2/3N Class OverviewWhat a wonderful year 2/3N have had. It has been a lot of hard work as we challenged ourselves to meet our learning goals, but it has been a lot of fun as well. Thank you 2/3N students and families for making 2017 such a fantastic year!

4B Class OverviewDuring this semester we have been learning lots of new and fun things in class that has involved mathematics, science, geography and English to name a few.

Maths

During maths we have learned how big a square metre is, volume and capacity of shapes and developed and made our own chance games.

English

Sizzling starts and tightening tension has been all the rage to make our creative writing more engaging and interesting for the reader, not to mention having fun changing our voices during Readers Theatre.

Science

Working with Mrs Jones from the high school we have learned how to make slime and what the properties of solids, liquids and gases are.

Geography

Making Connections with the World has been our focus with Mrs Lovatt from the high school. We have learned what connections we have as Australians with our neighbours in the South East Asian region and from this we have developed a slide show of a given country to present to our peers.

NGARA AECG - celebrating our studentsNgara AECG (Aboriginal Education Consultative Group) hosts an annual celebration of six students from each school in our region that have excelled in an area of their schooling. Families and students filled the MPC at Wyong High to be involved in the day which included performances of our Wadalba Didge Group from the High School, cultural dances, singing in Darkinjung language and motivational speakers. On Friday the 1st December, I had the pleasure of attending as our AECG Secretary to see three of our six students receive their award and book on the day. We are very proud of our students and would like to acknowledge and congratulate the following students who have worked very hard this year in their areas.

Yooralla Samuel: Academic Excellence

Zoe Finneran-Williams: Outstanding Attendance

Jamalia Taylor: Cultural Leadership

Tyreece Arama: Sporting Excellence

Ciara Milson: Student Leadership

John Larkins: Improved application to learning

A spectacular experience! For the first time since Wadalba Community School’s establishment in 2000, we auditioned for a place in the massed choir of the Schools Spectacular. Our audition was a success and we were given 20 places to be filled by students from Years 4-7.

None of the students could have had any real idea of the size of this brilliant creative machine that they were to become part of and as rehearsals continued this term and we began to see where we fitted into the big picture of performers – featured artists who were either singers, instrumentalists, dancers, aerial artists or dramatists, backing vocalists, members of the orchestra or choir, the excitement and amazement grew in our Wadalba C.S. students.

The support from parents was overwhelming and we want to say a special thank you to Mrs Greco, Mrs McClellan, Mrs Denton and Mr Lawry who gave up much of their time to help with supervision of the students while at rehearsals and performances and while travelling to and from.

Our students have had the most marvellous experience! Most are hoping for involvement next year as they realise how this opportunity has broadened their understanding and outlook and developed their confidence in so many ways. To add to this, they have had so much fun and developed skills they didn’t know they had!

They have written some of their responses here for you.

ANNALIESE: The thing I liked most about the Schools Spectacular was being able to have the chance to be involved in an amazing show. I was so glad that Mrs Crowther allowed us Year 7 girls to participate in the experience.

SHANE: What I really liked was performing all those songs using props.

CHELSEA O: I loved all the singing and all the different voices.

CHANTELLE: I loved the choir singing and the dancers dancing. It made me have a happy glow.

AURORA: It was really great fun and active.

REBECCA: I liked the thrill!

CHLOE: I loved being a part of something brilliant.

HOLLIE: Being a part of something big!

TROY: I was excited to see all the performers for the first time.

ANNEKA: There were many great opportunities and I met new friends along the way.

CHELSEA C: I loved singing and dancing to the song, “Faith,” in the finale.

ANNALIESE: …. getting to see most of the talent in Australia. It was such a great experience!

SHANE: …. the final performance because it gave me so much energy.

CHELSEA O: …. watching all the dancers perform.

CHANTELLE: …. the end because the ocean and sea part was magical and fun.

AURORA: …. all the fantastic dancers and soloists.

REBECCA: I liked the props and getting to watch all the dancers.

CHLOE: .... singing in it.

HOLLIE: …. the song, “A Musical,” because of the fantastic dance and singing.

A spectacular experience continued

ANNALIESE: It has changed me in many ways. One of them was being more interested in singing and wanting to be a professional.

SHANE: It made me a little braver to sing in front of an audience.

CHELSEA O: The soloists level of singing ability amazed me.

CHANTELLE: It has made me more confident in singing in front of people.

AURORA: It has taught me to always smile.

REBECCA: I’ve gained confidence.

CHLOE: It’s developed my music skills and helped me make new friends.

HOLLIE: Meeting my old friends made me happy.

CHELSEA: Because I’m not a good dancer, it made me want to dance on the show

TROY: It helped me realise what I want to do when I’m older.

ANNALIESE: I would definitely recommend this to others because it allows kids to go on with their passion for singing and be inspired by the amazing featured artists.

SHANE: Yes, because the Schools Spectacular is one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had in my life. If you like singing and dancing, it would be an amazing experience for you too!

CHELSEA O: I would recommend involvement to others because it’s an amazing opportunity and it’s fun and wonderful to do!

HOW HAS BEING PART OF THE SCHOOLS SPECTACULAR CHANGED YOU?

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SPECTACULAR STUDENTS FROM MRS CROWTHER

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FUTURE INVOLVEMENT TO OTHERS? WHY?

As a teacher who has taken children on many such experiences over many years, I will always be motivated by the way such an experience broadens the horizons of children, helps them to see beyond themselves and their own small worlds and teaches them to dream dreams, face their fears, work towards achieving their goals and have confidence in themselves as people who have so much to contribute to this world. On top of that the joy they experience, the skills they develop and the whole social experience makes the hard work and tiredness well worth the effort. I want to congratulate all the students who participated this year on their beautiful behaviour, respect for others and dedication to hard work. We have so much to be thankful for at Wadalba C. S.

Surf FundayOn Friday week 8 Year 5 & 6 went to the Surf funday at Toowoon Bay. Stage 3 were taught how to act in cases of emergencies in and out of the water. We were also taught how to surf and catch a wave! We all had a wonderful time playing on the sand and in the water. We also played some Newcombe ball and some volleyball. Stage 3 had a wonderful time at the surf funday and we learnt many incredible lessons on water safety.

There were 3 groups altogether yellow, green and red. All the groups got to do activities including how to rescue someone who is drowning. For the last half an hour, we did a race with all the teams and then had a free swim. It was a great experience and something we will always remember.

Road Safety Reminder

As the school holidays approach, it is important to remember when walking near roads, on footpaths, near driveways and in car parks always:

• hold your child’s hand. Until they are at least 8 years old children need to hold an adult’s hand. Until they at least 10, children should be closely supervised by an adult and hold hands when crossing the road.

• talk to your child about road safety. Talk about how to be safe when near roads. Be a good role model.

• point out road safety dangers and differences in new environments. This is especially important when on holidays in different surroundings. Roads, footpaths and pedestrian facilities may look different in holiday areas.

The best way to keep your child safe on or near the road is to hold their hand.

Talk with your child daily about road safety.

Remind other adults and carers about this too.

You can find out more at Transport for NSW.

Have a safe holiday break!

iParent - a resource for parentsARE THINKING OF BUYING YOUR CHILD A SMART TOY, SMART PHONE, TABLET, E-SITE MEMBERSHIP OR SOMETHING SIMILAR THIS CHRISTMAS?

Children and teenagers are going online and using social media with increasing frequency. While many enjoy their online experiences, there are risks involved. Parents, schools and the broader community need to work together to help keep children’s online experiences safe.

The Commonwealth Office of the Children’s eSafChristmety Commissioner has developed a resource for parents – iPARENT – which helps parents deal with the connected devices in their children’s lives.

iPARENT – found at https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent - provides facts and statistics about Australian children online, managing technology in the home and strategies that can be used by parents to keep children safe online.

A parent’s guide to online safety can be downloaded from this site. A range of other useful information is also available from the website. For example parents can access information about cyberbullying including:

• how to talk to their child about cyberbullying;:

• what to do if their child is being cyber bullied or is engaging in cyberbullying behaviour themselves; and

• sources of professional support and help.

The website also provides information about how parents and children can report unwanted online contact and/or inappropriate, offensive or illegal content online.

If you are thinking of buying smart toys, smart phones, tablets, drones, e-gift cards or membership in an e-gaming site may like to check out the e-Safety Commissioner’s eSafety Christmas Gift Guide at - https://www.esafety.gov.au/giftguide - so you can be savy and secure when you pick out tech gifts this Christmas.

Finally, if someone you know is adversely affected by an online experience, free and confidential advice, assistance and support is available from:

• the Kids Helpline (ages 5 to 25) on 1800 55 1800; and/or

• eheadspace (ages 12 to 25) on 1800 650 890; and/or

• Lifeline on 13 11 14.
