Solvothermal Synthesis of Molybdenum–Tungsten Oxides and Their Application for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting
Molybdenum and tungsten oxides are of interest as semiconductors for the
production of clean and sustainable energy. Here we show that synergistic effects
arising from a combination of non-crystallinity and plasmonic resonance in mixed
molybdenum/tungsten oxides can lead to improved efficiency for the photo-
electrochemical (PEC) splitting of water. The quasi-binary Mo/W oxides were
synthesized solvothermally on a gram scale. Size, structure, morphology, and
electronic properties of the as-prepared microspheres were characterized by
scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM, TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD),
Raman, optical absorption (UV–vis), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
Molybdenum oxide benefits from W-substitution and the concomitant metal
reduction. The increased number of charge carriers leads to higher photocurrents
for Mo0.5W0.5O2.1 (5.25 mA cm–2), the most reduced phase compared to
Mo0.89W0.11O2.7 (1.75 mA cm–2). Long-term photocurrent stability tests (2000 s)
under photo illumination confirmed the chemical stability of Mo/W oxides under
sunlight. The improved PEC performance is attributed to the synergistic effect of
increased charge carrier concentration due to metal reduction, suppressing the
formation of crystalline metallic oxides through disorder, and tuning the absorption
in the visible and near-IR range by the formation of W5+ and Mo5+ sites.

Interconnected Hollow Cobalt Phosphide Grown on Carbon Nanotubes for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction
Transition-metal phosphides are deemed as potential alternative to platinum for
large-scale and sustainable electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water. In
this study, facile preparation of interconnected hollow cobalt monophosphide
(CoP) supported on carbon nanotubes is demonstrated and evaluated as a low-
cost electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction. Hexamethylenetetramine is
used as a structure-directing agent to guide the formation of interconnected
cobalt oxide, which further grows into interconnected hollow CoP. Interconnected
and hollow microstructural artifacts impart benign attributes, such as enhanced
specific and electrochemically active surface area, low intrinsic charge transfer
resistance, high interfacial charge transfer kinetics, and improved mass transport
to the electrocatalyst. As a result, the as-prepared electrode exhibits remarkable
electrocatalytic performance, low onset (18 mV) and overpotential (η10 = 73 mV);
small Tafel slope (54.6 mV dec–1); and high turnover frequency (0.58 s–1 at η = 73
mV). In addition, the electrode shows excellent electrochemical stability.

Facile hydrogenation of N-heteroarenes by magnetic nanoparticles supported sub-nanometric Rh catalysts in aqueous medium
The hydrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic precursors in aqueous medium
at low temperature without imposing molecular hydrogen pressure is quite
challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis and performance of a novel catalyst
capable of facile hydrogenation (employing tetrahydroxydiboron (THDB) as the
reductant) of N-heteroarenes in water at 80 °C with good recyclability. Rhodium
particles in the sub-nano range (<1 nm) were produced by in situ reduction of a Rh
precursor on freshly prepared superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs,
Fe3O4), using aqueous ammonia as a reducing agent at 50 °C. HRTEM and elemental
mapping images reveal a homogeneous distribution of <1 nm Rh particles within the
matrix of Fe3O4 nanoparticles having an average size within a narrow range of 7–9 nm.
The superparamagnetic nature of the composite was confirmed by VSM analysis. The
Rh@Fe3O4 catalyst was found to be highly efficient in the heterogeneous
hydrogenation of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds with quantitative
conversion. It showed selectivity towards the hydrogenation of 1,2,3,4-
tetrahydroquinoline (py-THQ) in water using THDB with a high TOF of 1632 h−1. These
results are compared with the conversion and selectivity data obtained from
reduction with molecular hydrogen gas pressure. The catalytic activity is extended to
the successful hydrogenation of simple aromatics like benzene, toluene etc. Isotopic
labelling studies were performed to determine the source of hydrogen in quinoline

hydrogenation in the presence of THDB. It
was found that it could be used for 16
consecutive cycles with gaseous
hydrogen,without any undesired by-
products; it also retained its original
crystallinity.
