– ANNIVERSARY PAPER –

”Ten years ago, we launched ten wallpaper designs that changed our lives and, we hope, brought something fresh to yours.”

THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY

The 10th anniversary is tra-ditionally the “tin or alu-minium anniversary,” but

at ferm LIVING we’ll always con-sider it the “wallpaper anniversa-ry.” That’s because ten years ago, we launched ten wallpaper designs that changed our lives and, we hope, brought something fresh to yours.

ferm LIVING is about sincere passion for craftsmanship and aesthetics in everyday life - whilealso enjoying the benefit of func-tional design made with a graphic designer’s eye and a Danish sensi-bility.

It’s appropriate that we began with wallpaper because that’s allowed us to enter into the many rooms of design with ease. From living room to kitchen to office, we delight in creating an aesthetic universe that is deliberate yet understated.

In creating this anniversary paper, we want to share with you not only the products and history that have made ferm LIVING a thriving com-pany, but also the ideas and passi-ons behind what we do. We want to connect with what is important to you about interior design and crea-ting a home while introducing you to our SS16 collection.

The name “ferm” comes from the phrase “ferm på fingerne,” mea-ning to be good with your hands. We think that, given the right tools, everyone can find their individual style and design their every day life. We know that you do it with love - and that’s why we do, too. It’s Danish Design Made With Love.

So thank you for this first decade. Here’s to another ten years, and another. We hope you’ll join us!

– INTERVIEW –

IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE

In conversation with Rebecca Thandi Norman

These days, you wouldn’t think that there’s a lack of interior design com-panies in Denmark, but when Trine Andersen was decorating her new home back in 2006, she found her-self frustrated that she was unable to find the wallpaper she wanted.

So she did what any good graphic designer would do; she designed it herself. With an academic backg-round in graphic design and work experience as an art director for an advertising firm, Trine already had an eye for patterns and the skill set to create exactly what she wanted.

Encouraged by the quality of what she had made, she created ten de-signs and bought a booth to show-case them at Formland, the Danish interior fair in Jutland.

“It was expensive to start the pro-duction on actual wallpaper, so I could only afford to do that with one design,” Trine explains, laug-hing. “The others were just on pa-per, and I was saying to potential clients, ‘look, we can produce this design on the wallpaper, too.’ But the investment paid off and we got orders! Going to that fair was one of my biggest moments with ferm LI-VING because it showed me it could really work.” The launch brought overwhelmingly good response and Trine decided to continue.

Now it’s one decade on and ferm LIVING continues to build on this tradition. They still produce wall-paper, as well as numerous other in-terior designs. ferm LIVING release seasonal collections. These collecti-

ons are less trend-focused, though that is a factor, and more about con-sistently creating new and functio-nal high-quality design.

“It’s an incredible amount of work,” Trine says, adding, “Of course the design and the products are the foundation, but there is so much else that goes into a business. Hone-stly, if I’d known all the parts that went into running a business before I started doing it, I may have given it a second thought. But of course, I’m so glad I went ahead!”

From 2006 to today, the brand has been able to grow and develop whi-le also retaining the core that makes it unique. Discussing the ferm LI-VING aesthetic, Trine says, “we don’t think about ourselves as only a Nordic brand, but we definite-ly come from the legacy of Danish mid-century modern and well-craf-ted design.”

That influence can be seen in the streamlined, light and functional aspect of the designs, as well as the innovative shaping. There is refe-rence to the past with repetitive geometric shapes and even in the use of wallpaper, an interior design item that rides waves of popularity

in various design traditions around the world.

If there is something pointedly Scandinavian about ferm LIVING, there is something distinctly indi-vidual about it as well. “Our use of color is a strong part of our design DNA” Trine explains.

The interest in living with plants and how they fit into your interior space is also essential to ferm LI-VING, and that has been further explored with larger-scale plant boxes. The planters add height, ef-fectively making plant life an inte-gral part of the decor rather than an afterthought or addition.

Over the last ten years, ferm LI-VING has spread from the walls all around the home so that now their products can be found in al-most any part of a house - kitchen, living room, bedroom, office, ba-throom or kids’ room. The essence of wallpaper - that ability to change a room - is something that continu-es throughout all the categories and products.

Trine’s ability to create cohesive collections speaks to her growth as a designer as well as her understan-ding of how people decorate their homes today. Though the products may be vastly different - from a daybed to a cushion to a magazine holder - you can immediately look at these products and know, “that’s from ferm LIVING.”

To create such a signature look is so-mething that brands spend decades

trying to perfect but it’s not surpri-sing that ferm LIVING has mana-ged to do it since nearly its incepti-on. “We’ve grown very organically,” Trine tells me, “and that’s allowed for a lot of our success because it all felt natural to go on to the next step, then the next, and so on.”

What is next for ferm LIVING? First, they want to take a moment to look back and celebrate the last ten years. It’s a major achievement, both personally and professionally, for Trine. The celebration won’t last too long, though. There are collections to be designed and products to be made. “There’s a lot to do,” she laug-hs, as we say goodbye, “But that’s the way we like it!”

– PUNCTUAL SHELVING SYSTEM –

Punctual is a high-quality shelving system from ferm LIVING. The powder-coated metal elements come in different heights

and a beautiful range of soft hues. The basic structure is strong and robust. As a contrast to the sturdiness, all the shelves are per-forated - a detail adding a soft and airy look and a homey feel. This is an aspect of the shelving you discover when you get up close. Punctual is well-crafted and meant to be used. The system is easy to assemble, suited to grow with you and your home, and you can use it to display everything from books, boxes, shoes and toys to kitchenware, works of art or beautiful plants. Our idea is to create a modular system that easily can be assembled and expanded. The perforated shelves add a vibrant and interesting touch that is still so classic that it won’t feel dated. We are proud to introduce you to Punctual.

Walking into Siff and Cas- per’s Nørrebro, Copen-hagen, apartment, the

first thing you see is the large, sparkly purple and green palm tree that hangs from the ceiling. Initial thought: “I’m going to like these people.” Casper, a graphic desig-ner, and Siff, a costume and texti-le designer, immediately prove me right.

Though there isn’t much else by way of shimmering trees in their place, the palm does indicate the amount of plant life found around the rest of their home. “What I’d really like is to make it feel like the jungle,” Casper explains, while Siff laughs and gives me a look that says, “it’s true! He does.”

From thick cacti in the living room to tall, broad philodendron in the

bedroom, there’s not a single space throughout the apartment untou-ched by plant life.

“The visual aspect for us is about the addition of green,” Siff tells me. “We’re not really into flowers.” But having plants is about more than just how they look; Siff has a cactus she grew from a cut of her grand-mother’s, who died two years ago. When Casper’s mother died last year, they took seedlings from one of her plants and now not only does it grow abundantly in the house, it produces other seedlings that they give to their friends.

“It’s a way to have a small piece of someone, or keep them with you,” Siff says. Casper nods. “They’re special plants that we will always have.”

Casper and Siff have even taken their love of plants outside, cam-paigning their building to fund a few small plant and herb boxes in their garden. “It makes that space a lot nicer,” Casper says as we look out of the kitchen into the most-ly concrete outdoor area. “And of course any one who wants to take some herbs can have them.”

The danger of really loving plants is that they can take over your whole space. “We had them covering the window until recently, then when we were cleaning the windowsill we realized, whoa, we actually have some light and the plants were completely covering it.” Siff says. “Now we’ve re-arranged them so that the light can come through.” In a ground-level apartment like theirs, that’s a big difference.

In apartments, and any small spa-ce, there’s a need for creatively storing plants. Siff and Casper both express the desire for beautiful pots and planters that take up less space but still display the plants. “That’s why we love the new ferm LIVING plant box so much,” Siff says, “It’s really great design and it’s so fun-ctional.”

Having plants around the home can bring great joy; there are even health benefits like cleaner air. As more people live in cities, we’ll see a continued need for plant-so-lutions in interior design - ferm LIVING’s latest collection reflects that need and shows us that it can look good, too.

– HERMAN X FERM LIVING –

Helle and Jonas Herman, the husband and wife design team behind Herman Studio, have started a collaboration

with ferm LIVING. ferm LIVING has taken over the production of Herman Chair, Herman Side Table, Herman Café Table and Herman Clothes Stand.

When Herman Studio originally began the de-sign process on their Dining Table (2013) they didn’t foresee a full line, but things went so well that soon they were producing more. Separately these items are clean, minimalist and classic. To-gether, they are clearly a collection that creates a strong visual universe.

“We combine the feminine and masculine within our pieces,” Helle explains. Both she and Jonas were educated as designers; Helle comes from a graphic design and user-design backg-round,while Jonas has trained in workshops, le-arning about the construction process, sourcing, and materials.

The union of their complimentary skills and knowledge has resulted in a cohesive, elegant yet modern range of products that is now made in collaboration with ferm LIVING.

“Working with ferm LIVING is great for us because it allows us to really focus on the design process, rather than the extra stuff that we’re not as experienced with, like marketing. It lets us be the best designers we can be!” Helle says.

The latest addition, the Herman Chair, is per-haps the crowning achievement of the line. It’s no small feat to create a chair that adds so-mething new to the design world - particularly in a place like Denmark - but Herman Studio has managed to do it with a simple, stackable piece.

“We knew we wanted it to be stackable from the start,” Helle tells me, “because that really defines the construction of the base. It was also impor-tant that the chair had some kind of directional element to it; there’s visual movement.”

For a chair that looks incredibly streamlined, it’s hard for non-design people to imagine the thought and work that goes into such engine-ering. “An aspect of the chair we worked hard on was on the armrest,” Helle says. By “armrest,” she means the natural place in which your arms would fall when you sit down. “It’s very comfor-table because of the enclosed back, which affects the placement of the arms.”

It’s something I never would have thought about, but once you consider how you sit in a chair, it’s so obvious. Understanding the thought process behind the chair makes it even more impressive.

The chair, as well as the rest of the Herman ran-ge, fits perfectly into the ferm LIVING universe, with its mix of timelessness and freshness. The clean lines, natural materials and slight softness are all perfectly in line with the brand’s aesthetic.

Herman Studio is looking forward to continu-ing the product line, as well as their other work. “We’re focused on furniture design and interior design,” Helle notes, “and we’re so happy that we get to keep doing it.”

TEN YEARS AGO WE LAUNCHED TEN WALLPAPER DESIGNS THAT CHANGED OUR LIVES

Wallpaper is one of those interior products that has seen its fair share of ups and downs. Whi-le it may not always be en vogue, it does seem

to find a way into the most artistic interior designs of the last centuries. Though its often considered a “background” product, the addition of a beautiful wallpaper can be the in-terior item that ties a room together in an exceptional way. Suddenly, your wall is a mural.

Historically, the reception of wallpaper has been varied. Though its production was held in high-regard, it was as-sociated in the 18th century with the decline of the more prestigious wall-tapestries which were thought to be lon-ger-lasting and more aristocratic. It has also been bemoa-ned as overly ornamental and therefore shallow. As interior embellishment has gone in and out of style over the deca-des, so too has wallpaper.

– A WALLPAPER STORY –

Though wallpaper doesn’t come with this kind of moralistic association any longer, it is still subject to the trends of the time, which is why at ferm LIVING we’re all about adapting wall-paper to current color and design interests; so-mething you can see directly in our work over the last ten years.

We’re invested in continuing this tradition because at ferm LIVING, our story begins with wallpaper. When founder and head designer Trine Andersen wanted designs for her own home ten years ago, she couldn’t find what she was looking for, so she made it herself. But as we all know, the “making it yourself” part is never really just yourself, and the creation of wallpaper is a pursuit that combines graphic design, artistry and manual craftmanship.

What does making wallpaper for ferm LIVING actually look like? If you’re at all interested in the cross-section between machinery and art, it’s a mesmerising operation to watch. First, paint is hand-mixed to achieve individual co-lors. Then a large metal roller is engraved with the wallpaper pattern and rolled over the paper, creating repetitive designs. The hand-mixed paints are an important part

of production because each batch is entirely unique. That means that each run of wallpaper is slightly different from the next - even ones using the same pattern. For this reason, ferm LIVING recommends that if you’re using the same pattern around your house, you look for the same batch number to make sure the colors are identical.

Producing the wallpaper is an industrial pro-cess, but there’s also something charmingly old fashioned about it that creates a sense of han-diwork often missing from factory-made items. Yes, part of the work is mechanized, but that has more to do with scale - how large the swaths of paper are - than it does with each component of the work.

For ferm LIVING, the quality of the product is of the utmost importance, as is the quali-ty of the labor. Our wallpapers are all made in Sweden, where there is a longstanding tradition of wallpaper production. We know that each roll is made with care and expertise - exactly what our customers have come to expect.

ferm LIVING’s paper is WallSmart, an innova-tive non-woven fleece that is easier and faster

to hang than previous wallpapers. You can, of course, have a professional hang your wallpa-per, but with ferm LIVING’s easy step-by-step guide and a pre-mixed paste, all you need to do is line up the edges of the paper and watch your walls transform!

While the term wallpaper maybe conjure ima-ges of pretty birds and bold florals, ferm LIVING is firmly in the Nordic traditional of simple, mi-nimalist graphics with neutral or monochrome color palette. This brings the decorative feel of wallpaper into a modern aesthetic.

For the 10 year anniversary, ferm LIVING has brought out a special edition wallpaper, called “Confetti.” It brings a bit of color and sparkle to any room, filling your home with an atmosphere of celebration. Our hope is that those who have it in their homes will get a boost every time they walk into a room where it’s displayed.

TURNThe Turn series consists of a sofa and daybed in a contempo-rary design with a clear ferm LIVING touch. The furniture series complements our collection of accessories beautifully. For our SS16-collection, we have expanded the Turn sofa ran-ge with a three-seat version. This larger sofa is true to our minimalist design language; strict horizontal lines meet soft rounded shapes, while slim metal legs in powder-coated me-tal add an elegant and light feel to the appearance.

Both the sofa and the daybed have a reversible top cushion, which can easily be turned around in order to change the co-lor and look in an instant, depending on mood or personal preference. Each Turn Sofa and Daybed has two colours in the same fabric - one on either side of the main cushion. The color of the rest of the body will be identical to one of the sides of the seat cushion, allowing for a monochrome look when desired. A double stitching detail underlines the con-trasting colors on each side of the cushion.

No matter which colour combination and fabric you choose, the sofa and daybed have a timeless and clean look with their tight upholstery.
