CHANGING LANES: CE PRO 100 DEEPENS RMR SOURCES IN 2018CE Pro’s 20th annual list of the highest revenue custom installation companies reports $2.02 billion in custom revenues, plus 13% growth predicted for 2019. by Jason Knott

999, the year the CE Pro 100 list debuted, also marked the introductions of SpongeBob SquarePants, Bluetooth technology, and the European Union. Twenty years later, SpongeBob is still on TV, Bluetooth is a ubiquitous technol-ogy, and the European Union is still … OK, never mind on that one.

Continuing an upward trend since the end of the great recession, the CE Pro 100 reported booking solid revenues in 2018. Overall, the list of the highest revenue custom installation companies in the U.S. reported a healthy $2.02 billion in total residential custom installation and recurring monthly revenue (RMR) in 2018.

The group’s median revenues were $5,291,209, or $5.2 million, up 1 percent from the previous year. Many other key business metrics among members of

the list are also robust, including a predicted 12.7 percent growth rate for 2019. The revenues that make up the CE Pro 100 list were changed a few years ago.

For many years, the qualifying revenues were solely based on income derived during the installation process of various subsystems (see sidebar for complete list of subsystems). But with the inception of subsidized alarm-based smart home offerings, and the growing trend for traditional custom integrators to offer service agreements, the basis for the CE Pro 100 list shifted to include RMR as an income source. Excluded from the CE Pro 100 revenues is income derived from over-the-counter retail sales of equipment that is not installed, along with revenues from online sales of equipment that’s also not installed.

As noted, a growing trend among the companies on the list is RMR. The indus-try was built on revenue from installation services, with little to no reliance on income from recurring services like alarm monitoring or service. But that is

changing. For 2019, CE Pro 100 members report earning an average of 7.1 per-cent of their revenue from RMR.

Nowhere is the value of RMR more apparent than at the top of the list, which is led by high-volume smart home players Vivint Smart Home and large regional security player Guardian Protection Services. Both companies have deep roots in the security industry, which has seen a giant shift in its residential offerings beyond just offering intrusion and fire alarms to adding control of lighting and thermostat. Vivint reports 92 percent of its $1 billion+ revenues last year are derived from monitoring. It performed 316,000 smart home system installa-tions last year. Similarly, Guardian earned nearly 79 percent of its $214 million in custom revenues from recurring contracts. Guardian did 24,808 smart home system installations.

The strength of custom retail is also apparent on the list. Illinois-based

retailer Abt Electronics reported a strong $62 million in custom installation revenue solely from equipment sold for installation, along with the installation of 13,000 systems. Likewise, HTSA member Just One Touch / Video & Audio Center in Los Angeles has total revenues of $114 million. Its custom installation and service revenue equals $45.7 million, or 40 percent of its overall income, derived from 2,340 installations.

You might be wondering where ADT and Best Buy are on this year’s list. In January 2018, ADT went public. The company has subsequently made several key acquisitions, including Red Hawk Fire & Security (primarily a commercial security player) and more recently LifeShield (a DIY provider). Due to the acqui-sitions, the company is still working to properly categorize its smart home rev-enues versus its pure alarm installation revenues, which is necessary for the CE Pro 100 entry. Being a public company also puts added pressure on the need to be 100 percent accurate in any of its public declarations. Thus, the Boca Raton, Fla.-based company opted to not enter this year.

Best Buy’s entry is similarly complex. First, the $44 billion company does not break out its pure custom installation revenues in any of its public filings,

These firms focus on large-scale jobs, with at-tached service agreements in many cases.

How Companies Verify Their Data COMPANIES ARE ASKED to submit their financial data or have it verified by their accountant for the CE Pro 100. The verification is optional. Compa-nies were required to sign a statement (for faxed or mailed entries) that says, “the information provided is accurate and truthful.”

Similar to previous years, CE Pro has selected gross revenue in multisystem residential installations as the determining factor for the ranking. Keep your eyes peeled for the June issue of CE Pro that will include a brand analysis of vendors used by the CE Pro 100. All entrants in the CE Pro 100 are eligible to attend the CE Summit/Total Tech Summit as a hosted guest. This year it will be held Nov. 4-6 in Fort Worth, Texas.

The CE Pro list is aggregated in several ways:▷ A qualification form appeared in the January, February and March 2019 issues of CE Pro.▷ An online form was posted on cepro.com for three months, inviting entries. ▷ A blast email was sent to the installing companies that subscribe to CE Pro. ▷ Special emails and phone calls were made to a handful of firms that appeared in previous CE Pro 100 listings. The list is ranked by the volume of billed, not booked, business from custom installation systems that incorporate at least three of the follow-

ing subsystems:▷ Audio (sources, speakers, processors or multiroom distribution

components)▷ HVAC control/energy management systems▷ Lighting controls▷ Security systems (alarms, integrated fire, access control or video

surveillance)▷ Structured wiring▷ Telecommunications▷ Video (sources, monitors, projectors, screens, multiroom distribu-

tion components, gaming)

▷ Whole-house automation/integration▷ Networking (PC/broadband routers, modems, WAPs, etc.)▷ Window covering controls▷ Energy storage systems▷ Water leak detection▷ Indoor air quality ▷ Other (cellphone signal boosters, voice control, central vacuum,

surge protection, irrigation control, voice control, satellite, spa con-trols, acoustical panels, seating, furniture, etc.)

The data also includes recurring revenue from multi-subsystem installations. Given that RMR for subsidized smart home installation is a new business model being adopted by many companies, CE Pro began including RMR revenue in the custom revenue totals a few years ago. As always there are many large companies that chose not to participate in this year’s listing. Many higher-end custom companies do not want to be compared with high-volume companies on any list. Is your company missing from the list? If so, email CE Pro at [email protected], or please email any other comments about the CE Pro 100.

let alone split out revenue from its successful Magnolia Home Theater store-within-a-store locations. Second, its Geek Squad In-Home Advisors program grew from 300 staff members to 530, conducting 175,000 free in-home service calls last year. There is no way to track the number of upgrade sales made dur-ing those visits.

Third, its Total Tech Support program that launched in May 2018 already has more than 1 million subscribers paying $199 per year. That alone equates to a $199 million line item of additional custom installation revenues for 2018. (Read more about what integrators can learn from Best Buy’s service initiative on page 36.) Fourth, Best Buy had partnered in 2018 with Vivint on in-store kiosks to sell smart home technology. That venture was discontinued but the company does not indicate how much revenue was generated last year from the foray. Given all these complexities, again complicated by the fact that Best Buy is a public company and any public declarations must be totally accurate, the com-pany is not on the list.

Integrators Express Optimism for 2019Historically, members of the CE Pro 100 are optimistic. For example, even dur-ing the great recession last decade, integrators were predicting year-over-year revenue growth — despite the fact that in 2009, for instance, the average cus-tom integrator’s revenues fell a devastating 56 percent!

So it is not surprising that the CE Pro 100 is anticipating 12.7 percent rev-enue growth. Anecdotally, several members have strong reasons for optimism (look for individual commentary on top challenges and opportunities in 2019 in next month’s CE Pro). One integrator reports he had already matched his entire 2018 revenue number by the end of March. Another just received a long-term, multi-year installation contract for a single project that will sky-rocket his company’s growth.

But overall, many of the same economic factors that have been in place for the past several years still exist but with measured enthusiasm heading into 2019. For example:

Consumer confidence in the economy is falling heading into 2019. To date, the index shows a 7.3 percent drop through the first quarter of the year. CEO confidence is down 13 percent to date in 2019.

New home construction is plateaued. The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development report that housing starts are down 9.9 percent through February 2019 versus 2018. The number of starts is still at historically high levels of nearly 1.3 million total starts (970,000 of which are single-family, the remainder MDU).

The stock market continues to be volatile. The Dow Jones is hovering around

Retail GiantsTOP CUSTOM RETAILERS/ETAILERS (CUSTOM REVENUE ONLY)1. Abt Electronics $61 million2. Just One Touch / Video & Audio

Center $45.7 million3. Nebraska Furniture Mart $20 million4. World Wide Stereo $11.7 million5. Bjorn’s Audio Video $4.5 million

These integrators earn more revenue from selling equipment over-the-counter than via custom installation. Many of those over-the-counter sales form relationships with customers that lead to installing the equipment.

26,000 (at press time), which is more than 2,000 points higher than one year ago, but it has been subjected to large up and down swings for the past 12 months. A higher stock market means more cash to spend, especially among the wealthy.

Home remodeling spending is expected to rise solidly in the first three quar-ters of 2019 at around a 7 percent clip, but according to Harvard’s Joint Cen-ter for Housing Studies the remodeling market growth rate is expected to be just 5.1 percent in Q4 2019. That is still growth — homeowners are expected to spend $354.2 billion in on home upgrades.

The market plateau is not lost on several CE Pro 100 companies. Last year, just three companies expected their revenues for 2018 to be “flat.” Heading into 2019, 10 companies are anticipating no revenue growth. Likewise, last year just one company expected a drop in revenue in 2018. For 2019, three companies expect lower income at an average 15 percent drop.

As noted, the median CE Pro 100 company reported $5.2 million in revenues last year. Median is the figure at which half the respondents are above and half are below. If revenue from all sources is considered, the CE Pro 100 represents companies that earned approximately $2,144,099,976, or $2.1 billion last year.

The number of installations per company continues to grow. The median num-ber of residential projects among the CE Pro 100 was 166, a 19 percent drop from 2017. That continues a trend of integrators being more selective, opting to go after fewer but higher-priced jobs.

The average revenue per customer in 2018 was $31,874. (Note: This revenue-per-customer figure does not indicate the revenue derived from installation only, but the total revenue derived from both installation plus RMR.) The aver-age revenue per installation grew 9 percent compared to the previous year. The median number of employees in 2018 is 24, up from 22 the previous year.

One other benchmark of note: There are 53 companies on the list that exceed $5 million, up from 48 last year.

Productivity KingsTOP HIGHEST REVENUE- PER-FULL-TIME-EMPLOYEE 1. One Touch Living $612,0002. Abt Electronics $488,0003. Just One Touch / Video & Audio

These efficient integrators have been able to maximize employee productivity. Rev-enue figure is per-employee average work-ing in custom integration area only, not total company. The data can be somewhat skewed by companies that make liberal use of an independent contractor workforce.
