„Körper als Orakel, eine Trance, eine rhyth-mische Schnittstelle, eine Atmosphäre, eine Landschaft mit der Textur meiner momentanen Gedanken. Ein Tanz, der all das beinhaltet, das ich je getroffen, gesehen, gehört, gefühlt habe, während ich versuche, meine eigene Stimme zu finden. Dann sehe ich, ob ich es aushalten kann. Nichts geht jemals wirklich weg.“ Jamila Johnson-Small navigiert in ihrem ersten Solo-Projekt als Last Yearz Interesting Negro durch eine verdichtete Bühnenland-schaft aus Visuals, Musik, Sounds und Objek-ten, die sich eindeutig positioniert: „Geräusch vor Stille, Jetzt vor Gestern, Genuss vor Richtig-Machen!“

“Body as oracle, a trance, a rhythmic inter-face, an atmosphere, a landscape with the texture of my current mental state. A dance informed by everything and everyone I have ever encountered, seen, heard, felt, been beside that has become part of me, as I try to identify my own voice. And then see if I can stand it. Nothing ever really goes away.” In the first solo-project as Last Yearz Interest-ing Negro, Jamila Johnson- Small navigates through a condensed artistic landscape made of visuals, music, sounds and objects, going for “noise over silence, now over yesterday and pleasure over doing it right.”

Last Yearz Interesting Negro ist das unabhängige Perfor-mance-Projekt von Jamila Johnson-Small, das Tanz, Video, Skulptur, Text und elektronische Musik verbindet und Projekte mit einer Reihe von Kollaborateuren ent-wickelt. Jamila verbindet eine langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit Alexandrina Hemsley als Projekt O - New Wave, war Associate Artist bei Sadler’s Wells und hat derzeit eine Residency in den Somerset House Studios. Sieben Jahre lang arbeitete sie mit Mira Kautto als immigrants and animals und performte in Theater, Clubs und Gallerien zwischen UK und Finnland. Zum Team von Last Yearz Inte-resting Negro gehören Josh Anio Grigg (Sounddesign), Jackie Shemesh (Lichtdesign), Shelley Parker und Junior XL (Musik) und Rhoda Boateng (künstlerische Assistenz). In letzter Zeit hat sie mit Fernanda Munoz-Newsome (Let the Body, Something Orange), Rowdy SS (Fury1, 48hours) und Phoebe Collings-James (Sounds 4 Survival) gearbeitet und die Diskussionsveranstaltungen HOTLINE mit Sara Sassanelli und 2017 GUSH, ein semi- reguläres Low-Key-DIY-Event mit David Panos organisiert. Zu ihren letzten Arbeiten gehören i ride in colour and soft focus, no longer

anywhere, das vom Fierce Festival und dem Marlborough Theatre in Auftrag gegeben und von Dance Umbrella unterstützt wurde, BASIC­TENSION (seit 2017), unter-stützt von ICA und Live Art Bistro, Fury1 (2018) mit Rowdy SS; FuryZ (2018), beauftragt von Block Universe in Zusam-menarbeit mit der Gaia Art Foundation. In diesem Jahr war Jamila im Wysing Arts Centre (UK) bei Phoebe Collings-James und im Palais de Tokyo (FR) zu Gast und wird Arbeiten im Rahmen der Baltischen Triennale in Tallinn präsentieren.

Last Yearz Interesting Negro is the independent perfor-mance project of Jamila Johnson-Small working with dance, video, sculpture, text and electronic music, staging projects with a range of collaborators. Jamila has formed a long term partnership with Alexandrina Hemsley working as Project O - New Wave Associate artists, was Associate artists at Sadler‘s Wells and cur-rently residents at Somerset House Studios; for seven years Jamila worked with Mira Kautto as immigrants and animals performing in theatres, clubs and galleries between the UK and Finland; Last Yearz Interesting Negro’s regular team includes Josh
