Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time-September 16, 2018

Often when we read the Prophets or the Psalms, we place ourselves in the first person narrative. It is easy to pray a psalm that speaks to something we ourselves are suffering or experiencing. But today's prophecy from Isaiah cannot mean anything but a prophecy of Jesus and his suffering.

The Psalm as well could apply to our suffering, but applies better as a prophecy of Jesus' suffering and death.

In the letter of James, we are chided to accompany our faith with works. "So also faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead." We are urged to reach out from our faith, the gift of God, to go further into good works to those who suffer. If we reach out to those who need our help, we are truly fulfilling our faith in Christ.

HE SPOKE THIS OPENLY

Just as Isaiah prophesies the suffering of Jesus in rather specific terms--"I gave my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who plucked my beard; my face I did not shield from buffets and spitting"--Jesus, in speaking to his disciples, clearly reveals to them that he will suffer and die, which bewilders and shocks them. "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days. He spoke this openly." They don't know what to do with this information, and they can't envision their beloved Lord suffering and dying in this way.

"YOU ARE THE CHRIST"

Jesus asks the disciples who the people say he is. Some say, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets." This odd answer shows that the disciples were beginning to form a rudimentary understanding that it was possible to rise from the dead. So it is puzzling that when Jesus says that he will "rise after three days," they would seemingly not quite comprehend this.

But when Jesus asks, "Who do you say that I am?" Peter speaks for the disciples: "You are the Christ." Moments later, the rather confused Peter objects to the Jesus' assertion that he will suffer and die. Jesus stunningly rebukes him for his objection, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."

Although Peter is beginning to form true faith in his declaration of belief in Christ, he still is thinking like a human, and has not yet begun to see the world through God's eyes. Peter's faith has not yet grown to its full stature, as it will after the Resurrection.

Our gift of faith sees and believes the suffering and death of Christ, but we still might not see the consequences of that faith. Our works arise out of our belief in and love for the Lord. Through our faith, we must not only believe, but help others as Christ would do. This is seeing the world through God's eyes. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Apreciada comunidad, El Ministerio Catequético está integrado por catequistas que poseen gran espíritu evange-lizador. Les caracteriza la docilidad al Espiritu del Señor que emana de una gran fe y de la práctica de los sacramentos, alimentados por la sagrada Eucaristia, y por una labor Cristiana motivada por ser Iglesia Católica que extiende el Reino de Dios. Otra “Jornada de Fe” que iniciamos con gran entusiasmo en la formación de nuestros niños y niñas, para la preparación de los sacramentos de reconciliación y primera communion. Durante esta semana, usted puede regresar las aplicaciones en la oficina parroquial, de Lunes a Jueves. Tendremos una REUNION DE ORIENTACION, el Domingo 23 de Septiembre en el salón # 1 del primer edificio de la escuela Santa Felicitas y será de las 10:30 A.M. hasta las 12:00 del medio día. Los niños y niñas que inician su Primer Año de preparación, deberán presentar una copia del cer tificado de bautismo y la cuota de colaboración.

"TÚ ERES EL MESÍAS"

Jesús le pregunta a sus discípulos qué es lo que dice la gente de quién es él. Algunos dicen: "Juan el Bautista, otros que Elías; y otros, que alguno de los profetas". Esta extraña respuesta muestra que los discípulos estaban em-pezando a formar un entendimiento rudimentario de que era posible volver de la muerte. Así que es desconcertante que cuando Jesús dice que él "resucitara al tercer día", aparentemente no lo entenderían.

Pero cuando Jesús pregunta "Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?" Pedro habla por los discípulos " Tú eres el Mesías". Momentos después, el confundido Pedro se opone a lo que Jesús dijo de que él sufriría y moriría. Jesús sorprendido, lo reprende por su objeción: "¡Apártate de mí, Satanás! Porque tú no juzgas según Dios, sino según los hombres".

Aunque Pedro está empezando a formar una verdadera fe en su declaración en Cristo, él todavía está pensando como un ser humano, y no ha empezado todavía a ver el mundo a través de los ojos de Dios. La fe de Pedro todavía no ha alcanzado su altura completa, lo cual pasará hasta después de la Resurrección.

Ngày 21 tháng 9 - Thánh Matthêu Tông Ðồ Thánh Sử

Thánh Matthêu còn gọi là Lêvi, con ông Alphê. Một hôm đi qua sở quan thuế thành Capharnaum gần bờ hồ Tibêriat, Chúa Giêsu thấy Matthêu ngồi ở bàn thu thuế, Ngài liền bảo ông: "Hãy theo Ta". Không do dự, ông liền đứng lên, bỏ mọi sự mà theo Chúa. Và sau đó, ông thiết tiệc tại nhà để khoản đãi Chúa Giêsu, các môn đệ và các bạn hữu, trong số đó có cả những người biệt phái. Họ thắc mắc khi thấy Chúa hiện diện giữa những người mà họ cho là tội lỗi. Chúa Giêsu đã giải thích cho họ: "Ta không đến để gọi những người công chính nhưng để gọi người tội lỗi...". Thánh Matthêu đã viêt Phúc Âm bằng tiếng Do Thái vào khoảng năm 50. Vì viết cho người Do Thái nên ngài nhấn mạnh đến kiểu nói và quan niệm riêng họ. Ngài nhắc cho họ biết rằng: "Phúc Âm hoàn tất luật cũ". Ngài chứng minh Chúa Giêsu chính là Ðấng Cứu Thế mà Cựu Ước hằng mong đợi. Có thể nói Phúc Âm của ngài được coi là đầy đủ nhất. Theo nhiều văn kiện lịch sử để lại thì thánh Matthêu đã đi truyền giáo ở Êthiopi, Ba Tư, Parthes và sau cùng ngài đã được lãnh phúc tử đạo tại Tari-um thuộc Êthiopi. Thánh Matthêu thường coi như vị thánh quan thầy của những nhà trí thức Công Giáo.

Lạy Chúa, xưa Chúa đã chọn các Tông Đồ và sai các ông đi rao giảng Tin Mừng Cứu Độ cho muôn dân, Xin Chúa hãy đón nhận chúng con là những giảng viên giáo lý, để chúng con đem Lời Chúa cho mọi

người. Xin cho chúng con biết can đảm để dấn thân, khiêm tốn để học hỏi, và quên mình để phục vụ.

Xin cho chúng con biết dùng lời nói và hành động, để làm chứng cho đức tin chúng con đang rao giảng.

Ước gì mỗi ngày chúng con nhận biết và yêu mến hơn, và qua chúng con, Chúa được nhận biết. Amen.

"Còn anh em, anh em bảo Thầy là ai?" Ðức Giêsu đặt câu hỏi trên cho các môn đệ sau khi họ đã ở với Ngài và được Ngài sai đi (Mc 3,14), sau khi họ đã thấy việc Ngài làm, nghe lời Ngài giảng. Hôm nay Ðức Giêsu cũng đặt câu hỏi này cho tôi sau khi tôi đã theo đạo một thời gian dài, đã cầu nguyện và tham dự các bí tích... "Còn anh, anh bảo Thầy là ai?" Câu hỏi này nhắm thẳng vào tôi, đòi tôi phải trả lời. Tôi không được trả lời qua loa hay máy móc. Câu trả lời của tôi phải bắt nguồn từ một kinh nghiệm, kinh nghiệm gặp gỡ và quen biết Ðức Giêsu. Chẳng nên theo một người mà mình không quen và tin tưởng.

Ðời tín hữu là một hành trình tìm kiếm không ngừng để khám phá ra khuôn mặt luôn mới mẻ của Ðức Giêsu. Ngài thật là một mầu nhiệm khôn dò và quá phong phú. Chúng ta chỉ mon men đến gần, nhưng không sao múc cạn được mầu nhiệm ấy. Phải thanh lọc những hình ảnh ta vốn có về Ngài. Người làng Na-da-rét cứ nghĩ Ðức Giêsu chỉ là bác thợ. Gi-oan Tẩy Giả nghĩ Ngài là một Mê-si-a vinh quang toàn thắng. Phải gột bỏ cái biết cũ về Ngài để đón nhận một Ðức Kitô khác, vượt xa điều mình nghĩ. "Tư tưởng của anh không phải là tư tưởng của Thiên Chúa". Cần trở nên trẻ thơ để nhận ra khuôn mặt thật của Giêsu.

"Người ta bảo Thầy là ai?" Ta cần biết cái nhìn của con người hôm nay về Ðức Giêsu. Nhiều cái nhìn đúng nhưng chưa đủ. Truyền giáo là giúp người ta biết đúng và đủ về Ngài. Không phải là cái biết lý thuyết trong sách vở, nhưng là cái biết thân tình của người môn đệ. Cuộc sống của ta vén mở căn tính của Ðức Giêsu. Dung mạo của ta phải mang nét đặc trưng của Ngài. Ðức Giêsu đã nói: "Ai thấy Thầy là thấy Cha" (Ga 14,9). Chúng ta ao ước nói: "Ai thấy tôi là thấy Ðức Giêsu".

We have had a wonderful beginning of the year so far. This year our theme for the school year is “Spreading Hope in God’s Community” created by the class of 2019. The theme this year is particularly fitting as the daily news of everything happening in our world can sometimes feel overwhelmingly negative. In these times, we need to have hope and bring hope to others. 2019 is an extra special year as it will mark our 60th anniversary since the opening in 1959. Please save the dates of our big events so that you can attend and celebrate with us or help with preparations. If you would like to join our 60th anniversary committee we are meeting on the second Thursday of each month.

St. Felicitas Comedy Night - The Class of 75 will be hosting a comedy night in the gym on October 27th featuring the well-known comedian Mark Lundholm, who is also an alumni and son to long time parishioner Sheila Bickerton. This is a 21 and over event. There will be cocktails and dinner before the show. Tickets are on sale now. Contact the school office for more information.

Catholic School’s Week Kick Off - January marks the official beginning of our 60th

anniversary year of 2019 and so we will kick things off at our Catholic School’s Open

House following the 9:00 am mass on January 27th. Along with our open house and science fair, we will have a food truck and an alumni, parent, and student volleyball tournament in the gym.

Alumni Gala - On March 2nd (Close to our beloved St. Felicitas’ feast day and before Lent starts) we will have a Mardi Gras Masquerade Gala for our Alumni, Parents, and Staff. Save the date and start shopping for your Gala attire!

Fall Festival - We are bringing back the Festival! We will have a three-day Festival on the first weekend of October of 2019!
