatting at soccer registrations, because he is so organized it’s rumoured that his computer registers kids before they even walk in the door! Ok, it’s not that easy, but the communities are very lucky to have an excellent Little Kickers Soccer program, and in some measure that is thanks to Nelson Dell and all the other great volun-teers who help him out.

Cindy Wandio Eaux Claires Community Pioneer

Cindy Wandio was very surprised to learn she also won an Evansdale Area 17 Volunteer of the Year award this year.

Evansdale Volunteers the Best

Hello everyone. Hope you are all enjoying soccer, basketball, baseball or whatever sport your children have you involved in. Thank you to every-one for fulfilling your volunteer commitments. Lots of new changes at the bingo hall; new system being installed, new games starting... wow! Thanks to everyone who worked the crazy Wednesday evening we had representatives from Alberta Gaming Com-mission visit us—your patience was greatly appreci-ated. One of our volunteers had only been in Canada for one month—what a way to welcome him to our world of community league sports. He did an excel-lent job though, thanks Richard for showing him the ropes. All in all I believe our community league has the best group of volunteers. Our old-hat parents are always willing to help break-in the first-time parents

Evansdale Volunteers of the Year Cindy couldn’t attend the Area 17 BBQ this year so she was recognized at the May Evansdale Execu-tive Meeting.

Cindy contacted Evansdale over zoning issues in Eaux Claires a number of years ago. Through her efforts many people from her neighborhood became involved in helping plan a better neighborhood and Cindy put in many, many hours at meetings and public hearings. Thanks in part to Cindy many people became involved with our community league as soccer directors, membership directors and Eaux Claires is a stronger neighborhood in the commu-nity league as a result.

Cindy is the current secretary of Evansdale Com-munity League and we thank her for all of her efforts!

David Dodge

- our parents always work together as a great team. Thanks again everyone!!!

There are some people I have not been able to contact yet for your volunteer commitment. I have left messages with everyone stating which event they would be working and I do apologize for not getting back to you as of yet. Things have been a bit crazy and I kinda put that stuff on the back burner. If you have not heard from me again you are probably slated in for the Year End Summer Celebration Event - June 21. I will be calling everyone again the May long weekend so if you have not heard from me please give me a call at 473-2169; sometimes names get lost when information is passed down the line. Again, I apologize for the delay in getting you all confirmed.

KUDOS TO ALL OUR GREAT PARENTS - you make working the bingos lots of fun. Have a great summer and I will see you at the Fall sport regis-tration. You will also meet Cindy Hoekstra at that registration - she is our latest addition to the Bingo Family. Welcome aboard Cindy!!
