WORKING ICONS: THE RSPCA The RSPCA receives thousands of job applications every year but it’s not all about puppy rescue. inspectors have to be prepared to handle large snakes as well as hot-headed members of the public. 1 In 1822 when Richard Martin

steered the first anti-cruelty Bill1) for animals through Parliament, animals were simply seen as products you could exploit. The world’s first ever Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was founded and in 1840 Queen Victoria added the Royal seal of approval. As word spread about the work of the RSPCA, funds poured in and soon London’s single inspector was joined by a team of regional officers who formed the heart of today’s national network of 175 branches in England and Wales.

2 The RSPCA employs 323 uniformed inspectors and 146 Animal Collection Officers who can be called on at any time of the day or night to attend to animals in distress. Its inspectors also play an important part in educating the public about animal welfare. They have to rescue animals and sadly, in some cases, put badly-hurt creatures to sleep. Although inspectors don’t currently have the authority to prosecute, they can order the removal into care of animals in danger. There is also an international branch which can help respond to emergencies such as oil spills.

3 If you want to work for the RSPCA, be sure to check out a new 13-part series of Animal Planet films on TV: Have You Got What It Takes? It looks at how recruits are prepared for the role of RSPCA inspector with a series of challenges similar to training for the army or the police. Challenges

include abseiling down the cliffs and tower blocks, powerboating, going undercover and handling angry 15ft long Burmese pythons. Inspectors are also taught how to cope with their emotions when facing cruelty to and neglect of animals and meeting aggressive owners.

4 Historically, all RSPCA inspectors were men but 18 of the 19 trainees featured in the Animal Planet films are female. They were selected from more than 1,000 applicants. Melissa Furey, 24, who worked as a prison officer for several years in Manchester, says that the training she got helped her to handle difficult situations with angry pet owners. Ben Strangwood, 28, an inspector based in south-east London said: “It is a good idea to get some experience working with animals but 80 percent of the problem is dealing with people. You never know what you are going to find when you follow up a call. I would be lying if I said I’ve never been scared when confronting an owner.”


5 Ben added that the Animal Planet series gave a fair idea of the work involved in being an RSPCA inspector and he hoped that it would encourage more men into the profession despite the fact that so many women recruits

How I ran around the world 25-YEAR-OLD DAN WILSON TELLS ABOUT A

YEAR IN WHICH HE RAN 26 MARATHONS

1 I’d survived a heat wave in Trinidad

and nearly killed myself running up a Swiss alp, yet here I was lying bleeding on the ground with the end so temptingly in sight. Four miles into the last of my 26 marathons, I suddenly got tangled up in some wire and took the mother of all tumbles. My knees and elbows took the full force of the fall and I was in a mess. But having come so far, there was no way I was going to fail, even if it meant crossing the line in a wheelchair. Luckily, I was able to hitch a lift to the nearest A&E department1) where I was patched up within an hour. I rejoined the race at the point where I had fallen and hobbled the rest of the marathon. In spite of the pain, I felt an incredible sense of achievement.

2 Over the past year I have pushed my body to the limit. My father Richard, who’s 62, was told seven years ago that he had Parkinson’s disease. I ran a few half marathons to raise money for the Parkinson’s Society but I wanted to do more. So I decided to complete a marathon for every letter of the alphabet. Finding all 26 was a challenge and I had to be a little creative. X for example was for the Exe Marathon in Exmouth. And ideally, I would have spaced them out at the rate of two a month but I ended up running two marathons on successive days.

3 Before starting, in Dubai, I’d never done a marathon but I did plenty of preparation, training up to five times a week. All the hard work paid off when I completed the race in four hours, two minutes. It proved to be my

fastest time. About a week before a race I eat lots of steak and eggs for protein, then switch to pasta for carbohydrates. Just before every run I eat a bowl of porridge. Over the past 12 months I’ve realised that my

body is like an engine: the better the fuel you give it, the better it runs.

4 The hardest marathon was Zermatt, in Switzerland, where I ran up a mountain. After finishing in more than seven hours I couldn’t speak. My favourite was London because it’s so well-organised and I had lots of my friends watching. In Barcelona I slipped and hurt my knee on a cobble. For the next three or four marathons it gave me a lot of trouble. In Krakow, Poland the knee seized up. It improved but I did have to take a month’s break and change my schedule.

5 My dad, who is on medication but still very active was there for 15 races along with my mum. I set out to raise £26,000 and I’m about halfway there. Attracting sponsorship proved to be difficult because Parkinson’s disease is wrongly considered an “old man’s condition”.

6 I wouldn’t recommend anyone doing 26 marathons every year. But it’s true that exercise is good for your mental health. Although I’ve lost my job twice, I’ve managed to stay positive. I’ve started training again and

next year I’d like to improve my times.

The devices come with headphones and a triple-A battery. When you’re ready to listen, simply pull a protective tab to get the battery going.

The Playaway cannot be loaded with a different book, but you can add it to your library and listen to it again and again.

A small screen shows the elapsed time, and the device has buttons for fast-forwarding, rewinding, adding bookmarks and skipping chapters.

There’s even a Voice Speed button, which compresses the audio slightly, reducing the total playing time without sacrificing audio quality. The devices are available at bookshops, retail stores and online for $35 to $50.

IPod owners may smirk at a one-book-only device, but I think Playaway may be the easiest and fastest way to get from the store to Chapter 1. John Biggs (NYT)

Sophie Campbell went to Singapore for the city’s celebrated ‘Night Safari’

OONLIGHT. Out of the trees steps a tiger. Orange coat, white belly, all griddled with stripes. Sprays of whiskers caught in the moonbeams. Massive paws. He strolls down

to the river, files his claw thoughtfully on a log, steps 5

over it and slides into the water. The territory is 40 hectares of rain-forest, next to

the respected Singapore Gardens. The Night Safari Park opens at 7.30pm as night falls and closes at midnight. Its inhabitants are the nocturnal creatures — otters, 10

leopards, rhinos — which you never really see in a daylight zoo because they are curled up and snoring.

Night Safari, now nine years old, is one of Singapore's top tourist attractions. Even so, the old rules about animals still apply. On the night I was there, the 15

Creatures Of The Night Show — with humorous commentary by a keeper with a headset — ground to a halt because the first act (a large owl) refused to come on. The mutiny spread: a leopard failed to appear on its platform.

The Night Safari is staggeringly popular and since its great charm is the illusion that you are out there with the animals, it really is worth aiming for solitude. 20

You can walk — there are three different walking trails — or take the open-sided tram, which does a West Loop and an East Loop.

My advice is to turn up at 9pm, avoid the show, always packed, and while everyone else is watching it, do one of the walking trails. The authentic jungle noises alone make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. 25

You should get back just as the people watching the show rush off on the trams. This is your cue to dine at the Bongo Bongo Burger Bar and walk another trail to work off the food. As the stampede begins for the exit, you nip on to the last tram (11.15pm), and survey the creatures in peace!

Eat up or pay up

One London restaurant is cracking down on customers. Emily Ashton finds out why

t is a guilt trip inflicted on most children who leave sprouts or cabbage on their plates. “Eat up,”

their mothers chide, “think of those starving children in Africa who don’t have such luxuries.” A few grimacing mouthfuls later, the plate is empty. Adults will be reminded of their youth when they step into one Nigerian restaurant in east London and are faced with a £2.50 fine if they fail to finish what they have taken for dinner. At the Obalende Suya Express restaurant in Dalston, the penalty for greed is donated straight to the local Oxfam shop.

2 The West African barbecue eatery attracts a full house every Sunday with its Grill Greedy buffet, with trays and dishes overflowing with steaming meats and fried bananas. As customers fill their plates, however, they can hardly miss a big red sign warning them to make sure they eat it all up. Lara Odebunmi, who owns the restaurant with her husband Toks, says: “We realised a lot of people were wasting their food rather than finishing it, just because they could ‘eat as much as they liked’. They kept on 23 but they were only ever able to finish one plateful. At the end of the night, we felt really bad dumping all this food into the bin.”

3 FareShare, a national organisation that redistributes surplus food from restaurants and shops to local charities, believes that the food sector

accounts for more than a third of all the waste produced in Britain. More than 12,000 people each day eat food that FareShare has 24 restaurant kitchens and shops’ chillers. But the majority of Britain’s tens of thousands of restaurants simply bin the food they are unable to sell.

4 The Odebunmis set up Suya Express 10 years ago and run another restaurant in Peckham. They hope the buffet fine, introduced last year, will make people think about how much food is wasted. “Lots of people in Africa don’t have the opportunity to see this amount of food, let alone to buy it,” says Toks. “We came up with the charge to make customers think about poverty. If only people could see how privileged we really are in England,” adds Lara.

Customers have to walk through the fast-food front to reach the softly lit dining room at the back, where brightly coloured paintings adorn the walls and chefs work busily in the open kitchen. African music drifts out quietly as muted football matches are played on the wall-mounted television screen. The restaurant’s name comes from Obalende, the popular area of Nigeria’s former capital, Lagos, which is famed for its suya: spiced meat that has been specially grilled on skewers.

6 Although it is the take-out part of the business, selling barbecued sandwiches and suya dishes, that attracts the most diners on weekdays, it is the dining area that draws in the guests at weekends. “Our buffet regulars love the pounded yam, the jollof rice (steamed rice with tomatoes, onion, pepper and spices) and the barbecued chicken,” says manager Kenny Amuzu. At £13.95, the unlimited food deal is good value, notwithstanding the possible ₤2.50 surcharge.

7 The Suya Express isn’t the only restaurant with charitable inclinations. Sandwich chain Pret A Manger also offers its remaining produce to charity, supplying FareShare with around 18

tonnes of ‘quality surplus food’ last year.

FareShare insists any food it collects must at least be within its use-by date and appropriately packaged. “It’s certainly a lot more difficult to give food away now as there are more safety rules to comply with – but for very good reasons,” says Hargraves.

The red sign doesn’t seem to have put anyone off. “At first, those who hadn’t seen the notice were a bit negative but when they realised the money was going to charity, they were much more understanding,” she says. “The response has been overwhelming. Customers don’t waste food any more – they appreciate it!”

coffee shops into working environments. The larger chains, which charge for wifi access, say that sometimes up to 90 per cent of their ‘sit in’ customers are there to work. But while most of them welcome the new Bedouins, some smaller cafés are struggling to cope. Jonathan Arana, who runs The Breakfast Club in Soho, central London, said: “It’s a major issue and has got worse. We have 10 tables and if five are taken up with single people surfing the internet and only buying a couple of drinks, then we are not making any money.”

a world helicopter record in December 2003, she crashed on the ice of Antarctica in a tangle of crushed metal. She was severely injured and lay waiting in the piercing cold for a rescue team that took hours to arrive. Now she’s having another go. And it’s precisely the same challenge: circling the globe in a tiny helicopter via both North and South Poles, which is a feat of skill and endurance never achieved before. So why is she attempting something that almost killed her last time? “It’s unfinished business,” she explains. “We’ve ghosts to lay to rest.”

2 Murray holds several flying records of her own. She was the first woman to co-pilot a helicopter around the globe and the first to do it solo. But these were both flights from East to West. The big one, this truly nerve-racking challenge, is to circle the earth via the poles experiencing

the coldest and the hottest landscapes. They will fly over jungle, desert and frozen seas, making 127 landings in 34 countries in 189 exhausting days.

3 When attempting this challenge with co-pilot Colin Bodhill in 2003, Murray crashed in a blizzard on Antarctica in temperatures of -40 degrees Celsius. Lying in a hastily put up tent, with a dislocated elbow, cracked ribs and facial cuts alongside Bodhill whose back was broken, she distracted herself from the pain by thinking of her three children and her four grandchildren.

4 It was certainly the idea of release that drew Murray to the sport in 1994, aged 54. “It gave me a whole new perspective,” she says. “Life was two-dimensional before and then became three-dimensional. You are a bird, you can soar, it’s exciting.” But what propelled her to world record attempts? “I’m someone who loves to go off the beaten track.”

5 Murray looks fit and young at 66, and is hugely determined. But she admits to lying awake at night thinking of the flight she will have to make across the fearsome Drake’s Passage between South America and Antarctica. She also plans to land on the spot where she crashed. Meanwhile the most touching part of this extraordinary journey is also the most unimportant. Murray, who has a glittering flying career behind her, has quietly parcelled up her jewellery for distribution among her children in case this time she does not return.
