ANNOUNCEMENTS

18 AUGUST 2019 3 THE TWENTIETH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME

The Musings of Our Pastor

Try this on for size as a very unsettling reality-check or as something to disturb the tranquility of one's conscience. "The United States wastes enough food to fill up a 70,000-seat football stadium – every day." As I explored the Perspective Section of the Journal Gazette out of Fort Wayne about a month ago (July 10, 2019), this bold headline caught my atten-tion: "How we eat can help fix planet's woes". The article by Evan Lutz (the CEO of the Baltimore-based Hungry Harvest) was written for the Baltimore Sun. He asserts that food waste is so rampant in the United States that we waste 30-40% of our entire food supply, which is "the equivalent to tossing out 133 billion pounds of food and pouring $161 billion dollars down the drain annually." Such food waste, in the words of this writer, "is a moral and economic travesty." In many re-spects, it amounts to "using about 9% of the total landmass of the United States (about the size of New Mexico) to grow food that nobody eats." Quite noteworthy in the article was a report from the National Resources Defense Council, which indicates that "prepared foods or leftovers make up about 23% of the food that lands in trash cans". In closing his article, the writer offers these thoughts: "We can change the way we eat. The small decisions we make around meals will collec-tively make progress toward solving an enormous crisis. Eliminate waste, eat more plants, buy conscientiously and spread the word to your community." One of the big frustrations affecting the greater good of others in the community is the tendency of a vast number of persons in society to "shirk their responsibilities", and not really pay much attention to some of the significant or unfortu-nate consequences flowing out of their own day-to-day choices or lifestyle patterns. Planet Earth is the collective and only home that we share together with all of our brothers and sisters in the human family. Whether we are talking about food waste, the pollution of our air and water, or the reckless and irresponsible use of other earth's natural resources, my own day-to-day choices and lifestyle patterns do, in fact, affect the bigger picture of the well-being or the demise of our "common home". There may be something rather sinful or morally wrong to be acknowledged, if we casually disregard some of these current issues, and make little or no effort to incorporate "corrective measures", which display our rever-ence for God's gracious gifts to us, while also showing loving concern for the good of our fellow earth-dwellers every-where! May the Holy Spirit enlighten our minds and strengthen our wills, so that our everyday choices and lifestyle pat-

terns may be in harmony with whatever God most desires of us. Have a great week! —Fr. Ken

“...There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is

accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on

the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division...”
