Onderwijsateliers opruimenDe onderwijsateliers moeten weer worden opgeruimd! Het gaat daarbij om de tafels 1 t/m 78. Het is van belang dat alle studenten en docenten hun spullen uit de ateliers weghalen voor 13 april 16.00 uur, want daarna zal alles worden weg-gegooid. In de week ervoor zullen er extra vuilnisbakken in het gebouw aanwezig zijn. Wij willen u vragen hier volop gebruik van te maken!

MinorvoorlichtingOp dinsdag 26 mei vindt er voorlichting plaats over de minors die worden aangeboden door de TU Delft. Van 12.45 tot 13.45 vinden de facultaire minorvoorlichtingen plaats. Over elke minor wordt drie keer een presentatie van 10 minuten gegeven. Je hebt tijd om drie presentaties bij te wonen. Daarna is er van 14.00 tot 17.30 nog een centrale minorvoorlichting in de Aula. Op de informatiemarkt is er gelegenheid om docenten en oud-studenten te spreken over alle TU Delft minoren. Inschrijven start op 2 mei 2011 om 12:00 en vol=vol! BK CITY — Vrijdag 18 maart werd, samen met het Stylos initiatief BED (Bouwkunde Educa-tion & Design), een korte rondleiding gehou-den in het open depot. Voor de zomer van 2011 staat een tentoonstelling in het Stedelijk Museum te Kampen in de steigers. Dit zijn de eerste stappen om de stoelencollectie een actievere rol op de faculteit te geven. In de komende maand zijn, in samenwerking met Stylos, nog andere activiteiten rondom de stoelencollectie gepland op Bouwkunde. Eind april komt er een symposium gevolgd door een workshop. Deze zijn voornamelijk gericht op studenten, om verdieping en verbreding op het Bouwkunde onderwijs aan te bieden. Ook studenten van buiten Bouwkunde, en andere geïnteresseerden zijn welkom.

De stoel leent zich bij uitstek om te reflecteren op het ontwerp proces. Vanwege het hand-zame formaat, vormt de stoel een prachtig object om ontwerp vaardigheden te ontwikke-len. Aspecten als comfort, schoonheid en de techniek van het maken spelen allemaal een rol bij het ontwerpen van een stoel. Maar ook ervaren ontwerpers blijven geboeid door de stoel. In de loop van de twintigste eeuw

waagden vele bekende architecten, zoals Le Corbusier, Aalto, Berlage, Eames en Oud, zich aan het ontwerpen van stoelen. En hoewel de functie van een stoel onveranderd blijft, blijft de stoel ook nu nog mensen vanuit veel verschillende beroepsachtergronden inspire-ren en uitdagen. Tijdens dit symposium hopen we verschillende visies op de ontwerp vraagstukken rondom de stoel bij elkaar te brengen.

Drie specifieke stoelen uit de collectie zullen worden gebruikt als katalysator van de discussie. Een elementaire Afrikaanse kruk, een technologisch vernieuwende fauteuil van Alvar Aalto en de Mondial stoel van Wim en Gerrit Rietveld vertegenwoordigen zeer uiteenlopende benaderingen van schoonheid, comfort en constructie. In samenwerking met Stichting Zetel zijn vier ontwerpers met verschillende achtergronden geselecteerd. Wij hebben hen gevraagd om een stoel van eigen ontwerp mee te brengen en deze te bespreken in relatie tot de drie tentoongestelde stoelen. Hierna krijgen zowel de sprekers als het publiek de gelegenheid om op elkaar te reageren. Meteen de volgende dag wordt in samenwer-king met Vormstudie een workshop georgani-seerd, waarin gewerkt kan worden aan een eigen ontwerp. Hierbij kunnen nieuwe inzichten in het benaderen van een dergelijke ontwerpopgave direct worden toegepast en getoetst.

Het symposium zal plaatsvinden op 28 april, 17-20 u, de locatie volgt later. De workshop is op 29 april, intekenen hiervoor kan bij Stylos.

Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart

BK CITY — Vincent Gruis’ career at the TU Delft, where his education started, has now evolved to a professorship at the Faculty of Architecture. After his graduation at Real Estate & Housing, he was conferred a PhD by the TU Delft in 2001. His dissertation was about the Finan-cial-Economic Fundamentals of Housing Associations. Currently Gruis also works as a lecturer at the Hogeschool Utrecht. Next to

this he is a commissioner with two housing assocations and he is a member of the board of the Association of Real Estate Researchers in the Netherlands.His chair of Housing Management in Delft will focus on how housing administrators and developers can adjust their stock and activities to societal demands. This question is of increasing importance now that managing the housing stock has become a

BK CITY — Michael Braungart is one of the men behind the well-known Cradle to Cradle (C2C) concept. The concept made a large impact in the Netherlands thanks to his book ‘Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the things we make’ and two documentaries on C2C at the Dutch national television by the VPRO program-me Tegenlicht. The book, written together with his companion the American architect William McDonough, is a manifesto calling for the transformation of human industry through ecologically intelligent design. Braungart states that humans can have a positive ecological footprint by redesigning industrial production processes. By now more and more companies have partially or fully adopted the Cradle to Cradle method to modify their products

Eind maart hebben de bestuurders van de TU Delft en de gemeente Delft hun gezamenlijke visie op de ontwikkeling van TIC-Delft gepresenteerd. TIC staat voor Technisch Innovatieve Campus en omvat heel Delft-Zuidoost: de TU-campus, de Schieoevers, Technopolis, maar ook de ‘oude’ TU-campus met de gebouwen aan de Mijnbouw-straat, Gele Scheikunde en het voormalige hoofdgebouw, nu ons gebouw BK City.

Ons gebouw is – om met Aldo van Eyck te spreken – een kleine stad, maar bij de naam BK City denk ik altijd aan de locatie. We zitten nu op een stedelijke plek: dichter bij het station en dichter bij de voorzieningen van de oude binnenstad.

In het TIC-Masterplan wordt ingezet op de verstedelijking van de hele campus. Aanslui-tend bij de nieuwbouw van de Haagse Hogeschool en inmiddels, meer dan 1200 studentenwoningen bieden de oude en de nieuwe campus in de komende decennia plek voor veel meer stedelijk programma. Daarbij gaat het allereerst om bedrijven en instellingen die passen in het TIC-concept: creatieve bedrijvigheid, starters, verwante technologiebedrijven en misschien wel een grote klapper uit de lifescience-, ict- of watersector.

Verstedelijking betekent mijns inziens echter ook scholen, een zwembad, een mooie wandeling langs de Schie, woningbouw, parken, een evenemententerrein, horeca én niet in het minst: betere verbindingen.

Het TIC-Masterplan voorziet in nieuwe bruggen over de Schie, naar Station Delft-Zuid en de Voorhof. Het blijkt echter lastig om de verbindingen met de binnenstad structureel te verbeteren. De Hambrug ligt op de verkeerde plek en de Sebastiaansbrug vormt een vreselijke barrière. Gelukkig moet die laatste vernieuwd worden voor er een tram overheen kan. Wat is er logischer om er dan meteen een lage brug van te maken of een combinatie van een hoge brug voor trams en bussen en een lage voor het overige verkeer? Dan loop en fiets je vanuit de binnenstad zo bij Bouwkunde naar binnen – BK City.

Zou de provincie overtuigd kunnen worden met vijfhonderd ontwerpen van studenten in de Bsc 4?

Braungart for quite some time. He has a lot of knowledge and he has an enormous network, both are of great importance for the univer-sity. This could also give new opportunities for the research at Building Technology”. Prof.Ir. Luscuere, who will be the chairman of the welcome sympo-sium, explaines that Braungart actually is already quite a lot in the Netherlands, since this is one of the pioneering and leading countries of the world in terms of C2C principles. So let’s hope Braungart will have the time to give some really inspiring lectures the next years. He certainly will do so Friday afternoon April 15th.

Once he was a Greenpeace activist, but currently he is a professor of Process Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Suderburg, Germany. And he is the founder of EPEA International Umweltforschung GmbH in Hamburg. In 2009 a collaboration of companies and governmental agencies: ‘Rotter-dam Sustainability Initiative’ established a C2C chair at the Erasmus University in Rotterdam established which was manned by Michael Braungart. This chair was installed at the Dutch Research Institute for Transitions (DRIFT), titled: 'Cradle to cradle in relation to sustainable system innovations and transitions in theory and in practice'. And now Braungart will become officially associated with the Faculty of Architecture in Delft as well.

Peter Luscuere, professor of Building Services at the depart-ment of Building Technology, is very exited to welcome Braungart as a visiting professor at the TU Delft. “I already know professor

larger share of the building assignment. It will be a real challenge for housing associa-tions, developers, investors and governments to deal with the current scarcity of resources. This is why his chair has started a research line ‘Social Enterprise in Housing Management’ on these issues.

BK CITY – At the beginning of the semester, each of the students of Explore Lab 12 were asked to illustrate what each of their fascinations in architecture is, a task that produced a vast array of theoretical modes such as idealism, surrealism and image. Through a process of grouping together similar fascinations one group of six students evolved under the title of utopia. In order to explore these fascinations further, the group decided to create a series of movies that addressed each of their individual fascinations.

As a methodology for research, the student’s aim is to create an informal discussion after the viewing of each movie. In these discussions questions are raised regarding the movie and its underlying themes in order to critique and enhance the dialogue between these themes and the student’s research. The first two movies of the series, ‘A Clockwork Orange’ and ‘The Dream of Piranesi’ have already been shown but there are still four more feature lengths to enjoy. Here is a small summary of what is to come.

AMSTERDAM – The Atlas is a collection of over 500 maps and diagrams that seek to quantify the spatial realities and fluctuati-ons of the conflict between Israel and Palestine over the last one hundred years. The books development began in 2001, while its author Malkit Shoshan was still an architecture student in Israel. Confronted with realities of the conflict between the two nations, Shoshan found it a necessity to understand the process and events that led to the formation of Israel, by no means a simple task. Collecting data alone was a vast challenge due to the intricate nature of the conflict and deciphering between apparent data and actual data. Combined with this, as a young Israeli, Shoshan was potentially exposing information that her direct surrounding environment would not want to see or acknowledge, a frame of mind that she described as: ‘our systematic role in the con-flict’.

In creating the Atlas, Shoshan was not simply trying to tell the story of the conflict and structure it into a book, but was striving to visualise it in a coherent manner,

as the content of the book and the design are one entity. In the jury’s report at the award ceremony they commented that “the Israel-Palestine conflict is a highly complex issue and to create an atlas based on it is to make a statement. Its ingenious design in the form of a pocket atlas brings structure and light to the chaos”.

Shoshan is currently enrolled as a PhD candidate at the chair of Urban Planning, where she is developing her dissertation with Design as Politics Professor Wouter Vanstiphout. The theme of her dissertation is closely related to the book in terms of a methodology and the direct connection between planning and the state. Combined with this, Shoshan is continuing to develop various other projects with her own organisation in Amsterdam, FAST, examining similar situation in countries such as Iraq and Afghanistan. (SS)

Het architectenbureau XML Architecten is in 2008 opgericht door David Mulder en Max Cohen de Lara. Beiden hebben Bouwkunde in Delft gestudeerd. Het jonge bureau heeft al een aantal werken, tentoonstellingen en prijzen op haar naam staan, waaronder een eerste prijs in de prijsvraag voor jonge architecten Europan 9 en Europan 10. Op Bouwkunde is het bureau eerder actief geweest voor de onderwijsprojecten NL House en #Twitterhouse.x-m-l.org

ARCHITECTUUR VAN DE POLITIEK

De huidige plenaire zaal, in gebruik genomen in 1992, is volgens Pechtold zodanig ontworpen dat de politici goed in beeld te brengen zijn op televisie, wat volgens hem in lijn lag met de toen sterke opkomst van dit medium in de plenaire zaal. Op de website van de Tweede Kamer valt te lezen dat architect Pi de Bruin de huidige zaal opvatte als Romeins amfitheater, waarbij de kleuren corresponderen met het Nederlandse landschap (grappig detail: de zetels moesten de vorm hebben van een tulp). Deze plenaire zaal is volgens de voorman van D66 niet bevorderlijk voor een levendig debat: “Oud D66 voorzitter Hans van Mierlo zei over de oude plenaire zaal dat er de ‘geur van wilde beesten’ hing. Hier ruik ik niets,” aldus Pechtold in Zomergasten.

David Mulder en Max Cohen de Lara van het architectenbureau XML, die met hun bureau onderzoek deden naar de configu-ratie van parlementen, hebben mede naar aanleiding van de uitzending de faculteit Bouwkun-de benaderd. Vanuit een gastdo-centschap wilde het bureau met studenten onderzoek doen, waarbij ook een herontwerp voor de plenaire zaal van de Tweede Kamer gemaakt moest worden. XML Architecten: “Dit onderwijs-project staat in het kader van een onderzoek dat wij hebben opgezet naar ruimten waar (democratische) collectieven gezamenlijke beslissingen nemen. Daarbij valt te denken aan parlementen maar ook aan gemeentehuizen en boardrooms.” Het gaat er volgens XML niet om dat de huidige zaal slecht is of

andere zalen beter. “Architectuur is meer dan puur vorm. Wij vinden het vooral interessant hoe architectuur bepaalde manieren van (samen)leven organiseert. De onderlinge afstand tussen politici en de configuratie van zo’n ruimte is bijvoorbeeld bepalend voor het debat: het maakt nogal wat uit of je één, vijf of tien meter van elkaar af zit. Er wordt vaak gerefereerd aan het Engelse lagerhuis bij parlementaire gebouwen. Winston Churchill heeft die zaal expres te klein laten bouwen, zodat er een leven-dig debat mogelijk werd. Over een ruimte die zo fundamenteel is voor onze samenleving zou een continue discussie gevoerd moeten worden. Is zo’n ruimte nog geschikt voor het type debat dat we voeren?”

In het onderwijsproject heeft het bureau de eerste acht weken met de studenten volgens een lijst van vaste criteria onderzoek gedaan naar bestaande parle-mentsgebouwen. Daarna volgde acht weken waarin een nieuwe plenaire zaal van de Tweede Kamer werd ontworpen. XML: “We hebben wel contact opgeno-men met Alexander Pechtold om advies in te winnen, maar de opdracht komt, inhoudelijk gezien, geheel bij ons vandaan. We vinden het erg leuk om samen met studenten iets uit te zoeken wat we zelf ook nog niet weten. Voor nu is dit onderwijs-project op Bouwkunde echter eenmalig. Nu het onderwijspro-ject is afgerond, gaan we het onderzoek zelf voortzetten.”

De expositie in de Statenpassage van de Tweede Kamer, die op woensdag 9 maart geopend is door Kamervoorzitter Gerdi Verbeet, is toegankelijk na een rondje langs de beveiliging. Compleet met metaaldetector en draaideuren van gehard glas. De expositie bestaat uit de maquet-tes van de herontwerpen naast een maquette van de huidige plenaire zaal. Tegenover de maquettes is een wand opgesteld waarop het onderzoek is gepre-senteerd dat de studenten hebben uitgevoerd. Het project is ook uitvoerig in de landelijke media behandeld: onder andere BNR Nieuwsradio, De Volkskrant en Architectuur.org hebben er aandacht aan besteed.

“Het was een hele boeiende opdracht,” zegt Roxsen Schwen-gle, een van de studenten. “De meesten van ons hebben een zaal willen ontwerpen waarin het debat centraal staat, anders dan de huidige zaal, die inderdaad vooral afgestemd lijkt te zijn op hoe het eruit ziet op TV.” Schwen-gle heeft het uitgangspunt ‘het debat centraal’ letterlijk geno-

De expositie ‘Theaters van Democratie’ blijft t/m donderdag 28 april in de Statenpassage van de Tweede Kamer: Lange Poten 4, Den Haag. Op bk.tudelft.nl is een verzameling te vinden van de verschil-lende media waarin het project is verschenen, kijk daarvoor bij het kopje ‘Studenten TU Delft ontwerpen inspirerende Tweede Kamer’.

men: “In mijn ontwerp heb ik de cirkel gebruikt als ultieme vorm voor een gelijkwaardig debat. In het midden van de zaal is een ronde vergadertafel gesitueerd. Je kan het kampvuur als metafoor nemen: een vurig debat dat essentieel is voor de democratie.”

Andere ontwerpen hebben de ple-naire zaal opgevat als theater (Petty Tang), nemen de dubbel-zinnigheid tussen formeel en informeel overleg als uitgangst-punt (Bas Barendse) of vatten het politiek debat op als Big-Brother-huis (Milan Bergh). Willem Middeldorp heeft een sterk onderscheid gemaakt tussen ‘insiders’ (politici, hun medewer-kers en journalisten) en ‘outsi-ders’ (publiek, passanten op straat) en heeft deze twee typen

gebruikers willen koppelen: “Met mijn ontwerp wilde ik de politiek toegankelijker maken voor het publiek. Bij het analyseren van bestaande parlementsgebouwen kwam naar voren dat de meeste van deze gebouwen vrij gesloten zijn, waarbij een hoge drempel wordt opgeworpen als je het debat wilt zien. Ik wilde meer transparantie en duidelijkheid aan het debat verlenen, zowel in de media als in het gebouw. Dit is gedaan door de coalitie tegenover de oppositie op te stellen en de vergaderzaal vanaf de straat zichtbaar te maken”, aldus Middeldorp.

Alexander Pechtold was aanwe-zig bij de presentatie van het project, evenals GroenLinks Kamerlid Tofik Dibi. Schwengle:

“Dat was erg gaaf. Je krijgt veel feedback van de mensen om je heen. Het was een intensief project, maar je krijgt er veel voor terug. En dat onze projecten nu zijn tentoongesteld in de Tweede Kamer is natuurlijk erg stoer.” Het debat over een echte nieuwe plenaire zaal is hiermee uiteraard nog niet afgerond. Zoals Pechtold al zei in de uitzending van Zomergasten: “Het debat over de huidige zaal heeft zo’n dertig jaar geduurd, dus we zijn er nog niet klaar mee.”

WHAT DO DICK VAN GAMEREN, ERIC LUITEN, ROB KRIER AND HERMAN HERTZBERGER HAVE IN COMMON? THEY ARE ALL PROFESSORS WHOM THE STYLOS MASTERCLASS COMIMITTEE ’BORROWED’ FOR A DAY IN ORDER TO GIVE A SHORT, YET INTENSIVE DESIGN LESSON FOR A SMALL GROUP OF STUDENTS.

BK CITY – The first masterclass took place in December 2009 and featured professor Dick van Gameren. Now, almost one and a half year later, the time has come to reflect on the quite successful series. Heini Wanders, a member of the Stylos board who is currently also in the Masterclass Committee and Milou Joosten, a past member of the Committee who helped organize the second and third masterclass talked to B Nieuws about their past experien-ces and the future plans of the Committee.

“The masterclasses are really focused on the professor that teaches them,” says Wanders about the content of each individual class. Each workshop has a unique character and assignment, ranging from a dwelling (Van Gameren), to a small public plaza (Luiten), from an interior (Hertzberger) to a series of urban spaces (Krier). “The professors were all very closely involved with the assign-ments. They were very enthusias-tic to ‘do their own thing’ and this really makes for the best work-shops.” And though Building Technology has not been a subject of a masterclass just yet, the committee is striving to bring this to the students, but the plans are still secret for now.

Joosten: “The third masterclass [Rob Krier] was the most challen-ging to organize. It took us a year to arrange everything, and we ended up making it a two-day

event, with a mini symposium on the first day and the actual workshop on the second.” The other three masterclasses spanned just a day, with a very short lecture in the morning and the workshop until late afternoon. In an unrelated meeting Herman Hertzberger (like all the participa-ting professors, by the way) remarked that he really liked the idea of the masterclass but felt that it was perhaps just a bit too short. “We found that the one-day masterclass might be a better format. You take up a professor’s time for a whole day, and asking for two days of their time is just too much. We really aim for a long day, beginning early in the morning and finishing not before seven o’clock.” says Wanders. “In addition, working on a small project in such a short amount of time and without a computer forces people to make quick

design decisions”, Joosten concludes. In short, a very different way of designing than in a studio, where such decisions may take days or weeks.

“In the future we would like to organize masterclasses more frequently, about ten or so in a year. We are now trying to put together a preliminary program-me and we will further investi-gate whether this would be possible”, says Wanders. The fact remains that masterclasses are increasingly popular. The first two workshops were filled quickly and more recently, both the Rob Krier and the Herman Hertzberger masterclasses were sold out within three days. The reason for this is that in order to receive the necessary amount of guidance from the professors, only twenty people can participate each time. In order to choose the partici-

pants, the Committee requires all the potential participants to write a letter of motivation. “We want to make sure that students are really interested and already have some knowledge about the professors’ field of expertise and don’t just sign up for the sake of being in a masterclass”, Wanders concludes.

If the ambitious plans of the Masterclass Committee can be made reality, spending a day with one’s favourite professor might prove more within many a student’s reach.

The graduation studio of Interiors, Buildings and Cities asks to redesign the Flemish Cultural Institute, de Brakke Grond, in Amsterdam. This architectural proposal seeks its visibility and embeddedness in relation to the local context, within the notion of the silhouette. In my investigation I have stretched the graphic meaning of the silhouette. From its original sense, the silhouette describes the sight or representation of a person, object or scene that is backlit, and appears against a lighter background.

A tall building will affect the silhouette of the city. Since the context is considered a heritage (i.e. protected) and an increase of the average building height is rather exceptional (i.e. contested), closer investigation into the urban and architectural implications is essential. How can a contemporary building proposal for De Brakke Grond distinguish itself in the cityscape, as a relatively taller building, and at the same time become embedded in the city’s fabric? Reflection on today’s scenery has given me answers to this apparent paradoxical question.

The urban forms derived from silhouettes on the scale of the urban grain, the cityscape, the street, the single building and the interior are captured in this building design proposal for De Brakke Grond. On the level of the urban grain smaller and larger elements, which has been caused by the existence of former convents, are translated into the design. The plot appears to be exactly at a line of demarcation of larger, southern cityblock elements, and smaller, northern housing grains.

The stacking of smaller fragments on top of larger ones gives the building an appearance that narrows towards the top. This evaporating tendency corresponds to what a large number of single buildings in Amsterdam typically do; a heavy base that granulates in its way up.

The way this tall building dissolves affects its presence in the city’s silhouette. The proposal is inserted; subtle, but distinc-tive. Fixed in the eastern panorama I would like to argue that the building joins in successfully with the other existing urban accents in the silhouette. In fact, the building’s silhouette seems to have created a distinctive and legible ending of the agglo-meration of taller buildings along Damrak, Dam Square and Rokin – the former Amstel river line.

On the smaller scale, that of the surrounding public space, the building mass rhymes with existing lines, angles and shapes, such as goof gutters, angled canal houses, pitched roofs, setbacks. A result is that the building does not overwhelm the square in front of it. Similarly, the public space on the east side of the building is clearly articulated by taking over existing lines.

In the proposal, the interior design of de Brakke Grond reflects upon the continuity of Amsterdam. In the building, you will be reminded repeatedly of where you are. Internally, the exposed and expressive construction, largely based on Gothic principles, gives the interior character and recognition points. The con-sciously designed duality of visual relations with the urban environment and the interior will give the visitor of this house of culture means to orientate and relate to the city.

FSR 2011-2012 wants you!

Heb jij jezelf wel eens afgevraagd wie opkomt voor jouw belangen? Hoe weten de niet-studenten, die het hier op de faculteit voor het zeggen hebben, wat jij precies wil en wat het beste is voor jou als bouwkundestudent? Het is noodzakelijk dat de beleidsma-kers van onze faculteit het leven hier door de ogen van de student zien. Hier komt de FSR in beeld! FSR staat voor Facultaire Studen-ten Raad. De raad bestaat uit negen bouwkundestudenten, die zich inzetten voor het behouden en verbeteren van de kwaliteit van onderwijs en docenten én van het gebouw en zijn voorzienin-gen.

Als FSR hebben wij ons de afgelopen maanden met uiteenlo-pende zaken beziggehouden. Kwalitatief goed onderwijs is voor ons erg belangrijk. Zo kijken wij naar de kwaliteit van docenten en studieprogramma. Maar wij richten ons ook op de weten-schappelijkheid van het onderwijs en de relatie tussen studie en praktijk. Onderwerpen van gesprek zijn op dit moment techniek in de Bachelor en de stageminor. De FSR kijkt kritisch naar de huidige moeizame en ingewikkelde regeltjescultuur. Wij zijn nog altijd met het bestuur in

gesprek over de Harde Knip, de verhoging van de BSA, Numerus Fixus en de verantwoordelijkheid rondom cijferinvoer in Osiris. Sinds enkele maanden zijn de maatregelen om langstuderen tegen te gaan – en boetes van 3000 euro te voorkomen – een van onze belangrijkste gesprekson-derwerpen. Ook het gebouw en zijn voorzieningen ontkomen niet aan onze aandacht. Zo zullen bijvoorbeeld binnenkort magne-trons in het faculteitsgebouw worden geplaatst.Begin dit studiejaar hebben wij samen met Stylos het ideeënbord in de hal geopend. Dus heb jij goede ideeën met betrekking tot het onderwijs of de voorzieningen of zit jij met een serieuze klacht? Laat het ons dan weten of maak er volgend jaar zelf werk van!Besturen betekent vergaderen. Regelmatig vinden er overleggen plaats waarbij de FSR in gesprek gaat met de decaan, de onder-wijsdirectie, de Centrale Studen-tenraad en Stylos. Belangrijker is nog, dat de beleidsmakers altijd openstaan voor een goed overleg. Naast het meedenken en praten over de eerdergenoemde zaken, hebben wij de afgelopen periode ook ons advies gegeven over besluiten, zoals de benoeming van de nieuwe decaan en de opleidingsdirecteur Bachelor, en over de jaarlijkse begroting en het curriculumbesluit.

Omdat we zelf studenten zijn weten wij uit eigen ervaring wat er speelt op Bouwkunde en belangrijker: we zijn aanspreek-punt voor studenten om ervarin-gen uit te wisselen. Elk jaar worden er in mei verkiezingen gehouden, waarbij de leden van de nieuwe faculteitsraad worden gekozen. Iedere bouwkundestu-dent, Bachelor en Master, kan zich verkiesbaar stellen.

Opinion &Truth

“I’m entitled to my opinion.”It’s an argument that is

being used almost on a daily basis. An argument so common and accepted, we take it as a truth and refuse to even think about its consequences. That’s right, a truth. Not the truth, since we live in relativistic times: there is more than one truth. Many people of many different cultures and backgrounds hold different views on what is true and what is false and we are to respect that our opinion, our view, is but one of many.

But are we entitled to our opinion? What if our opinion turns out to be based on false facts, lies or misinterpretations? History has shown many times that even when people are proven wrong, they still hold on to their beliefs. George W. Bush for example, who persisted to invade Iraq, even when the main reason (Saddam’s supposed WMDs) was falsified. The claim to be “entitled to my opinion” then becomes an easy copout, utilized many times by Bush himself.

At this faculty, amongst the plethora of opinions about what architecture, urbanism and planning should entail, the claim that we are ‘entitled’ to our opinion remains a ‘valid’ argument. Yet here at Bouw-kunde, it seems to be indiffer-ence to each other’s position rather than some kind of ethical stance that keeps us from really questioning each other.

Should technology serve architecture or should it be its core concern? Should our cities expand or should we intervene in existing urban fabric? Is architecture a science, an art, or something in between? What should the goals of architecture be in the 21st century? Of course, these general questions are very difficult to answer. And each and every one of us answers these questions differently. But we can’t all be right. Up until some fifty years ago, prevailing theories (Classicism, Arts & Crafts, Modernism etcetera) always provided clear answers to these questions. These answers sometimes proved themselves wrong, but that doesn’t mean that there are no answers. Relativism has, or at least should have, its limits.

So, are we entitled to our opinion? The simple answer is: only when this opinion is based on true, verifiable facts. But that’s too much to ask some-times. Certainly here at Bouwkunde, where the question of ‘truth’ is avoided like the plague. In my opinion.

IN WHAT WAYS, APART FROM STUDYING, ARE YOU INVOLVED AT THE FACULTY?

Gerwin Heidemann, MSc4 Dwelling I’m not really involved. I live in Amsterdam and I came here to do the ’schakelsemester’. So I joined in late. If I’ve been here from the beginning, I would probably have joined a student association or Stylos.

Sjors de Graaf, BSc6 I do some work at the Bouw-pub, pouring the drinks during parties. I became involved through a friend. People come together in the Bouwpub after presentations and socialize. I also helped to make one of the models that are on display in the street. It’s the 1:20 model of the Rietveld House, which was originally made for an exhibition in China.

Anne van der Brand, MSc4 Dwelling I am a member of the ’oplei-dingscommissie’ at the faculty. One of my teachers asked me to do it, and I quite enjoy it. There are six teachers and six students in the committee. We discuss different important issues facing the students, for example the issue of students who take longer to finish their studies.

Louise de Hullu, MSc2 When I began, I joined the First-years Committee at Stylos, we organized a trip to London. After my minor, I was asked to become a student assistant for Interior, so now I help the stu-dents with organizing their gradua-tion and we’re also making a whole book about graduating. Now as a part of our Master 2, we also mentor first-year students. I’m very interested in architecture and I also find it very rewarding to work with people.

Roel van der Klaauw, MSc2 I’m involved with Media Studies and will be giving small drawing lessons at the upcoming open days, which I also did the last time around. I also helped out some of the Media Studies teachers and even taught drawing classes at Aerospace Engineering. I really enjoy drawing. And now, with Master 2, I also help mentor the first years.

Jan Bolhuis, BSc4 I’m not involved at the faculty because I’m an active member at a student association here in Delft. I did join an excursion once, to Berlin, but that was about it. For me it’s more about keeping busy and socializing with others.

Dominique van ’t Hof, MSc4 Dwelling I was the student assistant for the ’schakelsemester’ for two and a half years. I was in that programme myself, and when I finished, I saw they were looking for student assistants. I knew a lot about it and needed a job, so I applied. I got to know a lot of the lecturers and students in the process, even if this wasn’t the primary objective.

Robert van den Brink, BSc2I’m not involved here besides my studies. I’m now focused on passing all my courses and so I didn’t even think about doing a committee or some-thing similar. I did quite a lot of sports before, but now I stopped to focus on school. Maybe I might get involved later if all goes well, but I’m definitely not planning any-thing.
