    10

Design is a creative activity rooted in a widelyinductive conception process. It avors a pragmaticapproach and requires a composite knowledge inwhich the artistic education o design practitionersplays an essential part. It advocates a human-centered approach, doted with an ethical dimensionwhich implies an involvement in social, economical, technical and cultural felds.

The success o a workshop is based onseveral actors:

Time : it should not exceed a period o one week.Space : it should take place in one single

location.Participants : it should gather people romdi erent cultures, with di erent backgrounds.Information : every participant should beaware o the organization and the general goal.Knowledge : every participant should voicehis/her own perception o the theme.

    13

One possible way to share and to documentthe dynamic process o design is to considerthe design education community learners, teachers and other players as a communityo practice.

What is a community o practice?Communities o practice are groups opeople who share a concern or a passion

or something they do and learn how to do itbetter as they interact regularly.

The CREDO workshop is an experimentdesigned to give birth to such a community.

    1

The theme chosen for the 2007 session wasthe following: Life Scenarios for an IdealCity 2022.

Originally, abbeys were conceived as theideal cities o God. The entire organizationand li estyle inside their walls revolved aroundmeditation, contemplation and devotion.Compliance to the rules prevailed within thissecluded world cut o rom contemporarysociety. Now that we live or better or or

worse in a global, open and interconnec-ted world, what kind o scenarios can be de-signed by the young creative pro essionals otomorrow in order to anticipate the evolutiono our shared environment and li estyles overthe next f teen years or so?

During this workshop, individuals rom all overEurope have come together, emulated andcon ronted their cultural backgrounds and workhabits. Their intense interaction has ueledup a great collective adventure. O tentimesdisconcerted by the themes broad andprospective scope, the teams have implementeddi erent strategies to con ront or bypass theissues they were aced with and fnally producedtangible and concrete outcomes. Does this meanthat the creation process in design always goesthrough an object? Is this object a necessarystep?
