introduCtie

Enkele voorbeelden:

“The artist is interested in the conception of the work. He perceives it only when there is something to perceive.”(De kunstenaar is in de conceptie van het werk geïnteresseerd.

“To leave oneself open to new experience ones mind must be open to make an illogical choice and then to follow it through to its conclusion.”

“Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to con-clusions that logic cannot reach.”

Page 4: Christian Kerez

“A priori perception is impossible. It implies imagining the piece as it will not exist.” (A priori waarnemen is onmogelijk.

“Perception alters the mind and may change further concepts.”

“All judgements are art if they are concerned with art, and fall within the conventions of art” (Alle oordelen zijn kunst wanneer ze betrekking hebben op kunst en vallen onder de conventies van kunst, 8ste zin, 2de manuscript)

“The artist's concept will alter the viewer's perception if the work is suc-cessful, but it may take time.”

introduCtionLeWitt op (°1928, Hartford, Connecticut - †2007, New York).

Quelques exemples:

“The artist is interested in the conception of the work. He perceives it only when there is something to perceive.”(L’artiste est intéressé par la conception de l’œuvre.

“To leave oneself open to new experience ones mind must be open to make an illogical choice and then to follow it through to its conclusion.”

“Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to con-clusions that logic cannot reach.” It implies imagining the piece as it will not

Jusqu’à présent, Christian Kerez a relativement peu construit.

“Perception alters the mind and may change further concepts.”

“All judgements are art if they are concerned with art, and fall within the conventions of art” (Tous les jugements sont de l’art lorsqu’ils se réfèrent à l’art et tombent sous les conventions de l’art, 8e phrase, 2e manuscrit)

“The artist’s concept will alter the viewer’s perception if the work is suc-cessful, but it may take time.”

introduCtionThis is the first foreign solo exhibition by the Swiss architect Christian Kerez, who was born in Venezuela. With his design for the Museum of Art in Vaduz (Lichtenstein), which was built in collaboration with the architects Morger & Degelo in 1998, he received his first international acclaim. Ten years later, in the spring of 2008, another museum project of his once again attracted international attention: the prize-winning design in the competition for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (Poland).

The ‘Conflicts, politics, Construction, Privacy, Obsession’ exhibition does not present us with an overview of Kerez’ work as a whole but highlights four definitive ‘moments’. These moments not only involve four different buildings but also various ways of looking at a building. The title of the ex-hibition also points in this direction. Christian Kerez understands architec-ture as a total practice. In this presentation, his main purpose is to display aspects which are rarely referred to in exhibitions: conflicts with builders, politics, exposure to the media, complex technical construction aspects, his own perceptions and personal obsessions. The exhibition shows that not only does he take a keen interest in these marginal phenomena, but ultima-tely they are themselves a condition of architecture.

So far Christian Kerez does not have many actual buildings to his name. He is extremely consistent, individual and meticulous in what he does. In this exhibition the almost sculptural design of the four projects is well thou-ght-out and reduced to essentials. It is always combined with a daring and unorthodox method of construction. Nevertheless in their contextual em-bedment they give us an impression of being reserved and quiet. This con-trast creates a subtle tension between the solid tectonic and the flowing spatial presentation. In a sense, the buildings exude an intellectual aura of quiet unobtrusiveness. The whole as well as the details reveal a thorough and emphatic study of architecture which, on the one hand, pays homage to history and on the other hand indicates new trends. It is an architecture that not only questions and reflects but also examines and speculates.

We are struck by thoroughly conceptually determined Christian Kerez’ de-signs are. But can architecture actually be conceptual? After all, doesn’t architecture by definition transcend the status of concept because of the fact it always has to be built? We cannot help but be aware of an amazing analogy with the ideas of the American artist Sol LeWitt (b. 1928, Hartford, Connecticut – d. 2007, New York). He is one of the most influential figures in Conceptual Art, an art movement that originated in the sixties and which aims to dematerialise art by questioning traditional views, ideas and links

and subjecting them to new rules. Sol LeWitt was not only concerned with the importance of the concept underlying a work of art. He too considered the execution to be of vital importance and necessary if one wanted to talk about the work at all. However, he did emphasise that it was an indisputable fact that a good concept was a quite indispensable and that consequently there was a causal connection between thinking and doing.

In 1968 he formulated his ideas in twenty-three so-called ‘Sentences on Conceptual Art’ which he then extended to thirty-five statements. He here defended the right relationships between the rational and the logical. He did not object to past art forms and art movements, but attempted to define his own viewpoint and that of friends with regard to what art should be. Although Sol LeWitt’s statements refer to art, they can also be applied to Christian Kerez’ architecture. If we replace ‘art’ with ‘architecture’ then the essential questions that are so characteristic of Kerez’ research suddenly become clear. Here are a few examples:

“The artist is interested in the conception of the work. He perceives it only when there is something to perceive.”(1st sentence, 1st manuscript)

“To leave oneself open to new experience, one’s mind must be open to ma-king an illogical choice and then to follow it through to its conclusion.” (6th sentence, 1st manuscript)

“Conceptual artists are mystics rather than rationalists. They leap to con-clusions that logic cannot reach.” (1st sentence, 2nd manuscript)

“A priori perception is impossible. It implies imagining the piece as it will not exist.” (4th sentence, 2nd manuscript)

“Perception alters the mind and may change further concepts.” (5th sentence, 2nd manuscript)

“All judgements are art if they are concerned with art, and fall within the conventions of art” (8th sentence, 2nd manuscript)

In an ambivalent age when dentists and IT experts are also adopting the

Page 26: Christian Kerez

concept idea, LeWitt’s inflexible statements always sound fresh and new. When they are applied to architecture – and particularly to Christian Kerez’ projects – they reveal an unprecedented rationality, shrewdness and topica-lity. In the light of this, instead of ‘Conflicts, Politics, Privacy and Obsession’, the title of this exhibition could just as well be ‘Observations, reflections, Judgements, Choices & Visions’. On many levels Christian Kerez’ work as a whole, which is still in its infancy, is inspiring, provocative and stimulating. Whether or not it is enduring – to use a word favoured by Sol LeWitt – still remains to be seen.

“The artist’s concept will alter the viewer’s perception if the work is suc-cessful, but it may take time.” (14th sentence, 2nd manuscript)

The ‘HmeW’ (Haus mit einer Wand – House with One Wall) project princi-pally questions the two-family dwelling building type. Here, houses which are usually built separate from one another, determine one another in a very direct manner. Both houses have three storeys and are defined by one wall only which serves as a dividing wall, support structure, installation shaft and space divider. Ultimately, therefore, the wall is the house because it helps to determine the inside and the outside, the light and shady side and the size of the space.

Warsaw held an international competition for its new Museum of Modern Art. One hundred and nine people submitted their work and the winner was Christian Kerez. The simple, sober design resulted in great controversy in the media. The reason is probably because the project focused on ‘in-ner’ values and the concept differs considerably from current ‘Post-Bilbao-Shape Architecture’. The design is particularly appealing because its links a static character with fundamental elements. While the ground floor – like a market hall – still has a grid of one hundred and twelve pillars, the number diminishes first on the first floor, which comprises a refreshment room, li-brary and administrative offices, up to the attic where there are only eight pillars.

The first project Kerez carried out under his own name, the multiple-family dwelling in Forsterstrasse in Zurich, is based on a set of rules and regula-tions. The volumetrics of the house have been structurally neutralised to form an inextricably intertwined and architecturally comprehensible whole, based on separate, unconnected design regulations. The heart of the de-sign is formed by solid supporting wall panels in smooth, seamless precast concrete that order the open structure of the buildings without rigidly divi-ding the spaces. The walls are placed on top of one another, are suspended from one another, protrude over one another and make one another essen-tial. As the spaces are open and flow into one another there are no spatial hierarchies or divisions into various living zones.
