    MARCH DEAF CLUB

    On Friday February 7th2014 we had a lot of people come to play Crazy putting.John Uren organized it and brought two different crazy putting games. Both gameshad to be played to get the highest points to win. Michael Manchett was the

    winner. Thanks to John Uren. To celebrate St. Valentines night we had a smallparty. Also our club gave Ann Ratcliffe a 70 thbirthday cake for February 8th. Wecut and ate two different cakes in one evening. See photo of Ann We had to wearcoats because the central heating had broken down in the hall but no-onecomplained.On Friday March 7th 2014 as I unlocked the front door of St Peters Hall I wassurprised to see the hall had been decorated in a nice bright colour. The heatinghad been fixed and new flooring laid.(see photo N0 4). Artist Jamie McCulloughsparents brought some of his work to display in a Fantasy Art Exhibition.He hasusher syndrome. His communicator guide is Emma Burrow. Using sign language

    he spoke about his life and told how he creates pictures by computer. His pictureswere beautiful and he sold some on the night.     David Cook who lives in Ely saw the Anne Frank Exhibition at Ely Cathedral. Heasked me and Madeleine Hampstead if our club and Fenland Deaf Drop-in would

    MARCH DEAF CLUB(Cont)they offered to guide us round the show free of charge on 2thFebruary 2014. Isent out leaflets and 15 of us went. It was a fantastic exhibition and we alsowatched a DVD about the wartime diary of Annelies "Anne" Marie Frank one ofthe most discussed Jewish victims of the Holocaust. Thanks Madeleine for the

    Cambridge Deaf ClubOn January 18th we went to The Green Man in Trumpington for meal to celebratethe New Year and it was nice mealwe all enjoyed it. Then we went to Helens

    house for cup of tea and chat.On February 15th we played darts and it was great fun despite of the poor darts.Steve Cooper won the game. We had nice cake with tea which Helen made.March 15th the Deaf club was closed as most of us were out.April 12th only 3 of us went to deaf club and we were very disappointed with thenumber of people turned up. David Cook bought beautiful Easter cake for us.Thanks to him and it was lovely. We played Beetle.

    Peterborough Deaf ClubOn 8th February, we played the game Which Capital City.I laid 26 different flagsand I wrote it down on bit of paper of the name of the country, capital and secondtown and they have got to match them which is right.On 8th March, Kurling night, Good to see lots

    of people got involved. Good competitorsbetween Grandson (Will Palmer) andGrandparent (Godfrey Palmer). Will hadbeaten his Grandparent. Will Palmer also haswon the KurlingOn 12th April, Guess what food in the socks.I have put 24 different foods in the socksand people got to guess by feeling, smellingthe foods without seeing it. One person got the most right is 17/24, she got tinycup with easter egg. Well done to her.

    On May 10thwill be AGM. This is going to be my last AGM as I am going to stepdown for a break after 2-3years and Sue Foulstone, Janet Stocks and Lana

    Chapman are also going to step down too. I hope this Club will continue with newteam. I would like to say a big thanks to Sue Foulstone, Janet Stocks, MohammadUmar, Mujdad Malik and Lana Chapman for theirs good work and support forPeterborough Deaf Club and good team work.     Huntingdon Deaf & Hearing Club/BSL Friend ClubWe are meeting alternative months at the pub the Barley Mow on the high streetin Hartford and at St Barnabus Church. I am sorry for any confusion about whenwe are meeting and where but we will be meeting at the church hall on FRIDAY

    the 9th May, 11th July, 12th September 14th November at 7.30 until 9.30. This isthe second Friday of the month.We are meeting on the second TUESDAY of the month at the Barley Mow on theother months which is the 10th June, 12th August, 7th October and 9thDecember.     Peterborough Deaf Drop inIn January, the weatherbecame wetter with suddenoutbursts of rain, breaking

    records in parts of the UK,causing the deaf drop in tobe very quiet.

    In February, We had 2people from Comic Reliefvisited us to see how thedeaf people need Advocacy service for D/deaf peoplein Peterborough. Also, on the 11thof February wehad a delicious meal at Kaimas Lithuania Restaurant. Thanks to Mareks andVladimirs who arranged this wonderful night and gave a presentation so we

    learned many things about their country as well as their custom. It was awonderful night.

    In March, Jason Sharpes gave a presentation aboutthe Deaf Lobby day at the Westminster London onthe 17thMarch. Throughout the day over 250 peoplefrom all the UK met their 45 MPS in WestminsterLondon. We all had a fantastic day and wherelaughing hard on the improve comedy show on the29thMarch. Thanks Jason Sharpe, VladmirsKrumins, Amanda Jane Richards, Daryl Jackson,Mathew Gurney and David Sand we had a fantasticnight. Special CDA sponsored the Hall at the KeyTheatre for our great evening.

    Huntingdon Deaf Lunchtime GroupThis is a small group but well attended and we have average number of tenpeople, we have regular Support workers being available for Deaf People. Pleasesee report in Cambridge Lunchtime Group for your information/interest.

    Cambridge Deaf Lunchtime GroupAttendance for this group was disappointing as just over ten people regularlyattended this monthly group. We hope to arrange an outing for this group to goalong with other Lunchtime Groups at the end of June to Southwold and anotherlater this year to Woburn Safari Park later this year. Like all of our other drop-ins,we have Support workersavailable for Deaf People.We have agreed with Fire Station in Cambridge that Deaf people can visit at theirplace on Wednesday May 21stduring lunchtime and there will be a talk about Fire

    safety, also a possible tour of the station. I will give you more information a bitlater and this is open to anybody in the area of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.We also have booked on Tuesday June 10 that CDA for Benefits/DLA/PIP talk thatwill suit Deaf people. I will do a poster and send it to all deaf people in

    Cambridgeshire/Peterborough area soon and we will provide free lunch too. I willkeep you informed.JAMIE BILLAM

    Fenland Deaf Drop-inChristine Tarrant is back as Co-ordinator for this Drop-in as Michael Pape hadstepped down. The drop-in is still doing well but there was a low attendance inApril due to lot of people being away for Easter. Ruth Godden came to give a talkabout CDAs new services that started from 1stApril. I am doing this reportbecause Christine is busy in getting everything ready for her and Michael Papesbig day on May 10thwhich is a Wedding Day. Wow!     Peterborough Deaf Coffee MorningCoffee mornings continues to be a great success, with regular people, attendingevery fortnight, we've had some new faces turning up which is always nice. The

    atmosphere is very welcoming & warm, so if you've never been before, comealong for a coffee & a chat!GEMMA DIXON

    Tea and a Sign ChatThe last Tea and Sign in April went well with around 18 people attending.

    BSL Caf in Wisbech

    Computer Training

    Brendan Casey is available as a volunteer to help deaf people with Computertraining and he is able to communicate on a One to One basis using BSL. We havebeen very lucky to have Brendan as it is very difficult to find someone who has hisskills in using computers as well as being able to use a variety of differentcommunication methods to meet a wide range of communication needs! iPadsare one of the things he can help you with help you to understand how to get thebest out of it.     Editors articleI hope you all had a good Easter and I would like to apologise for the delay ofSpring Newsletter. I was hoping we would be able to release it before Easter butthat did not happened.The staff at CDA Office had been really busy and we are all doing our best inimproving our standards now that we have got successful funding fromCambridgeshire County Council. They have got a lot to do but we are gettingthere. You will see all theinformation at the back ofnewsletter.We are so pleased that the ImprovComedy in Peterborough KeyTheatre was a great success and

    CDA supported the group by

    contributing the room hire of thetheatre. We even managed to raisea collection of 79.61 for CDA whichis brilliant. Most of us went on toChartersthe pub on the boat and itwas wonderful to meet everyonethere, socially and relaxing. This iswhat it is all about! Congratulationsto Jason Sharpe for playing a bigpart and we are very happy to

    support him.Also we had Tenpin Bowling tournament which took place in Ely strikes on Sundayearly evening Feb 23rd. This was organised by Rebecca Andreo and she did abrilliant job. About twenty five people turned up and we split into five groups offour or five players each. The winner of the Man who got the highest points in totalof two games is Godfrey Palmer and the winner for Ladies is Ruth Godden. Bothwere presented with a bowling trophy. Everybody enjoyed the tournament and alot of them have said they would like to do it again and big thanks once more toRebecca.We would like to welcome Sarah Clark for joining CDA BSL Course as a Tutor. I

    wish her all the best of luck. We have done a lot of Deaf Awareness training so farthis year which I think is very good.Andy Palmer, very kindly is organising a Deaf film at Key Theatre in Peterboroughon June 10thfor us and this should be very good. We all look forward to thisexciting night.Also a trip to Fire Station in Cambridge on May 21stduring Deaf Awareness weekshould be worth visiting and another event booked on June 10thfor DLA/Pip &Benefit talk is a must to attend.JAMIE BiLLAM

    BSL Walk in GazeleyThe walk was organised by Ron Allenand it took place on Sunday April 6th.There were only five people, all deafand it took us nearly all day to

    complete six miles in a beautifulsurrounding. We had two breaks, oneto eat our packed lunch in a beautifularea and we really enjoyed thecountryside view. Our second breakwas in a very posh pub where we allenjoyed drinking a pint of beer. Thebarmaid can sign in BSL and she wasso pleased to see all of us so she wasmaking most of the sign language in

    front of all these wealthy snobbypeople. Wow! We were letting them know how beautiful language BSL was!Big thanks to Ron for the lovely day.

    There is specialist Social Workers who can work with you, your child, and otheragencies when you require advice, support and guidance to ensure your childs

    needs are met. We can provide practical advice on all aspects of language andcommunication, and can communicate using a variety of methods, includingBritish Sign Language.

    DEAF GREENBELTGreenbelt is a Christian Arts Festival where there is music, drama, dance, talks,

    things to look at and different kinds of Christian Worship all weekend. It has justmoved to Boughton House near Kettering so it is not too far away from us. Itstarts on August 22nd and finishes on the 25th but you can just come for the day.There is a shuttle bus from the middle of Kettering to the site if you come by busor train to Kettering. There is an interpreter team to make everything accessibleand if you want to come for the whole weekend the Deaf community campersusually camp together in the same area. Huntingdon BSL cafe church group areplanning on organising a day trip on the Sunday.

    Both meetings are Sign language supported. Live typing and loop system also included.

    The Cambridgeshire Deaf Association has new funding (money) from Cambridgeshire CountyCouncil from April 1st2014.

    This means we have new services for D/deaf people.Our services:

    Support Advocacy Drop- in Services BSL Training Deaf Awareness

    Deaf Church Deaf Social Events Information Sessions

    To make sure we fair and see lots of people we need to have form and wait list.If you would like support (help) or advocacy from CDA:

    1. Please fill in a form- we can post or email you form or you get at drop-in(dont worry if you dont know what to write, but your name and address is

    important)and post it to us or email [email protected] or fax 01223 411701

    2. When we get the form you will go on a listto wait for someone to visit you

    3. They will visit you and support youwith the problem

    4. When the problem is betterthey will stop working with you

    5. If you need them again you can fill in new formand you go on list wait for someone

    OR,

    Staff will be at all Deaf drop in if you would like to speak to them quick. We maybe support youwith small problems at the drop in, we can help quick.If we cant help quick you go on list wait.
