TECHNOLOGY’S ROLE IN EDUCATION

Page 2: Edu 210 module 12

Technology in the classroom for the sake of technology is no longer enough…

…We can do better…

Technology should allow for greater student engagement ….

The use of technology should be engaging by allowing for student creativity, collaboration, and fun. Indeed, technology can help teachers encourage their students to be engaged thinkers as a part of the 3Es of the new curriculum. For example, using GoAnimate, students can create videos on a certain social issue and share these videos online with their classmates for comments and feedback.

Technology should be used to expand opportunities for learning…

• Through the use of assistive technology and a UDL framework, some students who may have not been able to meet curricular objective before can meet these objectives. For example, Aroga software that assists with writing can help students to express their understanding of curriculum.

• Mobile learning creates opportunities for learning by allowing students to learn at anywhere, anytime, and anyplace. As a result students, not the school system, become the center of learning. For example, tablets with internet connections can allow students to access class content and work on assignments while on the bus.

Through assistive technology… Through mobile learning…

Technology should be used in education to teach students how to be responsible users of technology…Technology is becoming increasingly important in today’s world. As a result, students need training in how to use it responsibly. This includes an understanding of copyright, how to prevent cyberbullying, how to use technology, and appropriate uses of technology.

How will the philosophy impact me as a teacher?• As a teacher, I will be guided by my own Philosophy of Teachnology in my practice. First, I will use technology to provide tasks for my students that allow them to meaningfully engage in their own learning. Second, I will use technology to expand opportunities for education through both assistive technology and mobile learning. Finally, I will conscientiously teach my students how to be responsible users of technology. All of this won’t be easy, but my philosophy will give me a roadmap to follow.
