Het zit er weer opDit is ‘m dan de laatste Eurotourist van1999. Natuurlijk zijn we er in 2000ook weer bij. Maar nu gaan we eerstde winterstop in om dan straks weerfris en hopelijk met een nog beter pro-dukt in april te verschijnen.Terugkijkend op het afgelopen seizoenkunnen we niet anders constaterendan dat het best wel goed is gegaan.Veel drukker dan het jaar ervoor enweinig echte problemen.

Natuurlijk wensen wij iedereen, en inhet bijzonder onze trouwe adverteer-ders, zonder welke het niet mogelijkzou zijn om deze magazines boorde-vol met belangrijke informatiebetreffende Salou en omgeving te ver-vaardigen, het allerbeste toe enhopen dat we iedereen weer gezonden wel in 2000 mogen terugzien.

USSBataan inSalouHet is alweer 2 jaar geleden dat deUSS JF Kennedy zich hier meldde enmet meer dan 6000 opvarenden vooreen aardige drukte zorgde in Salou enomgeving. Nu was het dus de beurtaan de USS Bataan. Met meer dan3000 opvarenden ook geen kleintje.En deze keer waren we er op tijd bij

dus dat betekende vanaf de eerstedag veel Amerikaanse mariniers inSalou. Snoepy’s was natuurlijk toren-hoog favoriet vooral bij de jongeopvarenden van de USS Bataan. Deofficieren hadden het vooral naar hunzin in Charlie Chaplins.

Nu de dagen weerkorter wordenworden de nachten weer langer. Datbetekent natuurlijk meer party time.Tot en met 30 oktober kan dat noguitstekend bij Discotheek Snoepy’s. Zijnvele collega discotheken al dichtgegaan, zoniet Snoepy’s. Traditioneelde discotheek bij uitstek voor deNederlanders in Salou. Op 30 oktobernodigt Hilario, dat is de sympathiekeeigenaar van Snoepy’s, iedereen uit opeen drankje van het huis, spreekt voorzich dat de entree ook gratis is dielaatste avond.

Voetbal in SalouIn deze uitgave van Eurotourist kun jealles vernemen betreffende het zaal-voetbaltoernooi dat tijdens de herfst-vakantie hier in Salou zal wordengehouden. Zoals jullie kunnen zien isNikki er ook klaar voor.

Er is er een jarig...Onlangs waren wij uitgenodigd op deverjaardag van Maria. Maria werd 30jaar. Dat was dus taart en champag-ne. Maria werkt in restaurant BeiClaus. Natuurlijk wensen wij Marianog vele jaartjes toe in gezondheid.

Zo, dit is’m dan, het GOUD is grotendeelsverdeeld en de KUST is nagenoeg leeg. Aanmij om de laatste GOUDKUST aan het papiertoe te vertrouwen.Ik doe dit met plezier en tegenzin. Met plezieromdat ik het enorm leuk vond om te doenen met tegenzin omdat het de laatste is. Hetis, zoals de meesten zullen hebben ervaren,een iets andere rubriek geworden dan hetjaar ervoor, hetgeen ik in april ook hadbeloofd. Ook de sceptici onder de lezers zul-len dit moeten toegeven. Wij, van de EURO-TOURIST, hebben tot nu toe alleen maar posi-tieve reacties op de artikelen en het geheleblad vernomen en dat geeft de burger weermoed en energie om nu al reeds aan vol-gend jaar te denken en te werken. Nieuwwas ook de Spaanstalige rubriek, hetgeen totgevolg had, dat ons blad ook onder deSpaans sprekenden werd verdeeld en er ookSpaanse ondernemers gingen adverteren,hetgeen voor iedereen goed is. Hoe het blad er volgend jaar gaat uitzienweten wij nog niet, maar er komt zeker weereen GOUDKUST, in welke vorm?? Git, Han,Chris, Elly en Sue, Willy en Natascha, Babette,Peter en Edwin, William, Maarten, Nino, Eric,Dinny, bedankt voor jullie welwillendheid entijd. Zonder jullie had ik deze Goudkustenniet op deze manier kunnen invullen.Git ( Koko’s) is met iets bezig wat ik niet magvertellen maar dat merkt men hier van dewinter wel.Han (Hippoos/Time Out) gaat de komendemaanden nadenken over zijn nieuwe zaak.Voor geinteresseerden, een van zijn huidigezaken wil hij wegdoen. Info 629012425.Chris (Werken in Spanje) gaat eerst vakantievieren na een vermoeiende zomer en wathet volgend jaar gaat brengen kon hij nogniet vertellen.Elly en Sue (Bei Claus) blijven met hun gezelli-ge zaak van de winter open. Voor de juistedagen en tijden kunt u het beste even bijhun binnenwippen.Willy en Natascha (Knabbel en Babbel) heb-ben het ook dit jaar behoorlijk druk gehad enweten nog niet wat de winter gaat brengen.Open of dicht, we zullen het ongetwijfeldsnel merken.Babette (Solmar) zal ongetwijfeld van eenwelverdiende vakantie gaan genieten en ver-der nadenken over een eventuele mogenlijk-heid voor een kinderopvang.William (Bruintje Beer) Voor hem was het heteerste jaar met een zaak in Salou. Hij gaat

van de winter naar zijn gezin in Holland enplanningen maken voor het volgend jaar.Maarten (Snoeyink enz.) en Peter (MooiSikke/Peter Langhout) gaan een beetjeafkoelen en in Andorra werken.Peters partner Edwin denkt erover om rich-ting Oostenrijk te vertrekken voor een paarmaanden, maar het kan ook dat hij eengeheel andere richting uitgaat. Wij zien welwaar het kerstkaartje vandaan komt.Nino (Yogiburger /Saloon) zal de wintergebruiken om zijn gezin wat meer aan-dacht te geven nu daar tijd voor is. Zeker isdat hij een ,al een tijdje geleden naar zijnvrouw gedane, belofte gaat verwezenlijken.Thuis de keuken verbouwen.Dinny (Heineken Hoek en meer) gaat onge-twijfeld een verre reis maken, maar kan nietstilzitten, dus......???? Jongelui, want dat zijn jullie voor mij alle-maal, ik denk dat veel mensen van jullieondervindingen best wel iets hebben kun-nen opsteken. Al is het alleen maar dat menbegrijpt dat het gewoon keihard werken istijdens het seizoen en dat een deel van dewinter wordt gebruikt om het volgende jaarte plannen en/of voor te bereiden. Ik hoopjullie volgend jaar allemaal weer in goedegezondheid tegen te komen, in welke zaakof hoedanigheid dan ook.Voor mij was het een hele ervaring om ,met Frank en Nikki aan dit blad te werken.Wij kenden elkaar en toch niet en voor mijwas het de eerste maal dat ik mij in de jour-nalistieke wereld stortte, maar ja, je bentnooit “te oud” om te leren. Een blad makenis niet:advertenties verkopen, stukjes schrijven, ofeen beetje computeren en daarna lekker dehele zomer op een terrasje zitten. Nee, daarkomt iets meer bij kijken. Elke keer weer eenverrassing wat er nu weer zou gebeuren.Trouwens over verrassingen gesproken. Watvindt u ervan als u op een donderdag eenBMW 318I, rood van kleur en voorzien vanhet kenteken, T-5713-AB koopt en deze binnen 2x 24 uurweer wordt gejat? Juist, zo reageerde ikook. Het is nml. mijn auto, dus als u hemergens mocht zien of weten waar hij uti-hangt, hoor ik dat graag van u. Zoals u nubegrijpt waren mijn ritjes op de fiets eenbeetje noodgedwongen en niet omdat ikopeens zo sportief was. Hoe dan ook, ikheb het weer over onze EUROTOURIST, 2xper maand kwam ie uit, zoals beloofd. Wat

mij betreft is het enorm goed bevallen engaan wij gezamenlijk de nieuwe eeuw in.Geen vakantie dus naar Eindhoven ofBenidorm, maar gewoon niet uit Salou wegte branden. Goed, iedereen gaat denk ik een beetje zijnof haar zomer evalueren om er volgend jaarweer tegenaan te gaan, of niet. Ik in ieder geval wel. Buiten mijn redactione-le werk om is een aantal geplande dingenvoor mij niet doorgegaan, dus dan pak jeiets anders aan., met het risico of dat wel ofniet lukt. Als je het niet probeert, zul je nooitweten of het gelukt zou zijn, of niet.Enkele bedrijven gingen vroegtijdig, vrijwilligof noodgedwongen dicht, om welke redendan ook. Dit jaar was er in de horeca inSpanje een gigantisch personeelsgebrek.Velen verkeken zich op de werkdruk entrokken het niet een heel seizoen. Daarbijkomt dat er in de bouw ook een personeel-stekort was en velen hebben het dienblad ofkeukenmes geruild voor een hamer of trof-fel. Ook moesten er enkele zaken midden inhet seizoen dicht vanwege een enormebrand in de C/lle Andora. CHAPEAU voor deondernemers die binnen ongelooflijk kortetijd hun bedrijf weer open hadden. Ook zijner enkele zaken van eigenaar veranderd endat zal ook volgend jaar weer het geval zijn.Ondernemers die er, om welke reden danook, de brui aan gaven of iets anders, ofgroter wilden. Mocht u willen weten wat erzoal in de verkoop/verhuur is of komt,of wiltu niet dezelfde personeelsproblemen heb-ben als dit jaar, kijk dan even bij de paginamet zoekertjes, of bel gerust 629012425 enmisschien kunnen wij u helpen. Het is zoweer Pasen en waarom wachten? The earlybird catches te worm, zoals de Fransen zeg-gen. Trouwens wat ik begrepen heb, blijvenof gaan er behoorlijk wat zaken de gehelewinter open. Er is nog een groot zaalvoet-baltoernooi, een internationaal schaaktoer-nooi en steeds meer mensen willen de stadniet verlaten, om eens gezellig uit te gaan.Ook enkele Spaanse zaken zijn voornemenshun deuren in de winter enkele dagen perweek open te houden. Niet verkeerd dusom ook na het seizoen open te zijn, zij hetdan met iets andere openingstijden. Mochtu van de winter iets van plan zijn, sla eventegen de klepel en wij hangen het graagvoor u aan de grote klok.Onze planning isom gewoon door te gaan, zij het in ietsandere vorm. Wij zijn zowiezo hier om voorbereidingen tetreffen voor het seizoen 2000. Op het laatstemoment alles regelen heeft geen zin. Ik ein-dig met een opmerking die ik ook in de eer-ste Goudkust en wel vaker gebruik, nml. datik u allen het dubbele toewens van hetgeenu mij en de mijnen toewenst. Het ga ugoed, voor wat betreft GOUDKUST tot vol-gend jaar maar tot die tijd ben ik gewoon inSalou of telefonisch bereikbaar voor ideeenof vragen.

Het kan jullie, lezers van deEurotourist, niet ontgaan zijn dat dezelange, hete zomer in Salou nog eenvervolg krijgt. De traditie is dat dezomer ’99 niet in Salou eindigt maarin Amsterdam, de hoofdstad van devrijheid en het mekka van het nachtle-ven.Ieder jaar weer zijn er een aantalgelukzoekers die ook één of anderefeestje in Nederland proberen te orga-niseren maar er is er maar één die dekwalificatie Mega verdient en dat isnatuurlijk de:

Salou Mega Party

De eerste vrijdag van november wordtalweer voor de vijfde keer de SalouMega Party georganiseerd. Niet alleende toeristen die een toptijd hebbengehad in Salou maar ook alle werkerskijken uit naar deze happening. Naeen lange zomer hard werken kunnenook zij de remmen los gooien.

De historie"Het feest is eigenlijk een uit de handgelopen grap" wordt ons verteld. Naeen zomer vol feest en plezier gaatiedereen uiteindelijk weer terug naarNederland. Eenmaal terug, komt ersnel weemoed naar die heerlijkezomer in Salou.Op een regenachtige dag in novem-ber gingen een aantal Salougangerselkaar bellen om weer het zomerge-voel en de verhalen op te halen.Uiteindelijk werd besloten om ergensin een kroeg in Amsterdam af te spre-ken. Zo gezegd, zogedaan. Die beldedie, die belde die en die belde weer

die. In plaats van de geplande veertig, vijftig man zaten erineens 300 Salougangers in de Coco’s in Amsterdam.Het idee was toen geboren. Het jaar daarna, we schrijven1995, moest het gaan gebeuren. Er zou ergens een feestkomen maar waar en wanneer wist nog niemand. Eerst washet de RoXY, toen weer de Escape maar uiteindelijk werd hetMarcanti Plaza in Amsterdam."Toen de promotie nog", Iedereen die wat met Salou temaken had ging als een gek helpen promoten door op rozecopietjes zoveel mogelijk adressen te verzamelen. "Allemaallekker primitief en hobbyistisch", maar ja, who cares. Voor demuziek zorgden twee dj’s die met de allerlaatste bus uit Saloumee naar Nederland kwamen. Al met al waren er die eersteavond toch zo’n 1200 mensen bijeen.

Promotie teamVan links naar rechts zie je John, Sabine, Frida, Analieke,Herbert, Ellen, Cees en Bregje het zijn de jongens en meisjesdie de afgelopen zomer in het promotie team voor de enigeechte Salou reünie hebben gewerkt.

Wat is er allemaal te doen?"Salou, Salou, Salou, alles is Salou". De dj’s van Snoepy’s enFlash Back worden speciaal overgevlogen, er zijn verschillen-de acts, er is een groot videoscherm met de beste beeldenvan Salou 99 en natuurlijk zijn er Go-go dancers. Ook mageen kwartiertje Holland Party niet ontbreken. Als klap op devuurpijl komt Dj Erick-E draaien, van de oude RoXYAmsterdam. Degenen die even wat minder house willen,komen ook aan hun trekken, want in de andere zaal wordtzowel lekkere swingbeat als populaire top-40 muziekgedraaid.Om vijf uur is het over maar voor de echte feestgangers is denacht nog niet ten einde. Ergens in Amsterdam wordt er nogeen "after" georganiseerd. Helaas, zelfs wij van de Eurotouristzijn er niet achter gekomen waar dat zal zijn.

Al met al wordt het dus weer een geweldig feest. Zo’n 4000Salou-fanaten samen op een avond bij elkaar doen de zomernog eens dunnetjes over. Ook wij van de Eurotourist zullen erzeker bij zijn.

Natuurlijk hebben wij van de redactie eralles aan gedaan om zoveel mogelijkinfo over Salou aan boord van de USSBataan te brengen. Meer dan 1500Eurotourist Magazines hebben wij mettoestemming van de legerleiding onderde manschappen verspreid. Geen won-der dus dat Nikki op menig door dediverse Legeronderdelen georganiseerdeparties was uitgenodigd om voor hetnodige vertier te zorgen. Natuurlijk heb-ben wij ook van de gelegenheid gebruikgemaakt om een aantal fraaie plaatjesvan het schip te maken.

De USS Bataan maakt deel uit van een vloot diemomenteel in de middellandse zee opereert en meerdan 6 maanden van huis blijft. Met als thuisbasisNorfolk Virginia in de verenigde staten, zijn ze dus eenheel eind van huis en voorlopig ook nog niet terug.Met zijn meer dan drieduizend koppige bemanning eenware stad op zee. Tijdens hun 5-daags verblijf in deHaven van Tarragona hebben velen van hen Salou

weten te vinden. Nog voordat het schip was afgemeerdwaren al verschillende verkenningseenheden aan landgezet om de omgeving te verkennen. Lees: waar je hetbeste een feestje voor meer dan 3000 man kunt organi-seren. Dat werd dus Salou, en niet het veel grotereTarragona. Waarom? De taal, hoofdzakelijk de overwe-ging om naar Salou te komen. Daarnaast bezit Saloueen heel arsenaal aan supergezellige barretjes, discotheken en restaurants. Veel officieren hebben er eenkleine mini vakantie van gemaakt en de kleine verblij-ven aan boord verruild voor een luxe hotelkamer inSalou.

In de navolgende pagina’s kun je alleslezen over de USS Bataan en z’nbemanning. Zowel heden als verledenvan deze vooral in de Amerikaansegeschiedenis zwaar beladen naam zul-len je worden uitgelegd. Ook de tech-nische gegevens van het schip en dedata betreffende de leidinggevendeofficieren aan boord van de USSBataan zullen geen geheim blijven. Inde diverse gesprekken die we hebbengehad is Engels de voertaal geweesten dat betekend ook dat we de restvan deze reportage in de engelse taalzullen afdrukken dit om eventuele fou-ten die bij het terug vertalen naar hetNederlands zouden kunnen ontstaante voorkomen.

Just ten short hours after the attack onPearl Harbor on December 7th 1941,Japanese planes again surprised USforces with an attack on Clark Field,the main US air base on the Philippineisland of Luzon. Subsequent Japaneselandings on Luzon took place onDecember 10th and 12th, and on

December 22, after two weeks ofdiversionary tactics, a large Japaneseinvasion force landed at LingayenGulf. Japanese General MasaharuHomma, with a contingent of 80 shipsand 43,000 troops, waded ashorethrough both a typhoon and the resis-tance of US trained Philippinereservists. Homma landed tanks andartillery later that day and beganadvancing south toward Maniladespite the valiant resistance of MajorGeneral Jonathan Wainwright’sPhilippine Scouts.

On Christmas Eve, 1941, more ofHomma’s forces landed to the east atLamon Bay and began their advancetoward Manila, preparing to crush theAmerican-Philippine forces in a ‘pincer’maneuver. General DouglasMacArthur put into effect plan‘Orange 3’; the original plan fordefense of the island. The PhilippineScouts heroically opposed theJapanese advance while the mainforces complied with MacArthur’s orderto withdraw to the Bataan Peninsula.The retreating units were forced intoleaving behind the stockpiles of foodand medical supplies which were tosustain them. On December 26thManila is declared an open city byGeneral MacArthur and he orders alltroops and anti-aircraft guns to bewithdrawn in accordance with TheHague Convention of 1907.

On 30 December 1941, PresidentManuel Quezon is inaugurated onCorregidor for his second term ofoffice. Quezon pledges to ”stand byAmerica and fight with her until victo-ry is won.” The War Departmentreceives a radiogram from MacArthurdeclaring that the Japanese raids onManila are ”completely violative ofinternational law” and that ”at theproper time I bespeak due retaliatorymeasures.” The Japanese occupationforce move into Manila on 02 January1942, and Japanese planes begindaily attacks on Corregidor. TheJapanese assumed that overall victorywas assured, and a small Japanesereserve force was tasked with clearingthe Bataan Peninsula of remainingopposition forces. On January 10,these Japanese troops met up againstan Allied stronghold just north of

Abucay. Allied forces held off theJapanese advance at the Abucay lineuntil their foes took advantage of aweakness at Mt. Natib on January22nd. The American-Filipino fighterswere forced to retreat further into theBataan peninsula. The rugged terrainforced a slowdown in the Japanesepursuit , and the Allies were able toestablish another stronghold furthersouth on Mt. Samat.

On February 8, Homma received rein-forcements from Tokyo, and began toregroup for another assault. The con-tinued successful opposition of theAmerican-Filipino fighters to theJapanese takeover of Bataan providedthe much needed hope to the UShomeland that the battle in the Pacificwas not yet lost. In March 1942,General MacArthur received orders toescape to Australia and take over asSupreme Allied Commander in thePacific Theater. He reluctantly leftBataan on March 11th with theproclamation ”I shall return.” GeneralJonathan M. Wainwright, U.S. Army,immediately assumed command ofthe forces on the island of Corregidoroff the southern tip of the Bataanpeninsula.

Major General Edward King com-manded the remaining Allied forceson Bataan. While relatively wellarmed, these forces were living onone quarter the prescribed combatrations and had virtually no availablemedical supplies. Malnutrition and dis-ease were becoming rampant.Hunger and sickness eventuallyaccomplished what the Allies’Japanese enemies could not.

The odds against the American-Filipinotroops remaining on Bataan becameoverwhelming, and on April 9, 1942,with face in palm, Major General Kingsurrendered all forces on the peninsu-la. Thousands of prisoners were takenalmost immediately by the Japanese.With Allied fighters spread throughoutBataan, it would be days before theword of surrender could reach themall. Many refused to believe that thenews of US surrender was real, andsome retreated further into the moun-tains and continued to fight.

Hegraduated from Damage Controlman Class"A" School in 1970 and reported to theMayport-based destroyer USS William C.Lawe (DD 763). His next sea duty wasaboard the Charleston-based guided missiledestroyer USS Semmes (DDG 18) as RepairDivision LPO.In 1982 he reported aboard USS Conolly forhis first of two tours in the Norfolk-basedship. He served first as ship’s Repair DivisionLCPO, then as the Damage ControlAssistant. His next sea tour was in 1988when he reported aboard the Norfolk-basedamphibious assault ship USS Saipan (LHA 2)after graduating from the Senior EnlistedAcademy at Newport, R.I., Class 32. The starsare for the seven battle stars earned dur-ing the Korean Conflict, while the fivepoints of the central star are for WorldWar II Battle sttars. Captain Hackney was ExecutiveOfficer aboard USS MERRIMACK (AO179), Norfolk, Virginia, from 1991 to1992. Afterwards, she was assignedto the OPNAV Staff N81, as HeadSurface Analyst. From November1994 until November 1996, CaptainHackney was the CommandingOfficer of USS WILLAMETTE (AO 180)The highlight of this tour was deploy-ing to the Western Pacific and thePersian Gulf as a member of the USSNIMITZ (CVN 68) Battle Group. Hernext assignment was to SurfaceWarfare School, CommandDepartment, Newport, Rhode Islandto instruct Prospective CommandingOfficers and Executive Officers. female sailors. This ”Women at Sea”modification provides LHD-5 with liv-ing areas for nearly 450 female offi-cers, chiefs, enlisted personnel andembarked troops. Overall, the ship hasliving areas for nearly 3,200 crewmembers and troops.

In carrying out its primary mission,BATAAN will transport and land ashorenot only troops, but also the tanks,trucks and other vehicles, artillery,ammunition, and complete suppliesnecessary to fully support the assault.

The assault support system aboardship coordinates horizontal and verti-cal movement of troops, cargo andvehicles. Monorail trains, moving atspeeds up to 600-feet-per-minute,transport cargo and supplies from stor-age and staging areas throughout theship to a 13,600-square foot welldeck, which opens to the sea throughhuge gates in the ship’s stern. There,the cargo, as well as troops and vehi-cles, are loaded aboard landing craftfor transit to the beach. The LCAC aircushion landing craft can ”fly” out ofthe dry well deck, or the well deckcan be ballasted down for convention-al craft to float out on their way to thebeach.

Simultaneously, helicopters arebrought from the hangar deck to theflight deck by two deck-edge eleva-tors, and loaded with supplies fromthree massive cargo elevators.

LHD-5’s armament system includes theNATO Sea Sparrow Surface MissileSystem (NSSMS) for antiair warfare pro-tection, two Rolling Airframe Missile(RAM) Systems and two Phalanx Close-in Weapon System (CIWS) mounts tocounter threats from low flying aircraftand close-in small craft. Six missiledecoy launchers augment LHD-5’santiship missile defenses.

LHD-5 is 844 feet long, with a 106foot beam. Two steam propulsionplants, developing a combined70,000 horsepower, drive the 40,500-ton ship to speeds in excess of 20knots.

Fabrication work for BATAAN (LHD-5)began at the Ingalls Shipbuilding facili-ty on August 2, 1993, and the ship’skeel was laid on March 16, 1994.LHD-5 was launched on March 15,1996.

BATAAN was built utilizing efficient pre-

outfitting and modular constructiontechniques. Hundreds of smaller sub-assemblies, in which piping sections,ventilation ducting and other ship-board hardware, as well as majormachinery items, such as main propul-sion equipment, generators, and elec-trical panels were constructed. Thepreoutfitted subassemblies were thenjoined with others to form assemblieswhich were welded together to formfive completed hull and superstructuremodules.

These five giant ship modules, eachweighing thousands of tons, werejoined together on land to form thecompleted ship’s hull prior to launch.The result of this early outfitting andmodular construction was a ship 74percent complete at launch. The ship’slaunching was just as innovative asher construction. LHD-5 was rolledfrom her construction area to a float-ing drydock for launch on a rail trans-fer system. The drydock was then posi-tioned over a deep-water pit and bal-lasted down, allowing LHD-5 to floatfree.

LHD-5 entered service with the U.S.Atlantic Fleet when commissioned on20 September 1997.

USS Bataan,A city at seaYou have entered a tradition-rich cul-ture of nautical life and a unique wayof living and working. The ship is“awake” 24 hours a day. The crewworks morning, evening and nightshifts, known as “watches”. In additionto working their regular jobs, Sailorsparticipate in the ship’s numerousdrills, such as man overboard, aban-don ship, every Bataan Sailor is taughthow to save the ship in the event offire, flooding or battle damage.

When crewmembers are not working,they can take advantage of many ser-vices offered on the ship. Like a smallcity, it has equivalent services of:Restaurants, Store, Bank (with ATMs),Post Office, Laundry/Dry Cleaners,Library, Photography Studio, PrintingPlant, Police Department, 2 BarberShops, College Courses, City Hall,Gym, TV and Radio Stations, Hospital,Chapel, Jail, Basketball Court,Chemical Lab, Fire Department, LegalServices, Electrical Power Plant and adentist.Among the officers and enlisted per-sonnel, there are 2 chaplains, doctors,

Captain David Taylor was commissioned anEnsign in August 1974 and designated aNaval Aviator in August 1975. Followingflight training, Captain Taylor reported toHM-12 in Norfolk as an H-53 (Sea Dragon)pilot and squadron legalofficer.

From September 1978 to September 1981he served in Washington, D.C. at theBureau of Naval Personnel (BUPERS) as anassignment officer; on President Reagan'sinaugural committee; and as a Joint Chiefsof Staff Intern officer. He returned to seaduty at HSL-37, NAS Barbers Point, HI.,where he made two LAMPS deploymentsaboard USS KNOX (FF-1052) and USSFRANCIS HAMMOND (FF-1067). InNovember of 1984, he reported to theCollegeof Command and Staff, U.S. NavalWar College. Captain Taylor graduatedwith honors as the U.S. student in theNaval Staff College international class, andearned M.A. degrees in National Securityand Strategic Studies from the NWC, andInternational Relations from Salve ReginaCollege.

Captain Taylor returned to the Norfolk fleetin January of 1986 as a squadronOperations Officer, MaintenanceDepartment Head and DetachmentOfficer-in-Charge. In January 1988 hereturned to Washington, to the staff of theChief of Naval Operations (AviationWarfare). During his tenure asCommanding Officer of HSL-37 at NASBarbers Point, HI., the squadron won the1992 CNO Safety Award, Top TorpedoAward and deployed detachments to sup-port Operations Desert Shield and DesertStorm. From April 1993 to May 1995 heserved as Operations officer aboard USSINCHON (LPH-12) in support of operationsoff Somalia and Haiti. He reported to thestaff of Supreme Allied Command Atlanticin June 1995 where he served as a staffofficer responsible for the coordination ofPartnership for Peace activities and provid-ing advice on NATOenlargement issuesuntil April 1997.

Captain Taylor assumed duties as ExecutiveOfficer aboard USS BATAAN (LHD5) inSeptember 1997, and assumed commandof BATAAN on 10 July 1998.

Personal awards include the DefenseSuperior Service Medal, the MeritoriousService Medal (2), Navy CommendationMedal (2) and other service, campaign andunit awards.

When Japanese forces enteredMariveles, they had captured 76,000prisoners, most of whom were sick,wounded or suffering from malnutri-tion. The Japanese supply line, barelysufficient to support their own troops,would be unable to transport thesePOWs. The prisoners were forced tomarch the 65 miles of treacherous ter-rain to the Japanese POW Camp,Camp O’Donnell, to the north. Theinfamous ”Death March” had begun.Many members of the prisoner garri-son were systematically executed,while the sick and weak were pushedto exhaustion before being bayonetedor beaten to death with the butt endof a Japanese rifle. Many of the54,000 who survived the marchacross Bataan would later succumb todisease or torture while imprisoned.The Bataan ”Death March”, recognizedas one of the greatest inhumanities ofWWII, is also one of the greatest dis-plays of heroism and human spirit onthe part of those who did survive.

By May 6, on the island of Corregidor,Japanese troops forced the surrenderof Wainwright and all U.S. and Alliedforces in the Philippines. It would benearly two-and-a-half years beforeGeneral MacArthur could fulfill hispromise to return to, and retake fromthe Japanese, the Philippine Islands.

USS BATAAN (LHD 5) commemoratesthose who served and sacrificed in thePhilippines in the name of freedom inthe Pacific.

Technical DataBATAAN (LHD-5) is the fifth ship to bechristened into the WASP (LHD-1)Class of U.S. Navy MultipurposeAmphibious Assault Ships. The firstfour LHDs — USS WASP (LHD-1), USS

ESSEX (LHD-2), USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3) and USS BOXER (LHD-4) — arealready serving the Fleet around theworld. Following BATAAN, which wascommissioned in September 1997, aretwo additional LHDs, BONHOMMERICHARD (LHD-6) and IWO JIMA (LHD-7).

Massive cranes place LHD 5’s super-structure The principal mission of WASP Classships is to enable the Navy/MarineCorps team to accomplish a seamlesstransition from the sea to a land bat-tle, primarily as the command ship ofan Amphibious Ready Group (ARG).LHDs are specifically designed to layoff a troubled area of the world, andinsert forces ashore by helicopters and50 m.p.h. LCAC hover craft. Theassault forces are provided combat airsupport by embarked AV-8B Harrier IIV/STOL ”jump-jets”. One ship of thecurrent class, USS KEARSARGE (LHD-3),served as the base ship for the suc-cessful rescue of Air Force CaptainScott O’Grady from Serbian-held terri-tory in Bosnia.

In its role of commanding anAmphibious Ready Group, an LHD isfully capable of amphibious assault,advance force and special purposeoperations, as well as non-combatantevacuation and other humanitarianmissions. Additionally, the ships arefully-equipped with command andcontrol (C4I) systems for flagship com-mand duty; and have medical facilities— including a 600 bed hospital —second only to the Navy’s HospitalShips in capability.

Een van de weinige zaken die niet geheel op toeristen draait maar tevens de plaat-selijke bevolking tot haar clientèle mag rekenen is restaurant BEI CLAUS. In dezedoor Ellie en Sue beheerde eetgelegenheid is het goed toeven. Bij binnenkomstheb je meteen het gevoel dat je een beetje thuis bent en toch uit. Het eerste doorde gastvrijheid, het tweede door de internationale kaart. BEI CLAUS heeft als eenvan de specialiteiten een spies met heerlijke vleesgerechten en bijbehorende sausjesen groenten. Bij het eten van een varkenshaas met Stroganoffsaus, één van de huis-specialiteiten, welke met een hele verzameling toebehoren wordt geserveerd, kun jehet gerecht naar hartelust zelf op smaak brengen. Een echte aanrader zeker eenkeertje proberen. Ook de mosselen in knoflooksaus uit de oven zijn overheerlijk. Totslot nog even aandacht voor een heerlijk nagerecht met als hoofdbestanddeel fram-bozenijs. Heel verfrissend en het verdrijft het zgn. “volle gevoel” dat je soms na heteten wel eens kunt hebben. Eten bij BEI CLAUS is echt “uit eten” lekker, gezellig enongedwongen. Met zijn tweetjes of met een grote groep (vrijgezellenfeesten e.d.)het kan er allemaal. Kortom BEI CLAUS is een zaak met voor ieder wat wils en naarwij begrepen hebben, zijn ze ook van de winter enkele dagen per week geopend.Welke, dat kunt u beter even zelf vragen aan Ellie en Sue van Restaurant Bei Clausin de c./Rodriquez Pomatta, 14 in Salou ( nr 34 op de plattegrond)

In discotheek Snoepy’s is het dit jaar echt feest. Nog nooit hebben zoveel landgeno-ten hun avonden, nachten, in deze discotheek doorgebracht dan dit jaar. Niet zoverwonderlijk natuurlijk als je bedenkt dat het één van de enigste discotheken inSalou is waar je als Nederlander echt van harte welkom bent. Nadat begin dit jaarhet nieuwe gedeelte in gebruik is genomen werd al snel duidelijk dat dit één vande gezelligste cafés van Salou zou worden. Sfeervol ingericht en in allure niet onder-doende voor een Hardrock café is het in dit Snoepy’s café goed toeven. Ze hebbendit jaar wel heel erg hun best gedaan om steeds weer entertainment van de boven-ste plank te organiseren in Discotheek Snoepy’s. Getuige de professionele Go-Godanser. Natuurlijk weet het bedienend personeel ook hoe je de sfeer er in brengt.De D.J.’s weten ook precies wat wij Nederlanders lekkere muziek vinden en in dediscotheek kun je dan ook steeds de nieuwste hits beleven. In het café is het alle-maal iets rustiger zodat je zelf kunt kiezen wat je wilt horen. Daarnaast kun je ookgezellig op het grote terras plaatsnemen en een beetje tot rust komen dat is somsbest wel eens lekker. Discotheek Snoepy’s is geopend tot 6 uur onder de morgen, 7dagen per week. Aan alle mooie dingen komt een eind en dat betekent een knal-lende afscheidsparty op zaterdag 30 oktober. Dan gaat de discotheek voor het laatstopen dit jaar en moet je weer tot volgend jaar april wachten.

Beste Sportvrienden,

Het is dit jaar weer geluktom het zaalvoetbaltoer-nooi in Salou te organise-ren. Een toernooi welkevorig jaar met veel enthou-siasme is ontvangen indeze bloeiende sportievebadplaats, met z’n vele uit-gaansmogelijkheden enattracties.Met assistentie van plaatselijke persoonlijkheden en spontane hulpvan medereizigers groeide ons toernooi vorig jaar uit tot een prach-tig aanvullend evenement in Salou, waar verbroedering tussenvakantiegangers en ingezetenen belangrijker was dan sportief suc-ces. Als iedereen weer hetzelfde steentje wil bijdragen kunnen wijhet succes van vorig jaar evenaren. Zonder uw sportieve instellingen sociale bijdrage is evenaring niet haalbaar.Een special welkom voor de teams van Ziekenhuis Walcheren,Knabbel & Babbel, De Lange Wapper en de Kempische ZVB, die ditjaar voor het eerst meedoen.Er zal met twaalf teams gestreden worden om het Recreatieve enhet Prestatieve kampioenschap van het PNL-Doesport toernooi. Vierteams meer dan vorig jaar. Uw kwaliteiten als sportman/sportvrouwkunt u tonen in de zaal van de Gemeentelijke Sporthal van Salou.Wanneer kwaliteit en inzet gepaard gaan met de OlympischeGedachte, zal dit internationaal evenement een behoorlijke bijdrageleveren tot verbroedering door sport.Met dank aan de mensen die op welke wijze danook hun mede-werking aan dit toernooi verlenen. Zonder uw speciale bijdrage isorganisatie van deze sportweek niet mogelijk.Ik wens u ook dit jaar een succesvol, maar vooral sportief verblijf inSalou.
