SASBE2009Conference Smart and Sustainable Built Environments

If you are interested in sustainable planning and design but prefer to stay on the positive side of life, SASBE2009 (TU Aula, 15-19 June) will be the place to be. As much as it is for Ken Yeang, Dirk Sijmons, Michael Braungart, Wubbo Ockels, Sir David King (the ‘British Al Gore’) and Ronald Waterman, who will give keynote lectures, as well as invited contributors such as Winy Maas, Jón Kristinsson, Thomas Rau, Jan Jongert and John Worthington. Crown prince Willem-Alexander intends to open SASBE2009 on Tuesday 16th of June.

Central theme is ‘building smartly in a changing climate’, giving way to proactive solutions for the built environment within the context of climate change and energy depletion. Apart from the big names mentioned above, scientists will present their latest findings from cutting-edge research and there will be a workshop for PhD students. Wubbo Ockels’s Superbus will also be exhibited.

SASBE2009 offers special events for students. The five finalists of the CIB student competition will present and display their ideas, whilst the winner will be announced during the closing session. In preparation of their Sustainablabla symposium, Stylos organises a special student workshop. We arranged a special fee fee for Master and Bachelor students.

What was Indesem 2009 all about?

Indesem (International Design Seminar) was held at the brand new Oostserre from May 7-15. The idea of Indesem is to “create an environment where students and professionals can debate about the position of the ar-chitect”. In this edition ‘Point of View’, Indesem questioned today’s practice of image-architecture. Architecture has become flat, the renders and nice pho-tos are all that matter, one can say.

Indesem 2009 tried to create an aware-ness that besides the visuals, there are a whole lot more of senses that the architect can use in his design. By in-volving all the human senses in a de-sign, a total experience of space can be made. An experience for the user, not just the ones who read the architecture journals.

I was one of the 44 participants in this intensive week of lectures, workshops, design and… fun. With students from Poland, Israel, Italy, Greece, Serbia, United States, Canada, Portugal and Spain, Indesem 2009 formed an inter-national architecture ‘happening’. Here is an overview of what took place dur-ing Indesem 2009.

LecturesThe very first day, Indesem kicked of with lectures from Herman Hertzberger (Herman Hertzberger Architects) and Patrick Healy (professor of Delft School of Design). In his lecture, Hertzberger questioned the audience “What do we miss in ar-chitecture today?”. He observed that contemporary architecture mis-ses expression, the only expres-sion it contains is the ‘wow-effect’. The visual sens-es are very developed, but the other senses like hearing and feeling are lacking in today’s architec-ture. He concluded that “...architects should create the conditions for life, into it’s most less important qualities.” And: “Modern architecture isn’t bad, but we should question what it is missing, to give a more complete architecture in the future.”

Patrick Healy commented on Hertzberger by stat-ing that it is in human nature to have the will to be remembered. The wow-effect is therefore le-gitimate. According to Healy, the problems we see in architecture today is time-bound. He gave the example of gothic and roman architecture. During the gothic period, humans were undernourished and thin. Therefore their architecture was thin too. The Romans were wealthy and fat, therefore their architecture was glorious and proud. This logic makes sense when looking at contemporary culture. Everything has to be fast, on-the-go, su-perficial, so contemporary architecture is too. The visual is the best tool for this kind of architecture.

On Sunday, there was a very inspiring lecture by the Japanese architect and professor Takaharu Tezuka. He was the first to really relate with the Indesem’s theme: the user. Stating that nowadays, architecture’s life is short (in Japan not more than 25 years), the only way for architecture to live longer is to incorporate the user. Tezuka always studies the lifestyle of his clients. Instead of using

plans and computers, he makes models (some-times hundreds) to communicate with his clients. When the model is accepted by the user, the mak-ing of drawings and plans start. The contract between client and architect is set in the latest pos-sible phase, so the time to get to know each other is maximized. His method enables the user to have very specific qualities in his building. For example in his “Roof House” (the kitchen and shower are positioned on top of the roof), the client likes to take ‘a warm shower in a cold typhoon.’ According to Tezuka, the client has to think hard before con-tracting him as architect: ‘one has to think before marrying a building, it is a life-long contract’.

On Monday, the Spanish architect Enrique Ruiz-Geli, (Cloud Nine Architects) gave his vision. He calls his design philosophy “Cloud science”: a cloud is formed out of particles that perform a math-ematical show. There are many particles present in a cloud, but just by the relationships and law of na-ture, an infinite variety of forms are possible within one material. In his designs he tries to incorporate these ‘particles’ into one material: structure, skin, installations are often integrated into one material. For his futuristic designs, he makes use of technol-ogy, machines and computers. “Machines are here to help us’” said Ruiz-Geli during his lecture. Like the clouds that perform a show, so do his designs. The pavilion for the Expo Zaragoza 2008 actually sweats. The façade of the Media-TIC building in Barcelona reacts to sunlight by inflating or deflat-ing the air cushions in the façade. This was just a small part of the lecture program. Other speakers at the Indesem lecture series were: Marc Boumeester (filmmaker and research-er/teacher at Delft School of Design), Roland IJzermans (game developer), Oliver Thill (Atelier Kempe Thill), Dick van Gameren (Dick van Gameren Architects), Winy Maas (MVRDV), Michiel Riedijk (Neutelings Riedijk Architects), Kas Oosterhuis (ONL), Robert Winkel (Mei Architects), Marlies Rohmer (Marlies Rohmer Architects), Mark Linder (professor at Syracuse University School of Architecture) and Wiel Arets (Wiel Arets Architects). The vast amount of lectures in such a short one-week period made it possible for par-ticipants to compare and contrast each position and viewpoint, and to finally come to one’s own position or conclusion. Or as Michiel Riedijk said during his lecture: ‘...to develop your own position and show us we were fools’.

WorkshopsAlmost everyday we had lectures, except on Satur-day. We went to visit Lola Landscape Architects in Rotterdam. It is a firm that is known for their unique approach to design - by means of sound. They gave a workshop in which we had to make a pro-posal for a sound experience in the metro station of Eendrachtsplein, Rotterdam. In this workshop the problem of ‘transparency’ emerged: how can you design a sound experience in which the user knows where the sounds come from? By knowing, the user can relate to the sound. When the user doesn’t know, sounds can have a negative, diso-rienting, and finally an annoying effect. After the workshop we went to the metro at Eendrachtsplein to test the proposed sound experiences. In the af-ternoon we went to the different locations we had to analyse for our design. The assignment was to document our personal senses. Feel, hear, smell,

and see the place. A problem occurred: how do you map feelings, sounds and smell? The partici-pants had to be inventive and to create their own notation. Besides sketching, one had to inhale the smells, feel the materials, one had to really think what the environment was, using all senses.

DesignArmed with new insights encouraged by the inspir-ing lectures, it was time for the participants to start designing on Monday. The mid-term presentation was already the next morning, so the pressure was on. The whole day we discussed, brainstormed, sketched, made proposals, produced a lot of ideas. The Indesem 2009 organizers knew that architec-ture students worldwide have a bad habit of work-ing overnight, so the faculty remained open during the night.

For the mid-term presentation, my group proposed to design a cemetery under the ground. It was an ‘out of the box’- proposal, but during seminars like Indesem, you get the opportunity to think outside of the box. So why not? We came with this idea because the cemetery has specific characteristics that are perfect for the un-derground. Our job was to define the cemetery and the underground. So what does it mean to be underground? It means that you have no horizon, it means you can not position yourself referring to this organizational line. To be underground is to have no walls. A wall implies a boundary, a bound-ary implies an ending and a start. In the under-ground there is no start, there is only an infinite mass of soil. With no sunlight, there is no sense of time, the underground is timeless. To be un-derground is to have no natural light, only artificial light. By defining the underground, we first had to define the above ground. The perception of basic elements like walls, ceiling, floor had to be analysed. Only now, during this seminar, I tried to figure out how these elements are perceived by the user. The next step was to define the cemetery, which was an easier job. The last and most difficult step was to materialize all these ideas into a user-friendly environment, but the underground is user-unfriendly by its nature. A difficult task for us.

On Friday we had to present our designs to the jury composed of Herman Hertzberger, Michiel Riedijk, Deborah Hauptmann, Machiel van Dorst, Robert Nottrot and Jack Breen. Team 9 ‘Architecture beyond vision’ , consisting out of Joris

Hoogeboom (The Netherlands), Drazen Krickovic (The Netherlands), Michal Jurgielewicz (Poland) and Hans Larsson (Sweden), was chosen as the winner of Indesem 2009. The team designed an underground space which was totally dark. For their analysis they blindfolded themselves in the Oostserre and tried to orientate. During this blindfold experiment, Team 9 realised: “A space can all of a sudden become completely alien and frightening when you see nothing. It was a real turning point. We became fascinated with de-signing a space that could be read without being seen.” For their final presentation, they made a film that documented the disorienting experi-ence of being deprived of vision. Besides this, the film showed how a space could be perceived with all the other senses. Team 9 was the just winner, by taking out the visual sense they con-fronted Indesem’s theme head on - the user’s perception, but with all other senses than sight.

As for my group’s design, we were not able to convince the jury of our ‘out-of-the-box’ idea. I was a bit disappointed, but then again, Indesem 2009 is not about the jury’s opinion. It is not about the end result, you don’t get a grade. You don’t have a teacher who is pushing you in certain directions, you really are doing it for yourself. Seminars and workshops like Indesem 2009 are more about the experience, the proc-ess, and very important: just having fun doing architecture.

BreakWorking with architecture students from all over the world was very refreshing and inspiring. Al-though we were in the Oostserre all the time, I felt disconnected from the regular TU Delft life. Indesem 2009 was a nice break from the Archi-tecture curriculum. You meet new people, you have a few things on your mind, you go to café’s during the evenings, and everybody who is par-ticipating has the same state of mind: architecture and having fun.

At lastIndesem 2009 was all about the user. Instead of discussing all the possibilities of flashy, futur-istic, ‘wow-effect’ architecture. Indesem 2009 said: “STOP, let’s go back to basics- let’s go back to the user. And let’s enjoy while thinking about it.” A serious message to all architectec-ture students, combined with a huge fun factor. <b

I found Indesem in last December on the web, while the first winter snow was falling on my gar-den. I found it interesting immediately, because although it took place in Holland, its themes were not typical 'Dutch'. I appreciated the openness and the relationship among students, teachers and pro-fessionals. I experienced a different way of looking at teaching, based on a pact between generations, unlike the Italian system that is so static and slow, perhaps slowed by perennial lack of professional assignments.

Returning to the issues, I think it was very interest-ing to confront the idea put forward by Indesem 09. Perhaps the only presumption was to look for similarities between the admirable intents of the workshop and some prominent personalities of the famous Dutch architectural panorama.

While remaining at the top of the global debate, in Holland architectural climate seems to have the anxiety of finding solutions to problems, trying to proceed trough simplifications and methodologies. Moreover, it seems to reduce the creative process to a mere series of events whose succession is logical, at least according to what some architects say about their work.The workshop attempted to subvert this way of conceiving project, trough a confrontation with us-ers, with reality, including the reality of dreams. In order to understand better these considera-tions, I would advise you to come to Tuscany, to a medieval village, in the shade of poplar trees and surrounded by the scent of junipers, you will be able to notice that in some places there is an im-ponderable magic. In my opinion the intent of the workshop was that of conceiving architecture as an instrument and a container of these emotions.

Some guests and participants’ contributions were particularly illuminating, from the most illustrious names to my roommate, I found answers to my questions. I think you would be interested in the way a foreign student perceives your faculty. It is a highly cultural place, in which I greatly appreci-ated the desire for participation and for academic comparison. In such comfortable environments the risk is to want never leave them behind, perceiving reality only through a constant academic and self-referential filter.

Too many steps….the feeling of relief when I reached the final step on the last floor of my University building and a close encounter with the poster..Indesem. Hmmm… I did not have a clue as to what it could be, yet I took a note of the website out of a mere curiosity. www…. The very explor-ing of the website and the task itself had drawn my interest and got me started. Somehow, the idea came to me. Yet, tomorrow was another day and some new projects had to be submitted and many other things on the agenda...Indesem had to be left waiting. Days were passing by and the idea was lurking in the corner and tortured me... I had to give it a 'birth'. A pen, a paper, a camera, photoshop, coffee.... Red carpet! I had sent my project and forgot about it all, and I felt better. Days were pas-sing by. Lectures, friends, practice, tests, love...PAF!!! Email – the last sentence re-mained in my memory “See you in May!”. I didn’t know how to react, what it meant; surely now I had to go to the Netherlands... I was confused. Delft, OK – I had heard about the University. They said it got burnt down. But I had to go there. Slow-ly, I brought myself round and after a few days I realised what had actually happened. The contacts were exchanged promptly and getting a visa and mapping the itinerary were quickly organised. It was the 6th May. Train, just the train and over 30 hours of train... Delft!

Central train station and Pim. My host. Accom-modation, getting to know the city, the University, the program, the people .... What followed was a unique and unrepeatable and educative expe-rience. It was a mass of knowledge, research, enjoyment, friendship, insomnia, talks, silence, glances, indesems...

The theme of this year’s Indesem was very inter-esting, the space we occupied was inspirational, and the people friendly. The work, no matter how hard, was a pleasure. The lectures and the lectur-ers spread inspiration. And the city... The city was a good host. <b

‘The 6th sense in architecture.’

Open your imagination and try to use the 5 senses. The sound of the trains in the under-ground, of the crazy wind in Delft, of one hun-dred aspirators switched on at the same time.The taste of sandwiches of cheese and ham, of peanuts sauce, of a beer in the afternoon after a hard working day. The smell of a barbecue in the school, of coffee coming out of the coffee ma-chine, of the glue that is still sticky in your hands. The touch of the chalk for blackboards, of the ground heated by the sun and of this ondulated cardboard they sell in the shop of school…

Perceptions in architecture was the main sub-ject of Indesem this year and those are some of my perceptions as participant of the workshop. You used the view for reading it but you felt it with all your senses. In the same way, we focus on our perception of architecture, we use it for designing, for showing and for getting it, but is it the only way? Is the use of this tool a help or a limit to us? If we perceive the reality around us with all our senses, why do we create it with only one sense?

During one whole week we were exploring and training our senses, focusing our work on cre-ating an underground space that could compi-late all our perceptions. Tezuka, Ruiz-Geli, Winy Maas, Wiel Arets, our tutors…people that were helping and motivating us to develop this new fields and to change our views of architecture. The Indesem group was very inspring. Every country, every school, every single participant, had his own learning, opinions and tools, and of course own perceptions on the field we were working in, so sharing it was the most intensive training you could get, every single minute of the 24 hours of the day.

But after a week, training my senses in the per-ception of architecture, there are lots of ques-tions that I couldn’t answer using any of my five senses. Where are the limits between fun and work? Where are the limits between leisure and profession? Where are the limits between en-joying and learning? We don't need to find the answers to these questions to become a good architect. We should just enjoy what we do.

Indesem trained us in using the other five sens-es. I still think though it are too few to make something as complex as architecture. Sure, there must be more than five. The capacity to enjoy, that’s the 6th sense we need to perceive architecture. Let’s keep on training it. <b

The Indesem How did the foreign participants experience the International Design Seminar?

Before I came to Delft I did not know what to expect, I was really curious how the organization, people and my host would be. When I arrived, I was surprised by the manner we were welcomed and hosted. Although I spent little time at the place of my host, he was there for me in every way. Even for my silly reasons and demands. He did so many favors for me that he made my pres-ence in Delft as comfortable as possible.

I was surprised about the international character of the TU Delft student, both in the way of study-ing and working. I am not used to having so many different nationalities around me. I found myself in an academic environment where the conditions and possibilities to improve yourself are present. What happened during Indesem was fully over-whelming. I expected to have great workshops, great lectures, great meetings, great people. Indesem fulfilled my expectations and even went beyond. Now, seated in my home, in Tokyo, I was asking myself, "what did you learn from the workshops Bojan, from the whole seminar, was it worth of the time spent?" Before answering this question I first have to read and use the notes, the publications, the experiences, the knowledge, books and the contacts before telling some-one- ”You know, during Indesem, this is what I achieved and so on..” Once home, I had a full bucket of memories and knowledge. The answer to my question is going to be absolutely positive but, I would like to think about it some more. The most striking about Indesem, for me, was the eagerness and unbelievable will and academic professionalism shown from the organization committee of Indesem. It was striking to see that so much discussion could be evoked in room A. Everything was amazing: the schedule, the tim-ing, the limits, the freedom, the facilities available, the filming and recording of the each non/im-portant moment and performance, the food, the equipment, the atmosphere, the sightseeing, the diversity of the seminars and themes worked on. <b

Every year in June every single student waits for the last ‘school bell’ that sends you off for holidays. Finally you can go rest your body on the beach, get some tan and forget about deadlines and assignments. Lucky you all first, second, third and fourth year students that will do that, get a good rest and return to the faculty in Septem-ber. I think this is the first time in my life I already regret I won’t be back at school in the fall semester before the holidays even started. As a person that just recently heard the long awaited ‘GO’ at my P4 presentation I can tell that I don’t really feel so impatient to finish my career as a student anymore, nor I think I will be able to spend this summer in an unbothered state of mind. I guess I am no exception for all the happy people who were recently celebrating their coming-soon-graduation. Well I bet at least half of us already got out of the positive shock of getting passed and starts to regret to finish their studies now when the school becomes a warm and cosy nest to wait over the crisis. However, it makes me think that this nest has quite some potential to trans-form into an over-too-cosy one crowded with all the people who might freak out to finish and instead will decide to take their time, enjoy some more student life and more lovely holiday opportunities. Look-ing at the current changes in the faculty’s approach towards ‘gezelligheid’ seekers I suppose it might become quite a task to be-come a professional study extender here at BK. But who knows perhaps students and teachers will develop a new kind of symbi-osis based on ‘live and let live’ rule but the university might as well become a desired paradise where everybody will want to stay but not everybody will be allowed to – I won’t know how this will evolve, because I won’t be here anymore, but it seems like it might be an interesting transformation. Whatever it will be...for now, we decided to send you off for holidays with all the good memories of what happened at BK before the time densed up with the exams and final presentations. The rounding up B_Nieuws for this year hopefully will leave you with a positive feeling of workshop-ping at Indesem and Sao Paolo, coming to the Capita Selecta lectures and meeting at the BK City Culture. Some people just like me are also saying goodbye so remember them well after reading this issue. Come back in September and thank God you’re still student! I will go work on my portfolio at the beach and see if my computer can stand the heat.

Seeing all the participants checking in on Thursday 7th of May, indesem ’09 became reality to us and immediately the enthusiasm began. After months of hard work on the prepublication, lec-tures program, promotion, practical arrangements and the workshop as-signments with the eight of us, the large attendance during the opening lecture of Herman Hertzberger made us again realise indesem started.

Choosing the theme ‘sensory perception’, we knew we were taking a risk. Going back and forth be-tween the extremely dissimilar opinions of our ad-visors Machiel van Dorst and Michiel Riedijk, we were forced to make our own decisions. It seemed too difficult and crazy, but our idea was to ap-proach the workshop by first focusing on senses and users before creating spaces.

From the first day of the workshop, it was up to the participants to discover the theme where we had stopped. And they did discover it! Due to the few days the workshop would last, we chose to

prepare three masterclasses; a masterclass ‘sound’ in cooperation with Peter Veenstra (Lola Landscape Architects), a masterclass ‘under-ground’ by Derksen|Windt architects and also a masterclass by Enric Ruiz-Geli (Cloud 9) to inspire the teams in many ways. The midterm presenta-tions showed that the participants started thinking in a different way, as we hoped they would do.

For us as students it was strange to follow and guide the participants’ progress only by talking with the tutors; Theo Deutinger (TD Architects), Simon Droog and Paul de Vries, KOPVOL Architecture and Psychology, Robin Kerssens (QBK Architects), Serge Schoemaker, and Urban Synergy and Vesta Kroese. For the tutors them-selves, there was also this struggle with the theme, but in the end, their enthusiasm was the spring for the variety and creativity of the students’ ideas. Every team was advised by two couples of tutors, working this way, the teams had to create their own point of view, as we did the last months. Eve-ry day the regular had to be done, buy luckily we were helped by friends, roommates, Stylos board members and participants. But in all this sequence, still everything was unexpected. On Sunday a few of us were getting ready to have dinner with Takaharu Tezuka, but when he heard that we ar-ranged a BBQ, he was certain to stay at the faculty

together with the students. After the BBQ he joined us on a student’s bike and once on a ter-race in the city centre, he ordered everything of the menu that students told him was Dutch.

Also Monday started as planned: Enric Ruiz-Geli had to be driven to Delft from the airport. Once on the back seat of our rented car, he decided he wanted to visit many people and projects, but we agreed he would participate as visiting critic that afternoon. While dropping his suitcases in his hotel, he decided to visit the workshop im-mediately. We and the tutors quickly gathered and then prepared the teams for his visit within half an hour. Luckily, due to that he was earlier than we had planned, the teams had more time to discuss his comments before the midterm Tuesday morning.

We are proud that we may say: this indesem edition was one as never before. Although the students and the organisation were exhausted during the week, our greatest satisfaction was the social integration of the participants and the organization. Now the seminar has ended, we are not finished yet! Keep your eyes open for our post-publication where we will reveal the surprising results of the research. We also hope to present the recorded lectures soon. <b

It’s difficult to describe in many lines what’s beyond the image of Indesem; it was an interesting expe-rience in many levels. Especially, because it was an experience of being between different points of view and dealing with people you have just met, trying to communicate and get familiar with them in every aspect of your daily life, being discon-nected for a week from your 'reality' in a way... That experience of trying to find your coordinates in that 'matrix' of options and points of view was more intense by the fact that the theme of that workshop was focusing on the senses of the user

and on the spectrum of the potential subjectivity of every situation generated by a design or by chance sometimes. Delft was also a very different version of studying, compared to Athens reality, in terms of where a university is or should be (or not) in the city and especially a department of architecture, of relationships inside it and its whole spirit, apart from the equipment which can be an utopic joke in other universities. The organisation of the whole workshop was perfect, not only in business matters but as support in a human way. <b

CSI.SP An international workshop of the Parallel Worlds Program

n the beginning of April 2009, a group of 15 TU Delft students embarked on a workshop to the city of São Paulo. After two weeks of great impressions and hard work, participants presented their investigations at the university of FAU-USP. These results have now been translated into panels and will be displayed this June at the Street of Bouwkunde. The particular-ity of this event is that not only organization and theory has been in the hands of students but also all didactical schemes centered on equality and participation of all workshop parties involved. Driving force has been a belief in potentials of workshops as condensed learning events and didactical alternatives to generate and transfer knowledge. To achieve this endeavor of integral experience, a transdisciplinary framework substantiated by an ICT based methodology has been de-veloped. In this article the organizing CSI Team would like to explain in more depth the concept of the initiative, show the experiences during the on-site workshop and give a small preview of the participant’s work.

In 2007 two Explorelab students began to translate their personal dissatisfaction about the workshop landscape at the TU Delft into more concrete plans. Although prior the fire and economic crises the faculty of architecture shared similarities with a travel agency it could certainly not keep the same promises as satisfaction or money back guarantees. More often than not quality lacked in execution and results. Particular workshops taking place in distant places seem to be characterized by relative chaotic organizations and irregular on-site collaborations. The City Space Investigations Workshop 2009 taking place in São Paulo illustrated that such shortcomings are not necessities. On the contrary: even students can realize a smooth international event by bringing the adequate motiva-tion and commitment.

The first CSI workshop - conceived as a pilot project - took place in New

York City in spring 2008: small in scale and setup, the event delivered important insights to the or-ganization in a trial and error approach. Emphasis was given to participatory approaches to evaluate their capacities for educational events (see upcom-ing Architectural Annual for more information). A

year later, the CSI.SP workshop builds on this past experience taking this idea a step further by tying the participants’ efforts to a stronger theoretical outline focusing on the informal production of urban space and a methodologi-cal framework supported by new ict developments. To technically achieve this, the CSI team grew by a third member. In doing so, it was hoped to unlock the potentials of workshops as integral learning experience. In more concrete terms, urban space has been used as communication interface among different disciplines and along different scales, while GPS tracking was applied to break scale barriers of local impressions vs. global visions and blogging unlocked the potential of asynchronous communication in larger group settings.

The CSI workshops are based on partic-ipatory approaches, trans-disciplinarity, local input and ict frameworks.

Another lesson learnt from the first CSI.NY workshop has been that total freedom can be problematic in itself. Initially students could formulate their ideas relatively unbiased by theories within a very loose methodological framework. The only constraints have been that the idea can be realized within a two week on-site period, and the topic confirms to the general fo-cus on informal processes within the urban environment. Consequently a lot of participants felt lost in front of such empty canvas and considerable efforts were needed to give directions to individual proposals. This year a dif-ferent approach was taken, by formu-lating a precise theoretical framework informed by the graduation theses of the organization team dealing with ur-ban informality.

The concept of (urban) in-formality has to be under-stood in its larger meaning as sphere outside formality, as to say beyond the reach of lo-cal or national governments, law and planning. Informality in urban space thus contains spatial and non-spatial reali-ties. Also the sphere of illegal-ity pertains to informality but as this illicit form represents an extreme within the world of informality there is on the other side of the scale a real-ity of high potential to benefit lower population groups or

society at large. At this end situates the concern and the motivation of the CSI initiative. How to make use of the creative energies of informality in a world of increasing urbanization and inequality?

The CSI workshop followed a classic threefold setup, preparation, on-site

and postproduction phase. The Pre.SP started in February and consisted of weekly lecture blocks and a Portuguese crash course that should stimulate local exchange during the two weeks in São Paulo. The lectures covered relevant topics, such as an introduction to the city, urban space, and urban informality. Lecturers were taped and made accessible via our website. Experts within and outside the faculty were invited to give a speech, including Kees Konings from Utrecht University and Erhard Berner, a lecturer at the ISS Den Haag. Additionally some meetings were used to fine tune individual fascinations into sizeable projects which would be then elaborated on-site.

In the beginning of April the workshop

group finally took off to Brazil. Af-ter a short acclimatization phase the heart piece of the whole initiative started on the 5th of April with a gathering in the Parque do Ibirapuera. The group building activities were the first occasion local students from the FAU-USP and TU Delft participants met. The following days were reserved for intensive input. With rented busses we tried to visit diverse locations giving a repre-sentative overview of the complex realities in this 18 million megacity. In a dialectic setup, bright and hidden sides of São Paulo altered in a half-day rhythm. The first location to visit was an estab-lished peripheral illegal subdivision, Cantinho de Céu. This informally grown area, home to 8.000 families, has drawn considerable media attention as the spring semester of Harvard School of Design used this settlement as their design assignment. Lectures consolidated the impressions collected during the on-site stroll that this neighbourhood features more wealth and space than initially imag-ined. In the afternoon a stop at the Cidade Jardim, one of the biggest real estate developments of the last years, was scheduled. Several complexes fea-turing housing and offices were situated around a shopping mall that created another (middle to high

income) off-world in the urban fabric. The accessi-bility solely by car underlined the insular character of this development. Already on the first day, the strongest characteristic of São Paulo broke through the surface: Segregation - a vernacular city of ver-nacular architecture (seemingly to even slowly shape a vernacular society).

On the second day the morning was reserved for an extensive excursion to Paraisopolis. This favela owes its fame to its vicinity to one of the most expensive areas of Greater São Paulo. In the course of time, an area unattractive to formal developers due to its extreme topography has been invaded and slowly taken over by squatters. Today Paraisopolis is home to 15.000 households. Several upgrading schemes have been launched and SEHAB (the housing department), that toured us through the area, is itself very active in replacing precarious houses and introducing infrastructure. Also here the envisioned despair

was far more punctual as imagined while the harsh spatial segregation towards abutting richer areas gave food for thoughts. The program of the third and fourth day is best told in combination. While a trip to Alphaville should actually illustrate the extreme level of segregation at the rich end of the population scale, a visit to cortiços (inner city housing slums) revealed the desolation at the other end. Alphaville is a gated community par excellence. Driven by increasing crime rates in the city and the imagination of a private developer, this area was built in the 1970s and is now home to 20.000 residents. High-end security standards and splendid houses are as striking as the deserted ‘public spaces’ and the army of maintenance staff trimming lawns and cleaning windows. On the last day of the excursion block a visit to one cortiço unveiled the face of poverty in the midst of the city. In vertical slums dozens of families share living space that was initially conceived for a fraction of the current occupants, with the consequence of insanitation, noise and lack of privacy. But still no despair, it seemed their deplorable situation was more imposed by our judgement than felt

by them. Nevertheless, the daily life struggles in the cortiços showed clearly the urge to react and allow a larger population to live a life of minimum decency.

These two realities – Alphaville and the Cortiços - probably

exemplify best the Parallel Worlds in the city of São Paulo and unsurprisingly gave substance or impetus to most of the following students work (most directly in the cortiços group of Marleen de Ruiter, Philippe Jorisch, Jacqueline Rodrigues, and Flavio Faggion). The clash of rich and poor within society is nowhere so visual than in the urban agglomeration of São Paulo. The city of walls is a testimony of vernacular urbanization and thus a capsular society. The stratification of the urban population translates into a pattern of social segregation. The clustering of the sameness goes hand in hand with the exclusion of the otherness. The question of the social sustainability of such development has been questioned by many participants of the workshop and can be seen as strongest incentive of the elaborated projects. The concept of marginality is maybe not only the best theoretical tool to

analyse existing and past situations but also to reflect on future possibilities. Its two dimensional framework of social and spatial marginality emphasizes the connection between both without forcing any causality between them. To change the introversion of São Paulo’s urban space, a mental shift is required. To tear the physical walls of the city, someone needs first to break down the mental walls in the heads of Paulistas. Despite unfavourable conditions and the fact that tendencies seem to go in the opposite directions, it is particularly important to imagine at least possible ways out. The students Jan van Ballegooijen and Rutger Huiberts largely addressed the issues of imagination, representation, and identity on very different scales in the urban environment. Interestingly, other students Nicola Knop and Chris Rovers directly connected with their work on public space to this theme. Public Space, ‘where strangers meet’, is the interface of exchange AND also the structure of the way we perceive our world, therefore it holds the potential to tear down mental and spatial walls of the city.

The broken networks of the public web lead to clusters of publicness and activities poorly connected among each other and restrictive in their accessibility. A valid strategy for spatial and social inclusion would be a diversification and widening of each publicness, with the ideal of an ‘unconditional welcome’ as mentioned by Igor Guatelli, one of our on-site lecturers. What this could mean in precise terms has been elaborated by Sabrina Verhage and Martine Verhoeven, investigating street art and pavements as tools of appropriation.

To tear the physical walls of the city someone needs first to break down the mental walls in the heads of Paulistas.

Both activities, operating technically in legal grey zones, result in a privatization of publicness and thus a diversification of their common degree. The last two participants’ contribution of the group of Arife Karaosmanoglu and Toon Stallaart as well as the architect Bart Aptroot looked at informality as a potential for planning. The first project focused on Minhocão, an inner-city elevated highway that closes down for traffic over night and in the weekends: an urban void is transformed into running and bicycle tracks. Although this change in use is of extreme potentials, the two students looked further into the matter and linked the alternation on the top to the life under bridge. A coherent strategy would have to take both dimensions into account and even more integrate it further into the vicinity. Such an attempt would only be possible by carefully taking into account the creative energies of informality. A scenario Bart Aptroot drafted. Centering on the question what role an architect should have, he explored informality as a design strategy. His and all other work will be displayed in June at Bouwkunde, announcement will follow.

After twelve intensive days and the presentation at the faculty of Architecture of FAU-USP, it was clear that the City Space Investigations 2009 have been a large success. The range of work both in output and approach is extremely pleasing and span from a very technocratic approach towards real estate value of favelas, as seen in the work of Daan van den Berg and Jasper Overkleeft to the interpretation

of perception of the city by Jan van Ballegooijen following very humanistic thinking. But there is more than the mere results to reflect on. The working methodology proved to be operational. Despite the fact that more time should be allocated for blogging next year, the idea has been largely embraced. Even now the blog is used to exchange ideas and discuss topics, owing to the fact that some students, at least partially, integrated their on-site work into their ongoing graduation projects. Nevertheless still some tasks will require elaboration. For example: despite the ambition to open up the workshop to design practitioners, the current peculiar macro-economic situations made the recruitment of professionals a nearly impossible task. Although finally only the Dutch architect Bart Aptroot followed us on the trip, the positive feedback of many offices and the valuable synergic seed we could observe growing during the two weeks confirm that combining educational workshops for students with professionals is a valid aim. For the next year, the City Space Investigations will be held in Africa, preliminary selections are the twin-city of Brazaville-Kinshasa at the borders of the Congos or the capital of Nigeria, Lagos. The positive feedback on blogging surely encourages continuing this communication element. The appealing dimension to the location Kinshasa-Brazaville is that the relative complicated border issues make a twin-workshop an obvious solution. Two separate groups could coordinate workflows and exchange ideas and discuss findings via the internet portal of he Urban Detectives.

1st stepsStep # 8 A Suitable ending for a Bril-liant Career

It is true that his column went much beyond the first steps one can take after graduation, covering almost your entire career already. So after you have become famous, there is one more issue we need to talk about and the closing issue of this year is the most suitable one to talk about your retirement. Having a great and successful career isn’t everything. Equally important is to leave the architectural world with style. I have been trying really hard to gather some information on the retirement age of great architects but it seems rather impossible. If you think about it, we almost never learn these things at school, when did all great architects stop building? How did they spend their old age? The fact that their works are still standing doesn’t mean that they are also still around… In fact there not so many architects that retired, most of them died over their drawing table. Mies van der Rohe died at the age of 83, only one year after the completion of the National Gallery in Berlin and one month after Walter Gropius. There is a significant category of architects that died in acci-dents. The most famous case is probably Gaudi, run over by a tram, which he didn’t even see coming, being so absorbed in his Sagrada Familia plans, but also Aldo Rossi who died in a car accident in 1997. I couldn’t really find many architects who died of old age, except the amazing 98 years old Phillip Johnson that died recently in 2005 and the 86 years old Gropius and maybe we could also talk about Frank Lloyd Wright, even though he didn’t manage to reach the long lives of their colleagues. Johnson’s record is only surpassed by Oscar Niemeyer who is 102 and still around! How-ever, there is a significant amount of archi-tects that died pour and declining, a sign that a successful career doesn’t necessarily lead to a successful drawback. The most terrible story features Adolf Loos, who, af-ter having syphilis, suffering from stomach cancer, ending up almost completely deaf and being accused for pedophilia, he died completely poor at the age of 62. Louis Sullivan went through a long period of decline before dying alone in a hotel room in Chicago and Louis Kahn also suffered a deadly heart attack which cost his life, leav-ing behind lots of debts. His body was not identified for three days. A heart attack also took the life of Le Corbusier, at the age of 77, but under more happy circumstances. He was swimming in the Mediterranean Sea, while working on a project that “would be of major importance to the development of his architectural skills”. His body was found by people bathing around.I don’t know how optimistic the thought of life long work sounds, but the evidence say that becoming a great architect means sacrificing going on pension and retiring is some remote heaven, spending time with your dog and laying in the sun, in a long holiday. What kind of an architect you would be if do not manage to confront the economical crisis and the demanding clients till the end?

The dimension of global urbanization has not only surpassed local and national capacities to properly address growth issues but the sheer extent of ur-ban agglomeration have surpassed human capaci-ties of imagination. This situation is not new, and can be questioned if we were ever able to truly size urbanity in its facets. What is new is the accelerat-ed growth of the gap between local experiences of place and the vastness of operational urban space. Agglomerations surpassing 100 million inhabit-ants with often hypercities at their cores exceed the production and consumption powers of smaller national states. This concentration of power calls for a reformulation of responsibilities and capaci-ties particular in perspective of the escalating in-equality on the ground. Aggregations of wealth are always accompanied by concentration of poverty. The Parallel Worlds Program investigates in edu-cational events new ways of understanding urban complexities of the 21st century, the precondition for any further action.

BKarena, basically making a big database where people can contribute with information, but also videos from Indesem, for example. It’s a cool project and we need to support it.

Q: Do you think students are involved enough, and what are the different ways to get involved? Is there more to involve-ment than just being in the Management Team or in the Student Council?

A: Of course, there are many ways in which stu-dents can be more involved. Being a student-assistant, although there are less of them now, is a great way, for example. But you have to find something that fits you. If you like management, you can be in the Student Board, or in the Man-agement Team like me. Or join Stylos or BouT or BOSS. If you work at the faculty as a student assistant you begin to understand things and meet a lot of interesting personalities. There’s a lot you can do and you just have to be creative. And if there is just this one thing that irritates you about the faculty, address it! That’s some-thing we really lack now. The Student Council asks for feedback, students complain, but these actions don’t meet each other.

Q: About student involvement: what did you think about the petition to stop the painting of the windows in all those dif-ferent colours?

A: There was a great commotion about it, fan-tastic! It is the job of Student Council to express the view of the majority of students. the Stu-dent council did well in its role.

I don’t really represent the majority and I per-sonally like the windows. If architecture depend-ed on the taste of majority, the world would be very moderate. Wouldn’t that be a pity?!

Q: How did you become involved in the Management Team of the Faculty of Architecture?

A: It was quite simple. I just applied for the vacancy. Then I had an interview with my predecessor. I’ve always been interested in a way that the faculty works, how changes are made and implemented, but I never partici-pated in that. So when I started my Master’s I thought it would be a good opportunity to do more at the faculty and become more involved. But in fact it just started with that interest.

Q: How long have you been in your po-sition?

A: I started in October, after I worked for some time with my predecessor. And I will finish in October as well, so I’ll have to work through the summer as well.

Q: Were you involved in the moving of the faculty to Julianalaan? How did it work?

A: There was a project team responsible for the housing of the faculty on julianalaan. They reported to the management team. Af-ter summer and the period of crisis manage-ment due to the fire, the management team was confronted with the budgetary problems that had to be solved.

As a student member you meet with the Stu-dent Council (FSR), the staff, the Manage-ment Team and the Education Board (Onder-wijscommitte). As the student member you play a linking role between these parties This is needed to fill the gap, always exist-ent between staff and students. Within the management team I do not represent the student population, as the FSR does, but I provide feedback thinking and experiencing the faculty as a student. And in the meeting with the student council I provide background information

Q: With which persons did cooperation go the best, and at which points was it more difficult?

A: In the beginning I had to find my way in the staff meetings. Sometimes it is hard to address a student ‘thing’ in the context of a meeting. I also found out that a lot of com-munication is done in an informal way. Also the staff area of the building is a bit isolated, normally as a student you only go there to see the study counselors.. Now I sometimes work in the same area as quality control and international office just to hear more about what’s going on,

Q: The university recently introduced the “harde knip” and next year, the “bindend studieadvies” (BSa) will go into action. Were you also involved with that?

A: That was a very weird process. At first we thought, with the Student Council, that they would not introduce it in September 2009. We think it’s a good measure, but we do not believe that the students and the faculty are ready for all these changes at the same time.

And then suddenly, within a month, it was ad-dressed at different meetings and then the Management Team approved it. That was quite upsetting. But in my position, you can inform the Student Council and Stylos really quickly. They responded with a letter, but that didn’t work out, unfortunately. We asked that some goals be reached before BSa goes into effect.

Q: If you look back on your time in the Management Team, what has been your biggest success so far?

A: You have more expectations of the whole thing than you can actually realize in such a short time. It takes some time to figure out how everything works, and things at the faculty go quite slowly. People work hard, but before a thing passes through all the layers of the faculty, it takes some time. In my position, it is quite difficult to change things. I am more involved with informing and communicating with differ-ent persons within the faculty.

It is important to have a bridge between the Management team and the Student Council, because the scale differs a lot. The Student Council is concerned with the small scale, whereas the Management team takes large-scale decisions about the faculty. I act as an intermediator between these two; I try to push the Student Council to think on a larger scale.

Q: After you finish in your current posi-tion, are you still planning to be involved at the faculty?

A: I’m sure a certain involvement will always stay, but I believe you should also move on.

Q: What does it take to be a student mem-ber in the Management Team?

A: It is important that you have a vision for the faculty, can work independently. And since most of the time is spend talking, it is also im-portant that you like that! Of course there has to be a kind of commitment to the faculty, it is preferable that you have spend some time here as a student.

Q: You mentioned the dean. How was

it, dealing with three different deans in the course of your time in this position? Wasn’t there a continuity problem?

A: Wytze Patijn got ill just a few weeks after I started. I just began to understand how he works. Then you get a completely different per-sonality, so that was quite interesting. I think Wytze, Jan and Peter have very different per-sonalities. They also come from different areas of bouwkunde, and you see that clearly, the ‘artist’, the ‘engineer’ and the ‘researcher’. I ex-perienced always a continuity, since people sur-rounding them continue with their projects.

Q: What do you think needs to be ad-dressed more strongly at the faculty in the future?

A: What I saw and what interested me was that communication isn’t ideal. Information is so scattered that it is difficult to find what you need. And of course, not everyone reads their newsletters regularly. The real space, our build-ing, is beautiful, but we also need to improve our virtual space. We need to have one place where you can find all the information and where eve-ryone can join in. A place where you can clearly find what is going on in the real space and par-ticipate in that.

The miscommunication may be due to the dif-ference between generations. We are taught to filter useful information from a bulk information. The Marketing and Communication in their cur-rent strategy focuses on the visitor, they select the stuff that they think is interesting to you and they send it to you, but who decides what you really want to know? The structure isn’t trans-parent enough.

Detail erkennen als een begin van ruimte. Tas-tende en voelend. Dit kunnen als een school. Klas als start. Mijn klas. Mijn plek in die klas. Mijn klas en buiten. Mijn klas binnen. En zo: misschien wel mijn school. Van vroeger.Mag ik dit klassiek noemen. Of straks: één van de klassiekers?Het project. De school. Is een school die achter je staat. Niet voor je.

The traditional school-type of the Grammar School enjoys growing popularity in recent years. Cur-rently Amsterdam Grammar Schools are highly respected and face long waiting lists due to their aura of exclusivity, quality and thouroughness. Reason for the city of Amsterdam to add a newly founded Grammar School to the well-established group of three traditional Grammar Schools in the city, called the ‘Fourth Grammar School’. Reason for our Msc3-4 studio called ‘Back to School’ to take the brief developed for this new institution as a starting point.

In our studio we situated the new Grammar School in Amsterdam North, a quickly developing and gentrifying but still inspiringly heterogeneous part of the capital. The exact choice of the location had to be made by the individual students themselves.

Like a few of his colleagues Merijn Muller felt at-tracted to the spatious, lush yet slightly derelict Flora Park. He partly reused the site of an exist-ing outdoor swimming pool on the Northern Edge of the park for the generous sport facilities of his project and placed the main building containing all classrooms and collective facilities next to a nar-row dyke.

Merijns awareness of the specific qualities of his chosen site and his interest for the fragmented, charming and historically layered architectural con-text played a decisive role in the design. Merijn took the dyke as a gentle backbone for the extremely long and narrow volume, slightly bent along the curved path and looking out over the park. In-stictively referring to building types such as the sanatorium or the beach site hotel the building has been designed not only to enjoy the pleasant views to the landscape but to establish a formal edge to

it. The long rows of classrooms on two floors all establish a direct and intense relationship with the outside. The rooms themselves have been subtly sculpted using an expressive yet simple loadbear-ing structure as the main means to differentiate the character of the various classrooms and more public spaces. Merijn attempts to bring the building to life by using a deliberately small range of pre-cisely defined and carefully designed elements and themes – and manages to convince his audience to accept these as the appropriate ingredients for a convincingly contemporary school.

Merijn’s design doesn’t relate to the many spec-tacular school projects that determine current Dutch school architecture nor does it propose in-novative didactic experimentation. During the de-sign process he never challenged the school-type’s traditional character and typology but accepted it as essential for the Grammar School’s timelessly succesful social position. And he made it part of his architectural strategies and convictions.The building’s quality derives from its precision and tectonic expression, its well- considered propor-tions and refined use of materials and colours. The chosen presentation techniques enhance these qualities. By exclusively using large scale models and model photography Merijn took his audience during his final presentation on a sensual, rich and yet stunningly realistic tour through the colourful, reflective world of his building. One felt like open-ing the window, listening to the sounds of the park, hanging around with friends on the balustrades of the large terraces, smoking, chatting and putting chewing gum on all the wrong places. One felt like being back to school. But to an optimistic one, blue and green and springy. <b

THOUGHTS ON A BUILDING BECOMING A SCHOOLA DESIGN FOR A GRAMMAR SCHOOL IN AMSTERDAM NORTH

BUILDINGThe project is situated in Amsterdam North, a surprisingly suburban part of the city with the Florapark as an even more country-like centre. The site offered an opportunity to make a build-ing with a strong relation to the landscape. Low and long, having topographic qualities itself, the building almost becoming a landscape. Loggias and roof-terraces intermediate between the lush surroundings and the interior. The design is based on repetition. Repetition of classrooms, of structural elements, of windows. It is a design that dwells on sameness rather then (forced) differentiation. It is a building not afraid of becoming boring. Still, small differences make the generic structure specific. Differ-ences based on particularities within the programme, the site or imagined use.

SCHOOLThe building is to become a school. A grammar school in which the teaching still takes place in the traditional classroom.But next to this formal aspect of learning ‘school’ is about a lot of different things. It is about making friends, about growing up, about falling in love and smoking a first cigarette. During the six years one spends in school the building is there, all the time as a background, providing space and offering possibilities. Possibilities to hang around, to meet up with others or to retreat from the strong community such a school is.

The project wants to fulfill the programme, to serve the way of teaching specific for the grammar school. The classroom is, as in the schools we all went to, the dominant spatial element.

But at the same time the project wants to offer more. Trough a series of spaces and intermediate zones it goes beyond the programme, enabling unpredictable use: an extra route, some outdoor space, a glimpse in the classroom next to yours.

B_N: Vertelt u eens over de eerste jaren op de faculteit.

MvW: “Voordat ik op Bouwkunde werkzaam was, werkte ik in de bouw als timmerman. Eén van mijn hobby’s was muziek en een heer op Bouwkunde maakte toen slagwerkinstrumenten. Ik vernam via hem dat er een vacature in de timmerwerkplaats van de faculteit vrijkwam en zo ben ik er ingerold.

In de timmerwerkplaats hield ik me vooral bezig met het maken van kabinetten op de even ver-diepingen van de hoogbouw, het onderhoud aan het gebouw, het opzetten en bouwen van vele ten-toonstellingen… eigenlijk alle voorkomende werk-zaamheden die met timmeren te maken hadden op de faculteit.

Eén van de eerste tentoonstellingen die ik toen heb helpen bouwen, voor de mensen die het zich nog kunnen herinneren, was een tentoonstelling over Scandinavië. Ik maakte toen een Finland-woud, bestaande uit boomstammen die met touwen overeind werden gehouden. Zo werd een soort bos gevormd. Daartussen was dan van alles te zien.

Ook belangrijk was het restaureren van antiek, bijvoorbeeld van de oude Sluytermancollectie en de waardevolle stoelencollectie die gered is na de brand. En voor een tentamenwerkstuk voor de op-leiding meubelrestauratie heb ik de Weebertafels gemaakt: de grote gele tafels met de ijzeren stang in het midden, naar ontwerp van Carel Weeber.

Na twee weken in dienst van de faculteit, werd het idee geopperd om een ontspanningsruimte te bouwen in de kelder. Naar het voorbeeld van Elektrotechniek, werd het idee van een kegelbaan geïntroduceerd. Die ben ik met studenten en col-lega’s gaan bouwen in m’n vrije avonduren. Een jaar later werd de Bouwpub geopend: toen dus nog een kegelbaan, waar ook een drankje bij ge-nuttigd kon worden – het behoeft geen uitleg dat gaandeweg het drankje meer gebruikt werd dan de kegelbaan.

Meteen werd ik toen ook gebombardeerd tot de eerste voorzitter van de pub, onmondig en zon-der enige bestuurlijke ervaring. Dat was behoorlijk eng ja, in het begin. Uiteindelijk heb ik het zes jaar volgehouden, waarna iemand anders het stokje overnam. Na een tijdje ging het bergafwaarts met de pub, maar de mensen op de faculteit wilden het niet sluiten. Hierdoor kwam er, 12 jaar na de eerste opening, een herstart. Toen ben ik nog eens zes jaar voorzitter geweest, waarna er op mijn aan-raden werd overgegaan op studentenvoorzitters. Elke 1 à 2 jaar wordt een nieuwe voorzitter aan-gesteld, en ze doen het nu prima. Alle jaren ben ik hen behulpzaam geweest en heb ik hen gead-viseerd.”

Dan excuseert Jack Breen zich – hij moet enkele studenten begeleiden – met de me-dedeling dat hij zo terug is.

B_N: Hoe bent u in de Vormstudiehal te-rechtgekomen?

MvW: “Na verloop van tijd werd er bezuinigd bij de timmerwerkplaats. Hierdoor ging ik uitzien naar een andere functie. Frans Postma, het toenmalige hoofd Maquettebouw, heeft mij toen benaderd.

Eén van de eerste tentoonstellingen waarvoor ik toen maquettes moest maken, ik weet het nog goed, was in 1988. Er was in de Beurs van Berlage een groot evenement gepland, genaamd ‘Neder-land 2050’. Ik werkte aan zes maquettes, en het verschil met de oude timmerwerkplaats werd met-een duidelijk: hier werd maar heel summier aan-gegeven hoe men wilde dat die maquettes eruit moesten zien. Je kreeg een grote plaat met een kaart erop. Dan werd gezegd: “hier moeten enkele blokken zo en zo op”. Zo had ik het nog nooit mee-gemaakt. Ik had ook de eerste anderhalve maand best moeite om op te starten, maar uiteindelijk dacht ik bij mezelf: ik moet gewoon beginnen. En uiteindelijk zijn het hele mooie maquettes gewor-den.

Gedurende anderhalf jaar deed ik met Frans Postma maquetteoefeningen voor het onderwijs. Toen Frans en het toenmalig hoofd Vormstudie en Maquettetechniek Bouwkunde verlieten, werd Jack Breen aangesteld als hoofd Vormstudie en Maquettetechniek. Ik werd de vaste Coördinator/ Leidinggevende van Instructeurs Maquettetech-niek van de Maquettewerkplaats.

De maquettewerkplaats van toen, ja hoe zal ik het zeggen… het waren een beetje Ollie B. Bommel-toestanden. De machines stonden midden in de hal, mensen liepen te eten, te roken, tussen de apparaten… daardoor werd het natuurlijk ook hartstikke lawaaiig en onveilig. Eén van de eerste dingen die ik toen voor elkaar gekregen heb, is het machinepark: een afgesloten ruimte, met nieuwe, betere machines. Hierdoor werd het een stuk over-zichtelijker in de hal en een stuk veiliger. Gelukkig zijn er nooit grote ongelukken gebeurd. Wel heb ik één keer alles stilgelegd. Het was veel te druk en we waren onderbezet. Kijk, er zijn altijd drukke pe-riodes, aan het eind van het semester bijvoorbeeld, maar toen was het extreem. Ook is het gelukt om het materialenaanbod flink uit te breiden. Het werd mogelijk voor studenten om tegen redelijke beta-ling allerlei soorten materialen te bestellen bij ons en de volgende dag werd het dan geleverd.

Na de brand was de vormstudiehal een puinhoop. Er hebben tafels in brand gestaan, ja. Maar uitein-delijk is alleen het middelste deel, bij de balie, echt aangetast. Het machinepark was helemaal intact, een enorme opluchting. Die machines zijn dus uit-

eindelijk ook meegenomen naar de Julianalaan. Inclusief de CAD-CAM machines en ook nieuwe machines, die overigens al voor de brand besteld waren. Ik liep er net even binnen, en ik moet zeg-gen, het is een wereldwerkplaats.”

B_N: Hoe heeft u de overgang naar de Julianalaan ervaren?

MvW: “Het afgelopen jaar was heel erg moeilijk. Zeker die eerste periode na de brand. We werden toen eerst bij Industrieel Ontwerpen onderge-bracht, maar dat was stukken minder leuk dan we gewend waren. Dat lag vooral aan de regels van de leidinggevende daar. Onze manier van werken en onze omgang met studenten is heel anders dan bij IO, waardoor er spanningen ontstonden. Om een voorbeeld te geven, hun dieptrekker is niet in al te beste staat: het vacuüm raakte telkens ver-stopt. Toen ik ging kijken waarom dat was, werd het meteen duidelijk: ze hadden alles ingevet, naar hun zeggen om de mal te verwisselen. Helemaal niet nodig! Maar luisteren, ho maar… Het ging zelfs zo ver dat IO-studenten naar ons toekwamen om

te komen dieptrekken! Later verhuisden we naar Civiele Techniek en daar had ik al veel meer het ge-voel dat we er welkom waren. Maar alle problemen ten spijt, hield ik altijd in het achterhoofd dat het goed zou komen en nu gaat het super. Met grote complimenten voor mijn opvolgster, Astra Loning.”

B_N: Zij gaat nu uw functie overnemen?

MvW: “Dat heeft ze al gedaan. Anderhalf jaar geleden is Astra aan het werk gegaan en na een half jaar heb ik het stokje overgedragen. Twee kapiteins op één schip werkt niet. Astra doet het anders dan ik, meer op een moderne wijze, maar echt fantastisch.”

Dan komt Jack Breen opnieuw binnenlopen. Net op het juiste moment, merkt hij op.

JB: “Ik zat in de sollicitatiecommissie. Dat was nog best een lastige opgave, want ja, wie kan Maarten nou opvolgen? Astra heeft een hele andere per-soonlijkheid dan Maarten, ze is wat nuchterder, za-kelijker, maar ze geeft, net als Maarten, altijd 200%. Maartens erfgoed is in goede handen. Maarten is altijd een teamspeler geweest. De groep maquet-tetechniek is een hecht team geworden en dat is voor een heel groot deel zijn verdienste. Er zijn veel sociale activiteiten geweest bijvoorbeeld, er is heel veel gedaan om mensen echt te laten samen-werken. En ik ben ervan overtuigd dat dat in de nieuwe hal gewoon voortgang gaat krijgen.”

MvW: “Ja, die nieuwe hal is geweldig, ons nieuwe

Na bijna 36 jaar op Bouwkunde te hebben gewerkt, neemt Maarten van Wageningen op 11 juni afscheid als Coördinator Maquettetechniek. Ter gelegenheid hiervan een interview met een man die je gerust een senior van de faculteit kan noemen, hoewel de bescheiden Maarten dat zelf nooit zou zeggen. Jack Breen schoof ook aan voor het interview. Als hoofd Vormstudie gaat hij samenwerken met de nieuwe Coördinator, Astra Loning.

circus! Toen ik er liep, ging ik het bijna jammer vin-den om er niet meer te werken… Maar ik besefte me dat het mooi is geweest.”

B_N: Kunt u enkele hoogtepunten opnoe-men in al die jaren Bouwkunde?

MvW: “De diverse jubilea van de Bouwpub waren toch wel elke keer een hoogtepunt. Van tevoren had ik nooit gedacht dat dat zo lang zou blijven bestaan, met de potentie ook om nog veel langer te blijven bestaan. Het samenwerken met de stu-denten, met natuurlijk Linda (de Vos, die vanaf haar computer een knipoogje geeft, red.), vond ik echt super. Ook de grote tentoonstellingen, eens in de paar jaar, waren erg leuk om te doen. Ook leuk om te vertellen: sommige mensen die je nu overal terugziet, heb ik nog gekend in hun studen-tentijd. Met Wytze Patijn en Kees Duijvenstein heb ik bijvoorbeeld in dezelfde Democratische Beleids-fractie gezeten. En met Max Risselada heb ik een speciale band opgebouwd, ik heb hem geholpen met het opbouwen van heel wat zijn tentoonstel-lingen. Ook kan ik de Bouwkundefeesten noemen (later overgegaan in BkBeats, red.). Daarvoor heb ik ook heel veel in elkaar gezet met de timmer-werkplaats. Toentertijd werd dat nog veel groter opgezet dan de laatste paar keer, de hele kelder en eerste verdieping werden ook nog meegeno-men. Nu zie je dat er allerlei dure, professionele dingen worden gehuurd, maar vroeger deden wij dat allemaal zelf, ‘s avonds, in onze vrije tijd. Mijn vrouw merkte toen nogal eens op, “Je bent met Bouwkunde getrouwd”…

Maar de grootste pepper, om het zo maar te zeg-gen, is toch wel het verbeteren van de maquette-werkplaats. Mijn voorganger, Frans Postma, heeft lang gestreden voor een grotere, beter uitgeruste maquettewerkplaats. Hem is dat toen niet gelukt, en mij, stapje voor stapje, is dat uiteindelijk wel gelukt. Deze kans kwam gewoon op mijn pad en ik

heb het opgepakt. En ik heb er er heel veel plezier aan beleefd. Er zijn genoeg mensen geweest die alles wat we bereikt hadden kapot wilden maken hoor. Carel Weeber bijvoorbeeld, hij vond het een afstervend iets, die maquettehal.”

JB: “Het is nu moeilijk voor te stellen, maar zo’n tien jaar geleden, met de introductie van compu-ters in het onderwijs, riep iedereen om het hardst dat we de maquette niet meer nodig zouden heb-ben. Je kon immers alles zien op het scherm. Nu lacht iedereen je uit als je dat zegt: de Vormstu-diehal is altijd één van de drukst bezette ruimtes, springlevend dus. Mede dankzij trouwens de inter-gratie van de computertechniek in de maquette-bouw – Computer Aided Modeling, CAM. En het besef dat je, als je met je handen bezig bent iets te maken, je tegelijkertijd nadenkt over wat je maakt. Je denkt na welke stappen je moet nemen, hoe je iets moet maken. Het is een bouwproces in het

Vormstudiehalklein, een vorm van toegepaste intelligentie. Dat heb je met de computer alleen stukken minder.”

B_N: In al die jaren Bouwkunde heeft u de studenten natuurlijk ook zien veranderen. Wat viel u voornamelijk op?

MvW: “Toen ik pas begon, was er veel democrati-sering. Bouwkunde was in die jaren een vrij links, progressief bolwerk. Het communistische krantje ‘De Waarheid’ werd wel eens verspreid. Er was veel actie, veel confrontatie. Eens kwam de minis-ter langs, nou het gebouw hing vol met spandoe-ken. “Wij laten ons niks door jou vertellen”, in die geest. Dat is later wel veranderd. Ik wil niet zeggen dat het rechtser is geworden, maar wat rustiger, wat burgerlijker.”

JB: “Dat is bijvoorbeeld goed te zien in de bestu-ren van Stylos. Vroeger waren dat echte wereld-verbeteraars, nu zie je dat het wat meer yuppen zijn geworden, heel professioneel gaat het eraan toe. De student is steeds meer een consument ge-worden, wat meer meegaand en minder kritisch.”

B_N: Hoe gaat het nu verder met Vormstu-die?

JB: “Het Vormstudie onderwijs loopt erg goed. Na de zomer organiseren wij een nieuwe Minor, sa-men met de leerstoel Woningbouw. ‘House of the Future’ heet het. Daar ga je nog wat van horen in de toekomst. En je merkt dat de collega’s erg veel zin hebben om in de nieuwe ruimte te werken. De hal heeft echt allure. De zonwering bijvoorbeeld is op zijn manier ook wel erg mooi en absorbeert ook nog eens geluid. Het is een geweldige ruim-te, maar heel ‘publiek’. Het zal goed gereguleerd moeten worden, aangezien er erg veel mensen komen.”

MvW: “Ja, er zullen goede afspraken gemaakt moeten worden met de studenten wat mag en wat niet mag. Eten zal bijvoorbeeld niet mogen. Dat was al zo in de oude hal en zal ook nu duidelijk gemaakt moeten worden.”

JB: “Maar de kern blijft dat de deur open moet staan voor de studenten en dat we altijd laten zien wat er gebeurt. Neem de eerstejaarsprojecten, de mooiste daarvan worden elk jaar tentoonge-steld, samen met hun Vormstudie portfolio’s. Veel mensen herinneren zich waarschijnlijk nog wel de tentoonstellingen- en boekenserie, ‘De Tafel’, ‘De Bank’, ‘De Brug’, ‘De Wand’ en kort geleden: ‘Mo-dels’, een grote tentoonstelling met allerlei soor-ten maquettes uit het depot. Ook daar werd weer duidelijk dat iedereen maquettes interessant vindt. Van jong tot oud, van koffiejuffrouw tot decaan, ze wilden het allemaal zien. Je ziet, Vormstudie én Maquettetechniek gaan, nu eindelijk ook in BK City,

onverminderd door. Ik durf te zeggen dat deze faculteit één van de beste maquettewerkplaat-sen van Europa heeft, en misschien wel van de wereld.”

MvW: “Wat me ook altijd is opgevallen is, dat als internationale bouwkundestudenten hier ko-men, ze altijd hun ogen uit kijken. Altijd vragen ze: “Can I take pictures?”. Dat zegt toch best wel wat.”

B_N: En wat gaat u nu verder doen?

MvW: Zeevissen is één van mijn hobby’s en ook tuinieren mag ik graag doen. Maar dan wil ik wel alles zelf ontdekken, wat groeit goed bij wat bijvoorbeeld. Sinds anderhalf jaar zit ik bij een nieuwe tuinvereniging in Rotterdam en sinds zes weken ben ik daar voorzitter.”

JB: “Je bent een natuurlijke voorzitter!”

MvW: “Nou ja, ik kan vooral geen nee zeggen… Verder ga ik met mijn vrouw de natuur intrek-ken. Vorig jaar heb ik al met m’n zoon een rond-reis door Zuid-Afrika gemaakt. Ik heb het ge-voel, nu ik minder op Bouwkunde ben, dat ik het contact met de jeugd ga missen. Ik heb gemerkt dat dat je wel jong houdt. Ik hoop echt niet zo’n ouwe zuurpruim te worden, dat heb ik gezien bij anderen die gestopt zijn met werken.”

JB: “Nou je krijgt gewoon een gastvrijheidver-klaring, dan kan je altijd komen binnenlopen!”

Het ging die dag niet louter over de toekomst van Bouwkunde, maar over die van de hele universiteit. Want het antwoord op de drie-dubbele vraag wat voor faculteitsgebouw Bouwkunde straks gaat betrekken, waar dat onderkomen zich zal bevinden en met welke andere faculteiten het eventueel zal worden gedeeld, lijkt een essentieel puzzelstukje voor de toekomst van de campus.Om maar meteen de uitkomst van die discus-sie te verklappen: die was er niet. Zeker, als ervaren discussieleider legde denktank-voor-zitter en hoogleraar vastgoedmanagement Hans de Jonge de zweep er over. (“We moe-ten nu echt tot een beslissing komen! Zullen we de zaal maar laten stemmen?”), maar voor de Grote Ontknoping bleek het toch een paar maanden te vroeg.

“Het was een zeer moeilijke, maar opwinden-de tijd”, zei Wytze Patijn, terugkijkend op de hectische weken na de brand. Terugbladerend in zijn agenda van 2008, was hij in die peri-ode soms vijftien onderwerpen op één dag tegengekomen. Er heerste die eerste twee maanden na de brand ‘een kampeerstem-ming’. “Iedereen improviseerde. Ondertussen moesten we snel een beslissing nemen over de herhuisvesting.”Patijn bekende dat de vergaderingen van het design team dat voor de transformatie van het hoofdgebouw moest zorgen, ‘zeer intens’ waren geweest. Hij suggereerde plagerig iets over botsende ego’s en nodigde leden van het team uit om één voor één uit om op het po-dium te komen. “Je bent er in geslaagd veel discussie uit te lokken met je kleurengebruik”, zei hij tegen Job Roos, en legde de architect een lastige vraag voor: wat had hij meer op-windend gevonden: het Hoofdgebouw her-ontwerpen als het appartementencomplex Villa Academica of als faculteit? Roos vertelde over de slimme ideeën die nodig waren ge-weest om een Rijksmonument binnen de gel-dende regels toch een heel nieuw aanzien te geven. “Ja, maar waar lag nu je hart?” hield Patijn aan. “Bij de faculteit”, moest Roos toe-geven.“Ik ben nog steeds verbaasd, overal waar ook ik kom”, zei DSD-hoogleraar Winy Maas

over BK City. “Ik heb grote bewondering voor wat hier is gedaan. Onder andere omstandighe-den had dit enkele jaren gekost.” De problemen moffelde hij niet weg. “Sommige architecten in het ontwerpteam mochten elkaar niet, dus dat was een lastig proces.” En: “We hebben een heel jaar productie verloren, omdat we al onze energie moesten steken in het weer creëren van een positieve sfeer.”BK City is nog niet af, stelde Maas. Als de fa-culteit er uiteindelijk voor zou kiezen om op de Julianalaan te blijven, kon het gebouw weer van nieuwe lagen worden voorzien – ‘als het ultieme Troje.’Job Roos, Hans Wamelink en Alexandra den He-ijer hielden een sophisticated simultaanpresen-tatie over BK City als uitputtend, maar ook uniek project. Zo vertelde hoogleraar bouwmanage-ment Wamelink hoe bij zeer hoge uitzondering kon worden afgeweken van de lastige Europese aanbestedingsprocedures. Harde cijfers gaven een idee van de omvang van het project: 150 bedrijven waren er bij betrokken geweest, 350 construction workers werkten in ploegendiensten dag en nacht aan het gebouw, er werd 30.000 liter verf gebruikt. Wamelink: “Installatietechnici en schilders werkten tegelijkertijd op locatie.” Op de achter-grond verscheen een slide van een inderdaad overvol trappenhuis. “Het was onhandig, maar het moest.”Alexandra den Heijer refereerde tijdens haar verhaal even aan wat ze noemde ‘ the second faculty disaster’: Wytze Patijn die na een routi-neoperatie door een ziekenhuisbacterie plotse-ling in coma raakte. “Dat had een grote invloed op hoe we die maand september ervaren heb-ben”, zei ze niet zonder emotie.Wamelink somde (zonder dat het obligaat klonk) alle groepen op die aan het project hadden mee-gewerkt, van de ontwerpers tot de construction workers. “Alles wat u in deze presentatie hebt gezien was teamwerk.” Hij noemde het project de “eh.. op één-na-mooiste ervaring in mijn le-ven.” Gelach.

Hans de Jonge spoorde de zaal ‘s middags aan om de faculteit eens te bekijken in een breed perspectief: de TU Delft, die zich in tijden van steeds scherpere internationale competitie en

snel slinkende overheidsfinanciering staande moet houden. Hoeveel ruimte de TU Delft straks nog nodig had, hoeveel geld er beschikbaar zou zijn – dat waren de grote onzekerheden. Maar een paar dingen stonden vast, volgens de Jon-ge. Flexibiliteit en een multidisciplinaire benade-ring hadden de toekomst. “En in tegenstelling tot wat veel mensen denken, zal bij Bouwkunde de toestroom van studenten zelfs bij het slecht-ste scenario nog blijven groeien.” Geïntegreerde of losse faculteiten? Veel bache-lorstudenten of, omwille van de kwaliteit, juist vooral masterstudenten? Ateliers of vooral veel online studie? Zulke keuzes hebben grote in-vloed op het ontwerp van het nieuwe faculteits-gebouw, betoogde De Jonge.

“Alles was teamwork”

LovelyBouwkunde en Industrieel Ontwerpen lijken sinds de brand naar elkaar toe gegroeid, maar in een gesprek met Mick Eekhout (‘ben je niet jaloers op ons gebouw, Cees?’) riep IO-decaan Cees de Bont Bouwkunde toch op veel meer samenwerking te zoeken. Zeker, er gebeurden op de BK-faculteit lovely things, maar: “hoeveel mensen van EWI en L&R lopen hier rond? Heel weinig, denk ik.” Eekhout: “Bouwkunde-studen-ten zijn vrij om ook op andere faculteiten te stu-deren, maar dat gebeurt weinig.”Paul Rullmann (College van Bestuur) stelde dat de TU Delft door de overheidsfinanciering niet echt kon kiezen voor een (onderzoeks)univer-siteit met overwegend masterstudenten. “Het kabinet stopt veel geld in het aantrekken van bètastudenten, omdat er te weinig ingenieurs zijn”, zei Rullmann. “Wel kun je je afvragen: willen we op deze universiteit een zo hoog per-centage Bouwkunde-studenten?” Eekhout, ma-licieus: “Dus jouw probleem als onderwijsman van het College van Bestuur is: hoe krijg ik die Bouwkunde-studenten naar andere facultei-ten?”BK-hoogleraren als Mick Eekhout en Kees Kaan zagen niets in het idee dat het nieuwe facul-teitsgebouw zich bij uitstek moest lenen voor multidisciplinair onderzoek. Kaan: “Multidiscipli-nair werken begint bij onderzoeksprogramma’s,

niet bij gebouwen. Architecten werken sowieso altijd multidisciplinair.” Eekhout: “De oplossing voor een probleem is niet altijd het gebouw.’Na verschillende modellen voor een 21ste eeuwse campus te hebben gepresenteerd, waarbij de virtuele campus duidelijk het minst kansrijk bleek, bracht De Jonge de discussie op de verhouding tussen campus en stad. STIP-wethouder Lian Merkx onthulde en passant dat haar partij in de beginperiode stiekem financieel gesteund was door de universiteit. Ze betreurde het dat de TU Delft de gebouwen in het centrum ooit verkocht heeft. “De TU Delft ligt nu te veel in de periferie. Wie er niet werkt of studeert, zal nooit naar de campus komen.” Ze reageerde instemmend toen Rullmann vertelde dat de TU Delft graag faciliteiten als een huisvestingscom-plex voor buitenlandse studenten wil bouwen en daar ook het geld en de ruimte voor heeft, maar gehinderd wordt door procedures. Merkx: “We zijn nu als universiteit en gemeente verwik-keld in een milieu-effectrapportage die niemand eigenlijk wilde.” De Jonge: “Maar bewijzen de ervaringen waar Hans Wamelink net over ver-telde niet dat het ook veel minder bureaucra-tisch kan?” Rullmann: “Dat was toch een vrije unieke situatie. Jullie grepen een kans, en men-sen wilden heel graag helpen.” Francine Houben noemde het ‘bijna immoreel’ om mensen die een jaar lang hebben gewerkt aan BK City nu al te vragen zich op te maken voor de verhuizing naar een volgend faculteits-gebouw. Maurits de Hoog vroeg zich af of zo’n gebouw wel op de oude, relatief afgelegen loca-tie moest worden herbouwd “Een TU-wijk is een vreselijk idee. We moeten ons juist afvragen hoe we de stad de campus kunnen laten binnendrin-gen.” Houben zag wel iets in dat idee. “Maar we moeten de komende maand een zorgvul-dige analyse maken. Wat is de beste oplossing voor de hele universiteit? Misschien wel op de Julianalaan blijven.” Kees Kaan hield die optie ook open: “BK City is een prachtig gebouw, maar bevindt zich op de verkeerde plek: net buiten de campus. Maar het ideaal van de perfecte cam-pus is per definitie onbereikbaar. We kunnen beslissen om hier nog tien jaar te blijven.”

‘BK City: the making of the future’ bleek op 13 mei een goed gekozen titel. De ochtend stond in het teken van een knap in elkaar gezette ‘The Making Of’ over BK City, en ‘s middags werd er na aanleiding van de bevindingen van een denktank heftig gediscussieerd over ‘the future’.

This year, the Capita Selecta lecture series, also known as “Architecture as a craft” was organised with the help of prof. Michiel Riedijk. It comes as no surprise then, that two of the six lectures fo-cus on “The drawing”, prof. Riedijk’s pet topic.

The drawing was discussed a couple of nights earlier (during Indesem) as well, with Robert Winkel, Kas Oosterhuis and Riedijk himself. This time around, Riedijk was just a spectator to two lectures; one by the Dutch architect Wiel Arets, the other by Mark Linder, an American theorist from the Syracuse University. After the “obligato-ry technical problems”, Tom Aevermate opened the lecture by recalling the many successes of Arets, the first speaker of the evening.

Arets then described the manner in which he worked before computers. Before advanced IT technology, Arets claims to have spent three months on one detailed perspective drawing. During this time, he said he has discovered the building, to become to know it, in order to pro-duce “real” architecture drawing. For Arets, a drawing (or perhaps it would be more accurate to call it a pre-computer render) reveals and facilitates the process of thinking. A drawing is an essential tool for the architect to observe the development of building in time. Arets added that the computer render is not precise enough, and therefore cannot take the place of drawings and sketches. This point could have been made very well, if only his presentation did not con-tain almost all computer renders. To be fair, his sketches of the new tower in Amsterdam and sketches of the Utrecht library, although from different stages of the design process, were ex-emplary. All in all, quite an accessible, yet rather forgettable lecture, where the drawing often took the second place to the architectural crea-tion of Arets.

The second speaker, Mark Linder, was a little more difficult to follow, although this reporter believes he managed to get the message. Here, Linder looked at another aspect of drawing, that of literalism. According to Linder, literal-ism cannot be simply found in statements such as “This is this.” He tends to agree with Susan Sontag’s view of a literal criticism which is a “di-rect, loving… description”, although he argues that literalism is much more dense and has the capacity to be more be mischievous. Linder

also presented his views on architectural drawing having the possibility to be literal (representation without idealisation). He explored various archi-tects’ thoughts. He argued that Alberti’s statement about a row of columns being nothing than an extremely perforated wall is an example of literal-ism. However since the Renaissance, architects have been too reductive in their drawings. He showed a few slides about Durand, which, he pointed out, were too re-ductive. “Everyone could draw a neo-classical building”, he said while referring to Durand.

Art, however, gave literalism in ar-chitecture a new im-pulse s i n c e the boom od literalism in visual arts in the 1960s, when artists have started creating such works as the “Six-foot-steel box”. This hon-est and unpretentious articulation in conceptual arts provoked architec-tural thinking as well. Linder closed his lecture with ‘recent’ examples of literalism in architectural drawing, the works of John He-jduk from the 1970s, such as the Texas houses and the Diamond houses. Indeed, the drawings were very literal; they were themselves, not some-thing else (although a superficial resemblance to Mondriaan could be sensed). In this way, Hejduk elevated his architectural drawings to a form of art.

This brief description does little justice to the lec-ture, which went into much more details and gave further examples to illustrate its points. With hind-sight, the second lecture was much more satisfying even if at times, the content was a little too theo-retical, considering that the lecture is actually open to the general public.

Capita Selecta continues in June with more lec-tures. If thess lectures were any indication of the quality that we can expect, it is safe to say that the following lectures might not be brilliant, but at the very least quite satisfactory.

Het Bindend Studieadvies: wat houdt het in?Een bindend studieadvies houdt in dat je je niet opnieuw in kan schrijven voor dezelfde opleiding als je na één jaar onvoldoende studievoortgang hebt gemaakt. De norm voor het bindende advies is dat je 30 studiepunten na één jaar moet hebben behaald. Een volledig propedeuseprogramma omvat 60 studiepunten, dus je moet na een jaar de helft van je punten gehaald hebben om je studie te kunnen voortzetten.

Waarom wordt het Bindend Studieadvies ingevoerd?Ruim 40% van de studenten die een studie in Delft begint, maakt die niet af. De helft van deze studenten stopt in het eerste jaar. Het overige deel stopt pas later in de studie. De TU Delft wil dat studenten eerder op de juiste plaats komen en wil studie-uitval in latere jaren van de studie zoveel mogelijk beperken. Als studenten eerder stoppen,

Ik open mijn TU-mailbox eigenlijk nooit…Open je mailbox dan nog één keer en zorg dat alle email die je ontvangt in je TU-mailbox wordt doorgestuurd naar je hotmail, gmail of welke mail-account dan ook. Je zorgt er dan niet alleen voor

hebben ze meer kansen om succesvol over te stappen naar een andere studie. Bovendien hebben ze dan nog minder van hun studiefinanciering ‘opgebruikt’. Bij veel universiteiten is de BSA al langer van toepassing. In Delft kregen studenten die onvoldoende voortgang maakten in hun studie tot nu toe een dringend negatief studieadvies. Veel studenten volgen dat advies echter niet op. Vaak blijken zij enige tijd later toch af te haken.

Hoe zorg je er voor dat je aan het einde van het eerste jaar niet voor een ‘verrassing’ kom te staan?Gedurende het eerste jaar krijgt de student tussentijdse adviezen en studiebegeleiding om de studievoortgang op peil te houden. Je wordt dus meerdere malen tijdens het eerste jaar geattendeerd op de studievoortgang. Zo zullen eerstejaars studenten rond kerst en in het voorjaar een voorlopig advies krijgen van hun opleiding. Aan het eind van het studiejaar

krijgen studenten een definitief advies. Als er dan minder dan 30EC van de propedeuse (60 EC) zijn behaald, moet de student de opleiding verlaten.

Wat als je er nu in het eerste jaar achter komt dat je een verkeerde studie heb gekozen?De TU Delft vindt het belangrijk dat de student in het eerste jaar nagaat of de juiste studie is gekozen. Wanneer je heel weinig studiepunten haalt, is dit soms niet het geval. Dan is het belangrijk om op tijd na te denken over andere opties. Uiteraard kan je hierbij ondersteuning krijgen.

Invoering BSA

Het gonst al enige tijd door de faculteit en de TU Delft: per september 2009 voert de TU Delft een bindend studieadvies (BSA) in. Studenten die per september 2009 hun BSc in Delft starten, krijgen hier dus mee te maken. Voor studenten die voor 1 september 2009 zijn gestart met hun studie geldt het Bindend Studie-advies nog niet. Aangezien de invoering van het Bindend Studieadvies van groot belang is voor de toekomst van het studeren aan de faculteit, lees je hier alle ‘ins-and-outs’ over het Bindend Studie Advies.

Het ontstaan van een idee

Toen Stylos haar 20ste lustrum vierde in 1991 was dit een aanleiding om verschillende dingen te organiseren. Het uitbrengen van het lustrum-boek “Kaleidoscoop”, de restauratie van het dienstbodehuisje van sanatorium Zonnestraal en één van de activiteiten: de bouw van een paviljoen door studenten.

Het project bestond uit het ontwerpen en bou-wen van een demontabel paviljoen voor de duur van 5 jaar aan de hand van een PvE en gesponsord door firma’s van bouwmaterialen. De bouw zelf moest in principe in één semes-ter plaatsvinden en de deelnemende studenten konden er studiepunten voor ontvangen. Dit bleek een groot succes en de bouw werd dan ook na vijf jaar weer hervat voor het volgende paviljoen: ScafFold. De bouw van dit paviljoen duurde te lang, maar de tegenslagen konden niet verhinderen dat het afgebouwd werd. Maar helaas sloeg het noodlot toe en werd het pa-viljoen door vandalen in de brand gestoken en ging het verloren.

Blackbox

Reden voor het 112e bestuur van Stylos om in 2006 de prijsvraag uit te schrijven voor de 3e editie van het Stylos-paviljoen. Het 113e bestuur van Stylos is met de uitwerking en de bouw be-gonnen. In dat jaar bleek al dat de prijsvraag eigenlijk buiten zijn voegen was gegroeid. De bouw bleek geen studenten-projectje te zijn maar een heuse bouwplaats van een serieus gebouw. Ook bleek het moeilijk het oorspron-

kelijke doel van de prijsvraag, namelijk het bou-wen in een semester en het laten sponsoren door bouwfirma’s, erg moeilijk uit te voeren. Het paviljoen was immers uitgegroeid tot een gebouw dat niet zomaar in een semester ge-bouwd kon worden. En het materiaal waarvoor de architecten gekozen hadden, namelijk hout, bleek in de praktijk niet te worden gesponsord, simpelweg vanwege een tekort in de markt. Hierdoor moest er naar geldelijke sponsoring gezocht worden.

Eindelijk af?

Toen vorig jaar de faculteit afbrandde was o.a. als gevolg van deze bovengenoemde factoren het paviljoen nog niet af. Wat te doen met een gebouw dat niet af is, zonder geld zit en met een grote afstand van de faculteit ligt? Dit is on-dertussen een vraag voor het 115e bestuur. Een prettig idee kwam naar voren. Osiris, het duurzaamheidsplatform van de TU, was op zoek naar een ruimte en vond in BlackBox de ideale plek. Zij wilden het ook afbouwen en het leek voor iedereen een prima oplossing. Het pavil-joen zou afgebouwd worden met de financiële middelen van de TU. Alle tijd en moeite die stu-denten erin gestoken hadden zou niet verloren gaan. Zowel voor de studenten die met hart en ziel aan het ontwerp en de bouw hadden gewerkt als voor Stylos die nog steeds de ver-antwoordelijkheid voor de afhandeling van de sponsors had, was dit de ideale oplossing.

Om dit te realiseren heeft Stylos, ondersteund door de faculteit, afstand moeten doen van het paviljoen en is het gebouwtje overgenomen

door Facilitair Management en Vastgoed van de TU Delft. Zo kon FMVG in samenwerking met Osiris het paviljoen afbouwen.

Toch niet af…

Op maandag 11 mei jl. hebben we echter van de directeur van FMVG, de heer Kahlman, te horen gekregen dat afbouw niet tot de mogelijkheden behoort. De lengte van de vergunning en de kos-ten die gepaard gaan met de afbouw (er moet aan de veiligheidsnormen van de TU worden vol-daan) zijn zo uit verhouding dat FMVG dit onver-antwoord vindt. De TU kan en wil daar geen geld aan besteden.

Er is door vier Stylos besturen, architecten, werk-teams en bouwers veel tijd en energie in het pa-viljoen gestoken. En iedereen had het liefs gezien dat dit project tot een goed einde was gekomen. Wat veel mensen echter vergeten is dat studen-ten nog geen professionals zijn en dat studenten dus kunnen en mogen falen ten behoeve van een leerproces.

Vanwege veiligheidsredenen zal het gebouwtje worden gesloopt. Het 115e bestuur van Stylos ziet geen andere haalbare optie en is hiermee akkoord gegaan.

Naast de zandvlakte waar vroeger ons Bouwkundegebouw stond, staat een gebouwtje moederziel alleen. Van buiten een beetje zielig, maar zodra je binnen treedt wordt je overweldigd door de indrukwekkende ruimte die duidelijk met veel zorg ontworpen en gebouwd is. En dat helemaal door studenten.

Will you be visiting any architectural highlights this summer?

This year I won’t go far away, although I usually do. I plan to go to Zeeland and Zeeuws Vlaanderen, where I plan to visit the old medieval cities; definitely Ghent and maybe Bruges. So this summer I will not escape the built environment, especially not the mediaeval ar-chitecture.

I’ve actually just returned from China. In Beijing we have an exhibit “100 years of Dutch Architecture”. But I have visited traditional as well as modern architecture while being there: the Bird’s Nest and the Water Cube from the Games, and the Koolhaas building. In a month I’ll be going back to see more. I’ve also booked a trip to Bucharest, to see the new and the old architecture. Bucharest has a very rich col-lection of Art Deco architecture. I’ll also go to Crete this summer to see the classical architec-ture, but also what they are building there right now. So I will be quite busy.

Ga mee met de grote reis van StylosGa jij dit jaar ook mee met de Grote Reis van Stylos? Dit jaar reist Stylos van 12 t/m 27 juli af naar Tallinn, Riga, Helsinki en Sint Petersburg. Tijdens de reis zal worden stilgestaan bij vragen als ‘Wat voor invloed heeft de politieke situatie in de verschillende landen gehad op de architectuur van deze landen?’

Het thema van de reis is dan ook ‘Politics versus Architecture’. De kosten voor de reis zijn 650 euro minus eventuele Stylossubsidie. Heb je vragen, opmerkingen, tips of wil je je inschrijven? Wij zien je reactie graag verschijnen!

Docent Vincent Gruis publiceert werk bij Wiley-BlackwellDr.ir. V.H. Gruis is docent Housing Systems bij de afdeling Real Estate & Housing. Onder zijn redactie is onlangs bij de prestigieuze uitgeverij Wiley-Blackwell het boek ‘Management of Privatised Social Housing: International Perspectives’ - een internationaal vergelijkend onderzoek naar het beheer van ‘geprivatiseerde woningen’ – verschenen. In het onderzoek neemt Gruis het beheer van voormalige sociale huurwoningen die zijn verkocht aan de bewoners onder de loep.

Jo Coenen en Winy Maas erelid

Jo Coenen en Winy Maas zijn benoemd tot erelid van het American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Zij ontvingen hun erelidmaatschap samen met zeven andere internationale architecten in de Grace-Kathedraal in San Francisco. Het erelidmaatschap is speciaal voor architecten die niet de Ameri-kaanse nationaliteit hebben of in de Verenigde Staten wonen.

Gewijzigde openingstijden faculteit in piekperiodes juniOp piekdagen voorafgaand aan eindpresentaties en peilingen is de faculteit langer geopend. Fac-ulteit, repro en JB&A zijn dan open tot 24.00 uur.

De faculteit hoopt zo studenten rondom eindpresentaties en peilingen beter te faciliteren. Ook wordt zo een poging gedaan wachttijden bij JB&A en repro te verkorten.

Het gaat hier om de volgende data: 8 t/m 11 juni, 15 t/m 18 juni en 29 juni. Met de verruimde openingstijden tijdens piekperiodes in het onderwijs speelt de faculteit in op de uitslagen van de Monitor Logistieke Kwaliteit.

Peer-review Collo-quium binnen afde-ling ArchitectuurOp 25 juni 2009 is de eerstvolgende editie van de peer-review colloquium binnen de afdeling Architectuur: een dag met presentaties van promotieonderzoek en publieke lezingen van externe gasten. De locatie volgt spoedig op de website van Bouwkunde en de webpagina van de afdeling Architectuur. Het programma is toe-gankelijk voor medewerkers en studenten van de Faculteit Bouwkunde. AR2U010 Maat-schappij en Ruim-te, Maatschappelijk ontwikkelingenSemester Ontwerp en Strategie, Stede-bouwkunde / Urbanism

De laatste mogelijkheid om dit studieonderdeel via een schriftelijk tentamen te herkansen is op 21 augustus 2009. Het afstudeerprogramma Urbanism wordt met ingang van het nieuwe cursusjaar 2009-2010 gereorganiseerd, waarbij AR2U010 (net als de andere vakken) als zodanig verdwijnt. Voor de studenten uit de AR2U-semesterperio-den tot en met het najaarssemester 2008-2009 zijn er dan voldoende herkansingen geweest. Voor studenten uit het voorjaarssemester 2008-2009 is er vanaf 1 september in beginsel de mo-gelijkheid voor een 2e herkansing via de toet-sing met een paper/essay over de verplichte stof (zie de betreffende instructie, zoals te vinden op Blackboard). In verband met de pensionering van de huidige verantwoordelijke docent, zullen de papers/es-says vanaf 1 september 2009 worden beoor-deeld door dr.ir. Roberto Rocco (die ook verant-woordelijk is voor AR2U020).

Voor de studenten die AR2U010 als keuzevak doen, is de schriftelijke herkansing van 21 au-gustus 2009 de laatste mogelijkheid.

For the international students, the test of AR2U010 is writing a paper (see the handout on Blackboard). As the present responsible mentor retires per end of August, it is strongly advised to finish pa-pers in the short term. The master programme Urbanism will be reorganised in the next study year 2009-2010, where AR2U010 (like other present study parts) will disappear.

For students who followed the course in 2007-2008 finishing the paper will be urgent, as they will finish their master programme in June 2009. But also for students from the course 2008-2009 it will be urgent to finish the paper before the next study year begins. The present mentor re-tires per 1 September 2009.

The remaining papers will be discussed and marked by dr.ir. Roberto Rocco (who is also re-sponsible for AR2U020).

Intekenenperiode onderwijs najaar 2009Van 25 mei 11.00u tot en met 12 juni 24.00u vindt de intekenperiode plaats voor het onderwijs van het najaarssemester 2009. Intekenen is verplicht om deel te kunnen nemen aan onderwijs van het volgende semester. Zorg dat je tijdig intekent, want na-intekening is niet mogelijk!

Win 15.000 dollar met je ontwerp voor de San Francisco baai

De Bay Conservation and Development Commission van San Francisco (BCDC) heeft een interna-tionale ideeënwedstrijd uitgeschreven voor innovatieve oplossingen voor de problematiek van het stijgende zeeniveau en de gevolgen daarvan voor de baai. De Rising Tide competitie hoopt zo bruik-bare ideeën en inzichten te verzamelen die toepasbaar zijn voor de baai van San Francisco en in een later stadium ook voor andere gebieden. De organisatie hoopt dat ontwerpers vanuit verschillende ontwerpdisciplines ontwerpen zullen aandragen. De organisatie stelt duurzaamheid en flexibliteit als randvoorwaarden. Inzendingen zijn welkom tot 29 juni. De eerste prijs ontvangt 10.000 dollar.

Hoogleraar Paul Meurs betrokken bij expositie São Paolo tijdens Brazil Con-temporaryDrie Rotterdamse musea brengen van 30 mei tot 23 augustus de rijke Braziliaanse cultuur naar de Maasstad met Brazil Contemporary. Dr.ir. P.H. Meurs – hoogleraar restauratie bij RMIT – heeft voor Brazil Contemporary een tentoonstelling gemaakt over Sao Paolo die te zien is in het NAi. De tentoonstelling brengt de bezoeker in aanraking met de niet te bevatten omvang, de sociale structuren en de bindende krachten van de metropool Sao Paolo.

Two years, two de-greesComputational Design and Fabrication Technologies in Architecture

The Joint Master of Science Program in Compu-tational Design and Fabrication Technologies in Architecture is jointly offered by the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft and the Department of Architecture at Middle East Technical University (METU) and offers its students a double Master of Science degree (from METU and TU Delft). The program focuses on computational design and fabrication technologies in the field of archi-tecture with the goal of exploring cutting-edge design technologies and new design tools as well as new design paradigms in architecture.

The emphasis on both design and research is one of the main advantages of the program, combining as part of the graduation project both a research thesis, as common in the M.Arch. in Design program at METU, and a design project, as common in the Architecture track of the M.Sc. program at TU Delft. Students in this program can also benefit from the emphasis on design theory in the M.Arch. in Design program at METU and the emphasis on design practice in the Architecture track of the M.Sc. program at TU Delft.

On June 17 the Sustain-ablabla!? committee organises, in cooperation with SASBE2009, a very special workshop at the TU Aula, where Michael Braungart and Wubbo Ockels will also lecture. The workshop will contain the design and implementation of small and sustainable interventions to the building of the faculty of architecture. The assignment will focus on the themes of Sustainablabla!?2009 being water, energy & material. Students subscribed to the SASBE2009 can participate in the workshop for free. In cooperation with SASBE2009 Stylos provides single day entrance tickets on Wednesday. This ticket provides access to the Sustainablabla!? workshop and to all lectures and activities of the conference on Wednesday 17th of June like the lecture by Braungart.During the workshop students will cooperate in teams with assistance of a moderator. A professional jury will nominate three designs at the end of the workshop. The winner of the workshop will be announced at the start of Sustainablabla!? in September 2009. De faculteit moet bezuinigen. Verschillende facetten van onderzoek, onderwijs en ondersteuning worden door groepjes medewerkers onder de loep genomen. De faculteit hoopt zo meer efficiëntie te bereiken en dus meer geld over te houden. Tegelijkertijd moet de kwaliteit behouden blijven of zelfs, getuige het rapport van de accreditatiecommissie, verbeterd worden. In de wandelgangen, die in ons huidige onderkomen betrekkelijk lang zijn, worden mogelijke uitkomsten van deze actie al gecommuniceerd. Mij kwam onder meer ter ore dat men overweegt om studenten uit het Master traject in te zetten voor het ontwerponderwijs aan de Bachelor studenten. Ik hoop van harte dat dit initiatief geen doorgang vindt. Wie ook maar een beetje betrokken is bij het onderwijs weet dat Master studenten niet voldoende boven de materie staan om de rol van docent te vervullen. Een Master student heeft brede kennis zonder veel diepgang of heeft misschien lokaal meer verdiepte kennis, maar heeft in het huidige onderwijssysteem zeker te weinig ontwerpervaring opgedaan. In ieder geval lijken zijn of haar kwaliteiten niet toereikend om zonder risico’s de jongere studenten het ontwerpen bij te brengen. Misschien ben ik te streng, maar door schade en schande wijzer geworden, streef ik er als coördinator naar om gastdocenten te ronselen, die minstens drie jaren praktijkervaring hebben. Slecht onderwijs in het Bachelor traject leidt mijns inziens tot veel ellende in de Master en daarom toch weer tot hogere kosten. Het herstellen van fouten is een stuk lastiger en daarom tijdrovender dan het voorkomen ervan.

Ik durf te beweren dat wanneer wij onze beste docenten in het eerste studiejaar zouden inzetten, juist de hoogste efficiëntie wordt gehaald. Er is een parallel te trekken met het opvoeden van kinderen: het geven van liefde, het delen van vertrouwen en bovenal het consequent handelen van de ouders in de vroege levensfase van het opgroeiende kind betaalt zich dubbel en dwars terug in de daaropvolgende fases.

Nu een kleine omweg. Ter lering en ook ter vermaak kijk ik graag terug op mijn eigen levensloop. Niet omdat ik nu speciaal trots ben op mijn verleden, maar eerder omdat ik mij erover verbaas dat ik het ben, die bij die levensloop hoort. Nu ben ik docent in de architectuur, maar had het mij ook niet volledig anders kunnen vergaan? Als ik met zevenmijlslaarzen terugloop in mijn geschiedenis lijkt mijn huidige status steeds onwaarschijnlijker als voorlopig eindpunt. Toen ik in Delft studeerde wilde ik praktiserend architect worden, van het Koninklijk Instituut voor de Marine wilde ik vooral vluchten om iets anders te gaan studeren, op de middelbare school wilde ik neerlandicus of bioloog worden, maar koos ik misleid door valse romantiek voor de Marine, gedurende de lagere school wilde ik steeds als eerste klaar zijn met een taak en als kleuter wilde ik niets, maar speelde ik. En toch: ik speelde met de knopendoos. De knopen waren er in families en moesten telkenmale geordend worden, op grootte, kleur, vorm, materiaal, het aantal gaatjes en ook op geschiktheid om aan een draad te worden geregen en ermee te ‘snorren’. Het ordenen volgde steeds andere logica en leidde ook steeds tot nieuwe inzichten. Werd hier toch de basis voor een ingenieur gelegd? Toen was ik autonoom. Ik had controle over mijn wereldje. Nu, een halve eeuw later, is mijn wereld oneindig groot geworden en voel ik mij thuis en bekwaam in mijn rol als docent in de architectuur.., maar om terug te keren naar het pleidooi aan het begin van deze column: ooit dacht ik als afstudeerder al volleerd te zijn in mijn vak. Het bleek echter maar het begin te zijn! Verdienen Master-studenten het niet vergelijkbare inzichten op te doen voordat ze tot docent worden gebombardeerd?
