Karara 18th/19th June 201612th Sunday in Ordinary Time

CARE FOR THE HOMELESS, THE SICK, THE PRISONER, AND THE

    DEAD

This work of mercy also moves us to support refugees throughout the

world, especially those displaced by war and famine. And in poor nationswhere inadequate economic development has occurred, this work of mercy

moves us to support programs to help build homes. Likewise, we are also

called by this work of mercy to tend to those who have simply run away

from terrible situations in their homes, including violence and abuse.

Many older people feel they are truly without a home any longer because

they have had to give up their homes and move into institutions. Most

nursing facilities never become true homes, and life in them can be lonely

and difficult. Whats more, these virtually homeless older people live very

near us all, in institutions tucked into many of our neighbourhoods and

parishes. And for those older people who live in their own homes, this

work of mercy calls on us to support them. It moves us to visit them, bring

    them meals, help them

    with housework, repair

    what needs to be fixed,

    and help them know

    theyre still a vital part

    of our community.

    REFLECTION

Lukes Gospel is divided into two sections by the momentousdecision to embark on a journey to Jerusalem, there to under-go the suffering and death which were to greet Jesus. Todaysgospel text comes just before this decision is made. It ischaracterised by another journey, a faith journey by thedisciples. They must come to understand exactly who Jesusis: the Christ of God, and to understand what sort of Christ heis-one who will undergo suffering, rejection and death inorder to be raised up again. Jesus takes this lesson further byexplaining that if any wish to follow him, they too mustrenounce the life of the world and take up the cross. It is onlyin so doing that a person can truly save his/her life. Just asJesus takes on this suffering for others, a true disciple mustlive for others and not for self. Only then will he/she be trulysaved.

What do you need to renounce in order to save your life?

Is there a cross which you carry every day?
