CARETAKER 'S HOUSE
AT
CHELSTON
Many
church buildings, including
ours, are
subject to occasional
nighttime
visitors in
Zambia thesedays.
Rarely
a day goes by that we do
not hear
from
missiona ry f riends about a
particular
chu rch bui ld ing
being
broken into,
vandalized
and
many
things stolen. The toilets are
a favorite target.
Thestolen bathroom
fixtures are
promptly sold on th e b la ck market
to
us e in the
construction
of
new
houses.
Roofing sheets
and
electrical equipment are also taken regularly. We,
at Chelston, have had four or five
attempts
in th e
past months . On one o ccas io n we los t a
washbasin
plus
the
faucet and drain pipe all very hard to find
and very expensive to replace). A good quality
padlock was broken
to
gain
entry.
Another
occasion found the
lock
broken
on
the outside fuse
box
with
the lighting
arrester
and main circuit
breaker
stolen.
Another t ime they tried
to
enter
one
of
the toilets
but
failed
d ue to
a new, break-
proof padlock and the doubleskinned steel door
(which
was damaged
extensively but
held ) Al l

someone to live in
and
watch over th e property.
The
first
day
that cement blocks had been laid which
included installing a steel
door
and
door
frame,
thieves
came that
very
night hoping to steal the new door.
Fortunately
the
guard
was
awake,
blew his whistle
and
scared the visitors away. That saved about
1100 Kwacha (almost a
year's
salary for the
guard).
This little house has two small rooms and two small
windows. We
pray
that
the
Lord's property
at
Chelston
will be
secure
now.
LOSS
AND DAMAGE AT OUR HOUSE
Speaking of thieves we had an incident recently at our house. Mart and
Andrew had
lef t to attend the
worship service
atone
of the churches in Lusaka,
and
I
had
left to attend prayers
at
the West Sidechurch in
Kafue.
The thieves knew just when to strike (while we were
away
on Sunday
morning).
They loosened
th e
barbed wire and chipped off the broken
glass from
the top of ou r wall fence to gain entry. They had about
one
and one-half hours to do their dirty work. They tore up our wooden backdoor only to find a 16mm steel bar gate
on
the
inside.
With
the
use
of a
large
pick
they
were able
to
break
one padlock
but
no t the
other
one
which
isof
the
breakproof
variety. Frustrated,
they
then
broke
windows and tore screens to reach
through our
burglar bars for
anything
they could grasp or pull to the window. Andrew lost many of his nice things and I
lost some
expensive
items off of my desk in my office. We are
thankful
that
they
did notgainentry to
our
house
bu t
they did take items valued
at
over 500 and the
damage
was
at
least another 500.1 am busy now repairing
all of the damage. We have shifted the
working
hours ofouremployees so that someone ison the property
at
all
t im s
now.
TOGETHER
AGAIN
Susan arrived home
from
Kenya fo r her spring
break
from
boarding
school a week
and
a
half
ago.
She still has
three
weeks with us
and
we r all
savoring every minute together
This wil l be he r
last visit
home
since she
will
graduate
f rom high
school in
Kenya
on the 18th of July, 1987. Rift
Valley
Academy is seeing its t hird Baumann
graduate
from
high school there.
Boarding schools
are always a compromise up to a
point,
but
R.V.A.
has
been
a
blessing
to many
missionary
families in
t he Th ir d World fo r
many yea rs .
NEW TOILETS
AT
MUNGU
We
were abl e to construct
toilets at th e
Mungu
church
r ecen tly. The
congregat ion had wait ed
patiently since 1982 to
have
these new toilets.
Next
we hope to build an outside grass-roofed, open-air
classroom.
This
week
we
plan
to
distribute
free
food to eleven
hungry families
in
the Mungu
area.
We will give out 600 pounds of mealie meal
and
a
small quantity of salt. This year Zambia is going to
harvest a
very small maize
crop (due to
th e
lack of
rain) which means
thousands will go hungry
and
many
wil l die .

As
I

of

a nd t ha t fact
is
this:
Zambia

However,
I do look

Meeting new

is always an
exciting

getting

I know tha t Zambia

that has planted
my

hero. What little Zambia
does
have, I
am
a
part
of.
Al l
of

I am
glad
that
Zambia
has accepted me for who I am,
just as I have accepted Zambia. Thank you, Jesus, for

Just
recently wehad some thieves. They stole my bike,my Walkman,
my binoculars, my radio, my watch and my video game. They got into a walled area where our dogs
couldn't get to them. I have been trying to find my bike but I haven't succeeded yet. The way the
thieves got in was they came over our tall wall. Then the way they got outwas from the gate because
we accidently
forgot
to take t he gat e
key with
us.
