T e Yorke amily had been happy in theiraple Ridge home.T ey loved the neighbourhood and espe cially,ir neighbours. T eir two teenagers were doing

well in school and their riends were nearby.T e only proble m was that their children were

not toddlers anymore and the amily room/kitchen area just wasnt conf gured right or theteens and their riends to hang out, which wasimportant to the amily. T e outdoor space othe amily/great room, though not a big space, also needed an overhaul.

Susan Yorke, a hands-on mom who makes allvisitors eel extremely welcome, says it was an

easy decision to renovate, a er the amily lookedat all options.

My husband and I want our kids and theirriends to eel welcome here, but we elt we hadoutgrown the house, she says.

We looked at other homes in Maple Ridgebut keep coming back to the realization we justdidnt want to leave this home and neighbours

Foodies who enjoy watching V che Jamie

ver pull mouth-watering are rom hisden pizza oven are likely green with envy.ey may even dream o entertaining riendsd amily around their own outside din-g table, especially with the latest delectableation rom a new backyard oven.

Well, the MacEwens did just that.On a trip to Italy, the MacEwen amilyperienced ood served directly rom an out-or traditional brick oven and they were m that moment smitten, and determinedcreate the same on their property at homeSouth Surrey. As luck would have it, the MacEwens wereving renovation work done on their homeat included a large outdoor space.is huge covered area, purposelyilt or relaxing at the end o busyrk days, was a perect spot to

d a f replace to take the nip out

cool evenings and poss ibly, theeamed-o pizza oven.Bill MacEwen mentioned the pizzaen to Bill Farrand, who was alreadyrking on some indoor stone work or renovation.

As luck would have it, (Bill) Farrand wasalso scheduled to take a trip to Italy and

decided he would do some research onauthentic brick ovens while enjoying

uscany, MacEwn says. And magic was born.Farrand, a business owner, artist

and bricklayer who specializes inmasonry, says it was important or

him to build an authentic-lookingItalian outdoor oven and not a mod-

ern interpretation.I designed both the outdoor oven and the

f replace, (but) not to match perectly ; eachshould have a personality, but belong to-gether, Farrand says. T is was my f rst pizzaoven, he says, but notes he has built outdoorovens beore, but never using bought inter-nal components o a pizza oven, which arequite di erent (than products available here).

Judging rom how happy the MacEwenamily is, the pizza oven is a great success.

We are so thrilled with the oven, MacE-wen says. Were seriously considering puttingone at the cottage.

T e story doesnt stop there, however.

Farrand, totally intrigued by his experiencebuilding the MacEwens pizza oven, starteddoing research on f rms in Italy that manuac-ture the internal working parts o ovens.

I went back to Italy, visited a actory, andam now bringing in a container load, Farrandsays, and adds the experience inspired him tostart a new branch o his business that ocusessolely on outdoor ovens.

For people thinking o building an out-door kitchen with a barbecue, etc., an outdooroven is a wonderul addition, Farrand says.

T ey are not just or pizza. You can bakebread, roast bee, chicken or f sh, and veg-etables are wonderul roasted. It opens up a

whole new cooking experience.Farrands new company, A aste o uscany,

will sell the components or clients who wish tobuild their own oven and will also design andbuild ovens or clients who want his expertise.

    Move over, Jamie Oliver.

    We are so

    hrilled with

    he oven

Bill Farrand with the f nished space and thef rst pizza rom the oven (right). Building anauthentic Italian outdoor oven has inspiredFarrand to expand his business. Martin Knowles photos

House bursting at the seams? Feeling a littleueezed? T inking o creating a mortgage

per? Moving is an option, but what aboutpanding into the attic? An attic conversion, done well, not only has

potential to increase the value o the homet may be a better and cheaper optionn building an addition.

T e f rst thing to do is check with the localunicipal hall to establish i this is even doableder the existing zoning and building codes.Asking a local realtor about the conversionver hurts, either. My House Design/Build eam recently com-ted a abulous attic conversion into a one-

droom, sun-f lled rental suite with an ensuitehroom, a separate powder room or guests

d room or a stacked washer and dryer. T eat room, kitchen, living and dining areas areunder a huge, vaulted skylight that lets ins o natural light.

Most attics eel tight and opening it rightto the top makes all the di erence, says Myuse Design/Build eam managing directoraeme Huguet.T is is a good-sized apartment at 900uare eet, with its own little eight-by-f veet) balcony o the kitchen, he notes.T ere is a lot to love in this conversion.T e kitchen is spacious and open, and theoice o white or the cabinets and the islandds to the eeling o space, as does the choicea light wood oor. T e unexpected stylethe bank o windows adds lots o light buto, adds a great design element. It wouldve been easy to be a bit pedestrian with the

windows but that is not My House Design/Build eams style, and the careul placement owindows creating dual aspects is clever.

Even though this suite is modestly ur-nished and f nished, it is done in the heritagestyle, which f ts into the (Vancouver) Dunbarneighbourhood, Huguet says.

Looking at the f nished exterior o thishome, you cant tell there has been majorinterior renovation. T e exterior is smart and

appropriate to the style o the home.T e big skylight in the attic suite cannot beseen rom the exterior, he adds, so there is nodistraction.

T is attractive, renovated space was previ-ously used or storage and an adult could onlystand up in the middle o the room because othe sloped roo.

T e trusses were removed and the wholeroo was reramed to make it vaulted; while thecity would not allow changes to the roo ine orheight, Huguet explains that by gutting the at-tic and re-raming it, he and his team were ableto get the most volume out o the space.

We basically used every nook and cranny.

T ere is not a piece wasted in that space, Hu-guet says. We were able to build in extra stor-age, up above the master bedroom, bathroomand hallway ... we then installed a pull-downladder so that they can access the area.

He notes the key to the new space is howit was insulated, by using a product calledlcynene insulation, an open-cell spray oaminsulation that allowed them to insulate theactual ceiling.

Normally when you go into an attic, its the oor that is insulated and the ceiling is cold, says Huguet. What this product allows us todo is create a warm-edge ceiling, which means

we could get the vaulted ceiling, but also by us-ing it up in the storage area it creates a warmspace, which makes it more usable.

T e result? A stylish, practical renovation reminiscent o a chic New York lo with itshuge 12x8 skylight that adds value to thehome while stil l f tting into the existing neigh-bourhood.

What more could a homeowner want?

Before and after photos show how anattic can go from drab to fab.

T e staircase, in most homes, isminant. In many cases it is the f rstng people see when you open yournt door. In act, it sets the tone or

hat you expect to see as you venturerther into the home.I that is the case it makes sense,

hen planning a major renovation, toke great care deciding on the sty le,aterials and the quality o construc-

n when it comes to stairs.John Hutton, general manager atestcoast Moulding and Millwork,ys it is vitally important that theircase suit the style o the home. For instance, a large, curvedircase, which is very expensive tooduce, needs to be in a home withairly large entrance hall, he says.

T is style needs the space to be prop-y appreciated.T ere are so many styles to choosem, whether elaborate helix-designirs, straight stairs, curved stairs,

odern, wrought iron or wood.estcoast Moulding and Millwork has

expert stair technicians and cra s-

men who work directly o buildingplans or, can visit a site to take exactmeasurements.

T e company designs every staircaseit produces, and Hutton notes thatclients are involved in the process rightrom the beginning.

T is is important, as the sty le o thestaircase must f t seamlessly into therest o the design, he says.

It is also at this point, i the renova-tion includes other millwork such asmouldings, (where) we tie in this parto the design to the staircase millwork.T e work in the home should owthroughout.

T e best bet is to contract with acompany that specializes in this veryexacting process, rather than perhaps, ordering oak stairs online only toeventually, receive poorly made ply-wood stairs an actual scenario thataired on a popular home renovationV show.

Westcoast not only renders a planview and 3D drawings to make sureeveryone involved is on the samepage, but also, pre-assembles the stairsin their actory to ensure the qualitycontrol is up to their standards andenables an e cient installation.

T is coupling o the latest computerand production technology with theirquality cra smanship ensures the cli-ent receives a product o which theyllbe proud.

T e interior o a local beach-ronthome has been perectly designedto ref ect time and place. Its easy toimagine yoursel going or a walk onthe beach, then coming home to thispeaceul oasis o calm.

O en, beach homes can be jarringi the external and interior designare too heavy or the location. T isis not the place or dark beams andheavy draper y. T e tones used in thisbeach home, whose interiors weredesigned by Good Space Design, blend seamlessly rom the interior tothe outside sand and sur. Sometimesa neutral palette can be f at but here, the designers used di erent texturesin a variety o ways: a basket lledwith spheres, the countertops, art with a subtle addition ocolour and bar stools thatadd a touch o the indus-trial.

Brent Neave, a partner inthe design rm Good Space

Design, is justi ably proudo the work his team did on thisabulous home.

T is space, with the neutral palette, works wonderully or spring and all,Neave says. When the temperaturedips, it is easy to warm up the cush-ions, maybe add a jewel-toned, heavy, textured throw, (or) change the rug ia person wishes and suddenly you stillhave a relaxing space, but with a toucho colour to counter the rainy, greydays o winter.

    Many homeowners decide to

renovate their home and need a totaloverall plan, but because o budgetconstraints, they want to proceedat their own pace. T ey are realistic

about what kind o time they haveavailable or a DIY (do-it-

ho are good riends. T ats when we started

nking in earnest about not changing theuses but changing how we live in this one.Renovating is never an easy process, espe-lly when the kitchen is involved.T e old layout of ered a poor use o space:e kitchen island jutted out rom the kitchenan odd angle, which intruded into the am-room.

T e Yorkes also elt the kitchen was tiredd the replace, located in the corner o theom, again ate up way too much space.A complete overhaul o the backyard waso on the wish list. Gone was the need open space to let little legs run and ridecycles in saety and the Yorkes wanted aown-up space to extend the outdoor enter-ning season. All together, it was a major project thatuld require a great contractor, designer and

b-trade proessionals.T is is where Jim Severinskis company, ontier Homes, stepped in.A Maple Ridge-based builder and renovatorth a superb reputation, Severinski has theded advantage o being local plus a greatam o sub-trade proessionals he hasrked with or years due to their

gh-quality work.Severinksi notes Jerry Poole oscan Homes and interior designerren Campbell o Esprit Dcor were

volved in the Yorke renovation, as wella local cabinetry company.(We) all had a hand in coming up with

drawings or the new kitchen, greatroom and the outside entertaining area,

he says. We had a really good eel or whatthe amily wanted to achieve, so we collabo-rated until we had a plan the amily loved.

Everyone involved really took the time tounderstand how the amily lived in the homeday-to-day, how they used the home and whatthey wanted rom the renovation, Severinskisays.

We love to work this way, with everyoneeeling ree to have input into the project, hesays.

We f nd by tapping into the collectivepertise and vast experience, we end up withuperior product. With a plan in hand, the renovation wasrted. An additional eight eet wasded to the homes great roomd a vaulted ceiling, which madeuge di erence to the eel o theat room, was added.

T e kitchen was totally torn out, theeplace removed rom its corner spot andat was once a large window was changed torench door to match the existing door on same wall.

T e f replace was moved to a much morerkable spot between the French doors and

signed without the deep hearth, whichared more oor space.T e new kitchen is a dream and Campbelles it.

T e combination o antique cream cabi-ts above and dark cabinets below makes aat look all-dark cabinets coupled withdark oor would have been much too

avy, she says.T e newly positioned island with itsavy granite edge is abulous and makesuch more sense then its old spot. T e glasscksplash wonderully complements the restthe kitchen.Campbell came up with the idea to marry erent wood oors at the transition. Sheed the width o the doorway rom the

great room to the hallway with slate to avoidan awkward merging o the di erent woodcolours ; in this case, the oors were not thatar apart colour-wise, but Campbells ideawas brilliant and lent another element to theoverall design.

Outside, the outdoor entertaining area waschanged to a much larger ootprint o 20 eet a er checking with municipal regulationsand rules but workers had to go down nineeet to native soil to meet code, Severinskinotes.

T is area was originally built on f ll, so toget a solid ooting and put in proper drainagewe had a big dig on our hands, he says.

Now, with the French doors open to thedeck, it makes the ow rom the inside to theoutside area seamless and the amily gets a loto use rom the space.

An added element is that thekitchen window over the sinkis now removable, so it serves asa pass-through during summerweather, he adds.

From beginning to end the whole projecttook three months which, considering thework that went into the renovation, is excel-lent.

And its def nitely a success.T e renovation has made all the di erence

to the amily, Yorke says.It totally works or what we wanted.T ey hosted Christmas dinner or their ex-

tended amily and the newly renovated spaceworked like a dream.

Which is just what they wanted: a welcom-ing home or everyone to enjoy.
