ABOUT USAt World Journeys our mission is simple: we design journeys that we, as travellers, would undertake ourselves. In our youth, we travelled the world on a budget, arriving into cities late at night with nothing pre-arranged, battling through bureaucracy and language barriers to prove we could do it on our own. In later years we found, like many, that we had less time to travel, let alone the luxury of having time to plan our travel. That’s what inspires World Journeys today. We plan journeys so you don’t have to. Itineraries are crafted on our personal knowledge and experience. We are travel aficionados: we have worked in the industry for over 30 years, and we still travel regularly to be able to bring new and exciting opportunities to the market. We won’t stop travelling: not only is it our passion, it is our job to provide the very best level of service and knowledge. In fact, we generally won’t sell a destination unless someone from our team has been there.

ANGELA PIRIEWith a background in group travel logistics and product research, Ange is dedicated to ensuring that your journey is personalised and consistently exceeds expectations. Travelling to inspiring destinations, testing amazing accommodation, and having life-changing experiences rate highly. A few of Ange’s highlights are hot air ballooning over the Serengeti, swimming with dolphins in Zanzibar, and e-biking around Bagan. A recent trip to Myanmar was a complete surprise and she is now anticipating her next trip to meet mountain gorillas in Uganda!

BRETT BARCLAYWith nearly 30 years in travel, Brett has visited over 100 countries but the bucket list keeps growing! Highlights include seeing the mountain gorillas in Rwanda, being in the Rio Carnival, discovering the tragic slave trade history of West Africa, and being immersed in Japanese culture in ryokans (traditional inns). Brett is an avid cruiser, a rail buff, and a huge fan of family travel (as his son can testify!). Latest adventures include Ethiopia, “One of the most fascinating countries I have ever been to”, and an expedition cruise to Antarctica.

CHRIS LYONSThe ‘veteran’ of the organisation, Chris started his travelling career in the mid 1970’s, spending over a year travelling Central and South America, a part of the world for which he has a real passion, and a region he returns to regularly. Fascinated with history and archaeology, Chris has delighted in exploring historical treasures including Angkor Wat, Machu Picchu, and the Persepolis ruins. Many years of hosting tours means Chris has a real understanding of the needs of every traveller.

KATE GOHARWith a 12 month OE that somehow stretched out to 12 years, Kate has a particular passion for the history, people, and culture of North Africa and the Middle East, even choosing to live in the region long enough to learn Arabic. However, she is equally content getting lost in the lanes and alleys of Venice Island or Saint-Germain-des-Pres, chatting to child monks in Bhutan, or staring transfixed at the moai on Easter Island. If travel is a bug, Kate is delighted to have caught it.

Here we showcase journeys to some of the most exciting, fascinating, and exotic places on earth. They are our personal suggestions of what to do, what to see, and where to stay. We know travellers value flexibility so we generally have no set departure dates, and itineraries are not regimented: journeys can be tailor-made to suit your needs. We offer professional planning and expert knowledge, working with you to create your dream trip. Our backup services take the stress out of travel; if your flight is delayed or transport doesn’t show, we’ll sort out the arrangements.

STAR RATINGS

We consider a variety of criteria in our selection of accommodation, including location, style, ambience, comfort, service, and facilities. Star ratings differ widely around the world, so we have allocated categories based on typical standards, our own personal recommendations, and value for money.3 Star – simple accommodation with adequate facilities, sometimes the best available in the area.4 Star – comfortable accommodation with good service and facilities.5 Star – deluxe accommodation with top service and excellent facilities.6 Star – exceptional properties rating amongst the best in the world with stunning outlook, outstanding service, unique features, and superb facilities.

GROUP JOURNEYS

In addition to our tailor-made journeys we offer some group tours which make travel to certain destinations more achievable and allow you to meet people from all over the world!

HOSTED JOURNEYS

Our hosted journeys allow you to enjoy unique and inspiring small group travel to some of the most fascinating places on earth. LOWER GANGES RIVER CRUISE | 8 DAYSThere is no river in the world as sacred as the Ganges and an expedition on the Hooghly is one of the prettiest journeys imaginable. Wind your way through the lush countryside of West Bengal with its culturally significant towns boasting stunning temples and palaces. There can be no better vessel to explore this rich tapestry than the stately Orient Pandaw. Built in Vietnam in 2012, this ship is the pride of the fleet! There are thirty staterooms on two decks with personal verandahs, an indoor dining area, deck bar, movie/lecture theatre, and spa.

DAY 1 KOLKATA > BARRACKPOREDepart at noon. Sail past the Old Danish colony of Serampore to Barrackpore. Land for a walk past the Semaphore Tower, Government House, the Temple of Fame and Flagstaff House.

DAY 2 CHANDERNAGORE > HOOGHLYSail up to Chandernagore, a French possession until 1950. Visit the 18th century church and the Dupleix House. Sail past the Old Dutch settlement of Chinsura before a visit to the Imambara at Hooghly. With verses from the Quran written on its walls, the Imambara steps you back in time to relive a slice of Islamic history. Sail into the night to a mooring near Kalna.

DAY 3 KALNA > MAYAPURSail upstream, landing at the country town of Kalna after breakfast. Take cycle rickshaws to see some of Bengal’s most attractive terracotta temples, as well as the unique Shiva temple made up of 108 lesser shrines. Continue to Mayapur to visit the vast new Hare Krishna headquarters which dominates the skyline. The temple receives over a million singing and dancing devotees a year from around the world. Sail on through the night to a mooring near Matiari.

DAY 4 MATIARI > PLASSEYThis morning visit the brass-working village of Matiari, a charming riverside village. Interact with the locals and witness the process of beating out brass water pots and other vessels. Later, cruise on to the battlefield of Plassey. Here, in 1757, Robert Clive (the Commander-in-Chief of British India) defeated Siraj-ud-Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal, and changed the course of Indian history. Moor close to Murshidabad for the night.

DAY 5 MURSHIDABADThis morning, walk to the Khushbagh, a peaceful Mughal-style garden that encloses the tombs of Siraj-ud-Daulah and his family. Continue upstream to the great Hazarduari Palace. Built by an English architect in 1837, the palace hosts an extensive collection of pictures, china, weapons, and

other objects. Carry on to visit the great Katra Mosque and Nashipara Palace before driving out to see Katgola Palace. Built in classical Georgian style by rich local merchants, Katgola Palace represents the other side of the coin for the ‘White Mughal’ period, a time when English and Indian cultures came close to fusion. Moor overnight on the riverbank.

DAY 6 BARANAGARThis morning, walk through the fields of the delightfully sleepy village of Baranagar to visit its three gorgeous miniature terracotta temples. This is rural India at its most idyllic. Continue up the lower Ganges, which twists and turns between banks lined with mustard fields and mango orchards. Moor close to the Farakka Barrage.

DAY 7 GAURDuring breakfast, we cruise to a mooring by the Farakka lock. Disembark for a full-day excursion by road to Gaur. This quiet, deserted place was once one of India’s great cities. GIVING BACKAs you’ve seen in this brochure, we visit some of the most pristine locations in the world; some are home to a local population less fortunate than ours, to endangered wildlife, or to fragile environments and ecosystems.

All too often, their plight goes unseen, whether it’s the devastation in marine environments caused by ghost nets in the Indian Ocean, leopards and cheetahs being poisoned in Namibia, rhinos massacred for their horns, or Cape Town’s hungry street children. World Journeys is proud to support a number of charitable organisations and we donate

Sea turtle rescue centre that removes “ghost gear” – abandoned fishing gear such as nets – from the marine environment in the Indian Ocean and provides rehabilitation for affected sea turtles.

This rehabilitation centre for poisoned or injured (by traps) leopards and cheetahs also educates local game farmers on how to avoid these cats eating their stock.

Travellers help struggling schools in the areas they visit by packing supplies such as pencils, soccer balls, stethoscopes, and blood pressure kits. See packforapurpose.org for more information.

Bridging the Gap builds and sustains village schools along the river in Northern Laos. These donations buy desks, textbooks, school supplies, buildings, toilets, floors, and roofs.

This programme relocates white and black rhinos from the high density parks in South Africa, to parks in Botswana. These parks are more difficult for poachers to access.

Together with partnered restaurants and other sponsors, StreetSmart South Africa raises money to fund street children’s education, skills training, and family reunification programmes.

to support their quest to minimise humankind’s impact on the environment and bring relief to those in need. Join us in aiding these noble organisations to keep our world beautiful and prosperous so that future generations can enjoy inspiring journeys of their own.
